Gas quality

Went to the Toyota dealership yesterday to get my oil changed they made a comment in reference to where I buy gas, I told them I buy it a Walmart. They said I should only use gas from one the bigger gas stations. That cheaper gas will cause my fuel pump to go out. I normally use 87 octane and then every few months I use 93 octane. I don’t want problems with my truck but now it concerns me, Has anyone heard this.

 

I don't see Murphy on the list unless it is under a different name

 

I think that's the point..
There are plenty of "discount" suppliers on the list selling Top-Tier gas, Wal-Mart is not one of them. Drive the extra distance or spend a couple cents more per gallon. It will easily be worth it in the long run.

 

Isn't the gas at Kroger really Shell gas?

Is there a way to find out where a food market gets their gas from? We have Giant Food stores in our area and they offer a discount on gas. I went to their site but couldn't find anything about it. That makes me leery.

 

That's why I only fill up at Costco usually cheaper too

 

I don't know if this is nationwide but here in the DFW area fuel points from Tom Thumb work at any Chevron location.

I have seen studies that showed Chevron and Shell to have the best additives for the best gas overall. The quality margins between them and other Top-Tier gas brands (Most of the Top-Tier brands get their gas from the same original supplier anyway) were actually so close that it would not make a difference.

 

No. Kroger is unbranded. The only similarity is that Shell accepts Kroger gasoline points up to 10 cents per gallon (for now). For what it's worth from a person in the business, stick to either major brands or Costco. I hear horror stories from unbranded buyers all of the time.

 

My Brother in law was a former Sr. Exec at a Mjr refinery..Told me Costco was best bang/quality for buck. All others was just marketing.

Like what? I mean, I have used Kroger gas for the last 20 years in a variety of vehicles for many miles and I have never had a problem. I think this is all a bit of bunk, honestly.

 

Also, I emailed Kroger about this. they said they are top-tier but don't waste the money going through the application process. Pretty much the same as Amsoil and API certifications...they meet it, but don't waste the money on going through the approval process; except for some of their lower end oils.

Just because you aren't on the list doesn't mean the gas isn't top-tier.

 

Well, I'm glad you've not had issues. I'm just stating the fact that Kroger is not a gasoline brand, and they buy on the spot market. Nobody can dispute the fact that Kroger is not a gasoline brand, because it isn't. Just trying to give a little insight.

 

I just wish we had 93 Octane out here. AZ only has 91.

Not our Costco's. 91 seems to be the norm around here. I guess it's time to move.

 

I'm from California and moved here to south Carolina few years ago. Life is better.

 

The Kroger in my town gets gas from the marathon storage place we have in town. I have also seen trucks leave there and go to the Exxon station to fill their tanks. I use Kroger 90% of the time.

 

My understanding is there are a limited amount of refineries in the USA and all the gas we buy comes out of the same refineries. Once the gas leaves a refinery, where does it go? Does it go to a holding station where the supplier (take Shell for instance) ads their additives to the gas, and then from their, ships the gas to their stations?

Or do the refineries do all the production, at the refinery, and then ship the gas directly to the stations?

 

I've had the occasion to be able to fill up a Costco a couple of times and I can tell a difference.

 

All right I am in the petroleum industry and will try to shed some light. I will use our area in East TN as an example. All of our fuel, rather gasoline or distillates originated in the gulf in Texas basically. Takes about 16 days to make it up the pipeline to here. Up through the gulf through Louisiana, Missisissippii, Alabama, and then to Georgia. There is a huge spur in Atlanta where the pipeline splits off. From here it goes up to Chattanooga. From here it splits again and goes to Knoxville, TN and Nashville, TN to the terminals. The line also continues from Atlanta up through the Carolinas to New York Harbour. That takes care of the logistics.

84cbob and 93unl are shipped on the pipeline. 84cbob is a base stock and is the base for all gasoline. Once in the terminal companies have allocations that are purchased from several people. Our company is a branded dealer and we represent 5 brands. We also have a ton of unbranded stations. We have our own product we ship up the pipeline, or we can purchase from another supplier at the rack or at the terminal.

Now, everything is blended at the rack when a truck loads. 84cbob is blended with ethanol to make 87e10, etc.... to make all the different grades of gasoline.

With that being said, it is exactly the same product and base gasoline across the board. The brands will add their proprietary additive at the rack to make it branded Exxon, Marathon, Shell, etc.....

This is where I do not know so take this with a grain of salt, but the additive is so little I am not sure how much of a difference it makes these days. The EPA is highly regulated the 87e10 grade, that all fuels that leaves the rack is High detergent and high quality.

Now, it is highly urged against and frowned upon to take branded property to an unbranded location. Brand A only wants their product sold at their stores and their stores only. If they catch you pulling branded product and putting it in an unbranded location they can pull the brand from you.

I say that to get to the point that there is really no difference in fuel across the board.

Hands down what is most important is the tanks and the condition at the gas station. Many dealers clean them once a year since ethanol attracts water, others do absolutely nothing. I would rather buy unbranded gasoline from a store that sells a good bit of gas and moves it than a smaller branded station that does not turn the volume.

I can tell you without a doubt that your stores like Kroger, Costco, are buying their own fuel and having companies haul it for them. They run very clean and top notch fuel facilities and really stay on top of their monthly regulation and required tank certifications with the weight and measures of their prospective states.

There is no such if an A, B, C grade of 87e10. It is all the same stuff, only the additive makes it a branded product.....

If anyone has had water or a problem with gas it has been due to a cross drop as in we dropped UKSD in the gas tank on accident or vice versus, or there is water in the tank at the station due to several reasons....

Hope this helps, but at the end of the day I would be more concerned about the station I buy from rather it is branded, unbranded, etc....

 

I got a cousin who drives from the "rack" to the stores. He's told me to stay away from the Mom and Pop places for the same reason you mention. The tanks are not maintained well and water builds up over time.

 

Yeah for the most part or 99% of the time the stores care and will have no problems. Only takes a broken cap or something and then some rain. Next thing you know you have 6" of water in the bottom of a tank. Now you have to pump it all out, clean the tank, then replace product. Not cheap for the store owner.
