Does anyone regularly drive your truck in the manual/sport mode? I know it’s useful for towing and also a steep grade letting your engine along with brakes slow you down. I haven’t used it on my truck yet. I have heard it could also help on gas mileage also

All it does is change the shifting points, if you are going up a hill and the truck is struggling, you can shift down a gear placing more torque at the wheels, however, the rpm will go up causing your mpg to go down.

S mode does not change the shift points. Only tow haul does.

OP I use S mode all the time. Most of the time I use 5th at most in the city.

Toyota calls it sequential shift, I use it all the time, the computer will still override it if you get too crazy on the shifts. I wish they offered a manual transmission, I still find myself trying to step on the clutch with my left foot!

Well, delays the shift a bit. I use it all the time as it gives a bit better pick up. Turn off the nanny's, turn on tow mode and the party is on.

Can't remember the last time I shifted into "D". With my 10" BA Exhaust and IPT Valve Body upgrade with shift kit, shifting myself just makes for a much better ride. Instead of changing gears with the throttle, I choose the gear 'I' know is best. Helps keep the Torque Converter locked and prevents heat producing constant shifts. I've owned 2 Dodge trucks, so I've talked to several Transmission Techs over the years:rolleyes:. To the last one, they've all told me that people shouldn't allow their automatic transmissions to shift themselves to death, especially when there are other gears available, that would keep the heat down and the fluid cooler.

    Exactly!

I’d like to do that ITP valve body and shift kit. That sounds fun.

John Lombardo out of New Jersey is the owner of IPT. He was easy to talk to and patient, answering all my questions/concerns. Core- charge was a no hassle deal and made the change-out really simple for the Transmission Shop. His # is 1-866-828-7267 in case you want to get details.

I shift manually more often when I’m offroad than on. The truck can’t predict terrain changes the way I can, nor can it respond fast enough to my last second decision to slide around a curve instead of just drive like a normal person.

On the street I don’t mess with it much because most of my on pavement driving is pretty flat.

I think @papasmurf is a manual shifter junkie

I’m going to have to try it out. I used to drive a 97 F-350 flat bed dually for work pulling a trencher. It was a manual and I loved it. That old 7.3 was a good motor. Still wish we had it around.

Shit, that’s exactly the rig I’m looking for to pull a fifth wheel. Late nineties 7.3 with a manual.

Won't take you long, being you actually have some knowledge of what gear to be in for a given task. The Sequential Shifter was one of the reasons I bought my Tundra over a 2010 F-150. The lame-a$$ed 5.4 Ford V8 helped seal the deal on the Tundra too!

They are highly sought after! We sold the truck to a guy who wanted it for his company. It had 140k on it when we sold it. I forget how much we let it go for but I still wish it was around.

For the first several months of ownership on my 2018, I just put it in "D" and didn't go into "TOW/HAUL" mode. Then I discovered how great it is in T/H mode plus "S" shifting and that is the only way I drive it now. Getting on the freeway with the afterburners lit is a bunch-o-fun!

I normally drive in automatic mode, but I drop it into sequential most of the time when I'm slowing or braking.

I use it to engine brake all the time. Saves my brake pads/rotors and the ECU cuts fuel when you do it so I'm sure there is some negligible fuel savings there (maybe it adds up though).

I shift manually off-road, and on steep grades, up or down. Not around town.

No joke.... When we got our Tundra I was already planning on using our '96 F-250 PS as a trade in. Didn't really want to fool with having to sell it privately even though I would have gotten more. When I mentioned what kind of vehicle we would use for trade-in (we hadn't brought it with us as we were not planning on buying just then) all they asked was "Does it have any major body damage". They gave us well above KBB on the trade-in sight unseen. The sales manager was up-front and said they would make a comfortable return on it as that body style (pre-99) was in high demand for a work/farm truck.

It’ll be choked to death with emissions bullshit and end up a turd like all the modern ones. Only thing going for it will be the marketing of ‘return of the 7.3’
    Bummer.

Yeah. We have two 6.7 fords right now that we use for work. Both have been great actually. Tons of power but that new emissions and DEF fluid junk sucks. Even our equipment has to have it. They would all have so much more power if it was deleted.

The new 7.3 is a gasser unfortunately. They are keeping the 6.7 diesel.

I use manual shifting all the time to engine break down hills. I really should use it more but it’s just not the same without a clutch :(

I have messed with it a few times, but i agree with JH5370 - it's just not the same without the clutch.

Do you guys let off the gas pedal to up shift or just bump the shifter?

I'll feather the pedal between 4th and 5th to eliminate the 'flare' at the change. Downshifting at the base of a hill, I'll 'help-out' with the pedal to smooth the shift, usually without adding throttle. For me, every shift depends on speed, load and road conditions. Where I live there are a bunch of roads that 3-4th gears are ideal to keep rpm's at the Torque Converter 'lock-up' range.
