For those that have installed an aftermarket head unit and retained the factory backup camera, have you had any luck viewing the rear camera when not in reverse? My Pioneer AVH-w4400NEX has the option to view my front and rear cameras at any time, but only my front camera is visible in Camera View. The rear camera works fine and activates as expected when I shift into reverse. I've read somewhere that the rear camera may be powered by the reverse lights, but I haven't found any diagrams to confirm that. I'm mostly just wanting to make sure I didn't miss a connection when hooking up the wiring harnesses during installation, but I've gone over the diagram for that a few times and don't see anything obvious.

I also know that I can "safely" activate the rear camera while driving over 25 MPH and shifting into reverse... but no thanks...

Anyone have ideas on this? I'm about to go pull the head unit out and recheck the wiring, but if it's just a matter of the camera receiving power from the reverse lights, I won't waste my time.

What harness did you use to hook up the pioneer with?

I used the Crux harness recommended by Crutchfield: https://www.crutchfield.com/p_249TY...io-Interface-W-SWC-BUCam-Retention-11-up.html

Thanks for linking that. I had run across that one a while ago and it definitely helped refresh some things. I was under the impression that the head unit would handle the diode/power portion and make that mod unnecessary, but now I guess I just have to pull the head unit and check my wiring... Thanks!

Maybe something along the line of the frac harness? I know I've seen it posted somewhere where someone did what you want.

FRAC is a little different than what I'm looking for, since the new head unit already does all the heavy lifting that the FRAC mod would accomplish, at least for my case. The only thing that I can think of is that Tundra backup cameras are indeed powered on the same circuit as the reverse lights, so I'll need to add the diode and ignition power mod mentioned in the TundraTalk link.

Now I'm just trying to decide if I care enough about having this ability to pull the head unit out and rewire/troubleshoot the whole thing...
