Dealer cost to install lift

Got a quote today from a local Toyota dealer to install my lift. I have all of the components: Toytec Boss front coilovers, rear Toytec Boss shocks, Coachbuilder +2 shackles, differential drop kit.

They quoted 7 hours of labor for $780 and threw in a free alignment.

Is this a fair price?

7 hours seems pretty high with a full shop. Id shop around town

 

Is there any advantage to having the dealer install it?

 

No. It’s a very simple straightforward install. The shackles can be a little bit of a pain, but a dealer has all the tools to deal with it. Any mechanic can do it

 

I installed all the same stuff, minus the diff drop, on jack stands in my driveway using hand tools in 3.5 hours. Drove to get my alignment for $80

 

For a dealer, hell yes that’s a decent price!

 

So I should just do it myself? I just bought a floor jack and jack stands. Probably need a pry bar? Impact wrench? Second set of hands?

 

Totally doable if you’re remotely mechanically savy. I did mine myself and no impact. Just a cheater bar, pry and a 250 lb torque wrench for reassemble

 

I would jump all over that! Don’t know of any local off-road shops that I trust in my area.

 

If you’ve done mechanical work before, then by all means do it. Otherwise, the dealer quote seems too high in my opinion, but probably normal as far as dealer labor costs go. By comparison, a local shop quoted me $200 for just the front. I ended up doing it myself in my apartment parking lot using hand tools and cheater bars for the big tough bolts. There are a few youtube videos that can help you if you decide to tackle it yourself. Good luck and post before and after pics!

 

If the dealer does it it’s covered under factory warranty. Just saying

 

That’s been my plan. The dealer is trying to talk me into letting them do it for me. I made the mistake of asking about clearing the UCA with new wheels when they did the 5000 mile service. They said they would match a lower price but I hate doing that.

 

Off road shops charge that much and more...especially if you don't buy your setup from them. I would jump on that for that price.

 

That’s the part that has me thinking about letting them do it.

 

Maybe $300 high but you get 3/36 on it. Piece of mind.

That’s what my dealer said. Just like my tonneau cover. Said if it breaks, it’s warrantied under that 8/125

I do believe you need to stay within Toyota spec though. Which is 3” lift max.

They’ll warranty the work. That’s about it. There’s nothing that can go wrong if installed properly.

 

Sounds right. I wouldn’t expect them to warranty the parts since I purchased them separately.

It’s just the cracked CV boot or other issues that they might say were caused by me installing an aftermarket lift.

 

My dealer did my lift before I even drove it off the lot. Definitely covered in warranty.

 

Yes...some dealers use .....DSI (dealer services intl.). That is who does the lifts on the new Tundras that are sold with a lift at some dealerships. DSI provides a warranty for their work as well.

 

Ok. I talked to the dealer and they are a real PITA!!! The service manager said that they only warranty their work for one year and I would have to prove that they did something wrong. He also said that the warranty on other items such as differential, CV joints, driveshaft, etc. affected by the lift would not be covered under warranty anymore. I argued that that was just wrong but he stood his ground.

Long story short...that dealer can kiss my a$$. Looks like if you modify your truck, extended warranties are worthless...unless you want to battle it out.

 

The driveshaft will not be affected by the lift. Nor will the differential. Thats just pure lies.

The only thing he is correct about is the cv’s. They will wear faster with a 3 inch lift. Now a 2 inch lift they would have to warranty the cv’s. since it is “fine” on a trd pro.

What you could do is keep your factory Shocks and swap them back in if you ever have warranty work done on the front drivetrain

 

True. Which is another reason I need to do it myself.

 

I do lifts minus the Alignment. It takes me about 5 hours and the cost is not nearly that of the dealer.... I would definitely shop around if I was you.
