Been trying to find research on running a bed cap on a crew max with my RTT mounted on top as well Ive looked at several companies and seen the static weight suggestions. Just curious who currently has this set up and it could be any brand just looking for details on whether or not they like it and if the cap can truly support the weight. Thanks pics for details.

I will be running an Eezi-Awn 1600 T-Top on my ARE Z-Series starting this summer. I ran it on a Range Rider canopy on my 2003 Tacoma for long before RTT's were cool (over a decade) with zero issues. I just got the ARE canopy on the new Tundra last month so won't put on the RTT until late spring.

Fiberglass canopies are like boat hulls. They can take a tremendous amount of pressure/load as long as it's dispersed evenly. You can put a thousand pounds in the boat and the hull won't break - but you hit it with a hammer and it will crack. Same thing with a canopy. As a STATIC load (standing still/parked) you can easily have +500 lbs up there.

No company will give a rating beyond standard roof rack (around 200 lbs) with a few exceptions. The big reason is static vs dynamic. A litigious public can't understand the difference. Regardless of the vehicle, canopy, etc, it is rare that a load greater than 200 lbs is safe on a moving vehicle. It changes the centre of gravity and in a crash it's simply dangerous. This is why no canopy company wants to say yes to any load higher than what a Yakima or Thule cross bar is rated for.

There are some caveats that really have nothing to do with a RTT, but more the fiberglass cap. For daily use and overlanding they are great. I've done some crazy trails in the past that pushed the articulation of the truck beyond it's limits. But fiberglass isn't great for dessert jumpers and really crazy offroad. There are torsional stresses that crack fiberglass and any weight on the roof multiply the impact.

My advice, is to get a good quality canopy like an ARE or Snugtop. Use a track system and 3 crossbars to disperse the weight evenly.

If you really want to research RTT's go to www.ExpeditionPortal.com

I have a SnugTop with the Sportsman Package which includes a thicker roof to support 500lbs. I’ve got a Prinsu rack on top that holds my Tepui Ayer tent and an ARB 2500 awning. I also have one Baja Design S2 Sport work/scene light in each left and right side of the rack and 2 on the rear of the rack (1 work/scene & 1 combo amber as a chase light).

Let me know if you would like any detail photos of anything

Whoa! Never knew something like this existed. If needed how easy is it to uninstall?

Could you post some additional photos of your rack setup. I've got the same SnugTop and I'm on the fence between the prinsu and rhino rack pioneer platform. I like the prinsu asthetic, but wonder how strong the rack is without the additional lateral supports. Just looking at the design, the pioneer platform looks like it would be sturdier, but would love some real world input based on your setup. TIA

If you have any you can post along with those requested above, can you please post photos of your scene lighting. Mainly the areas it lights up. But also helpful would be, where it's mounted on the rack, the path the wires were routed... and what controller you're using (where). Have you got a second battary?

You've got a great set up; I'd like to know more. Thanks in advance!
So... if you check out KevinK's Komodo build, his (wife's) MGM crew cab has a JB Grand Raid RTT mounted over a custom (low profile) bedrack.

The guy I bought my shell from ran this setup for a few years. Basic Snugtop (it does have the thicker area in the middle of the roof) with 3 Yakima cross bars. He had no issues with him, he's a big guy, and his wife and a couple of dogs.

If you mean you want to see pics of KevinK's CC with the Grand Raid, use the search feature (small magnifying glass near top of your screen on the right, below the Alert. For subject enter "Komodo" and enter KevinK as the poster. You'll get multiple hits and can look through these to find his build.

I didn't post a link here because, with 248 posts under your belt, I want to make sure you know how to search to get the best info. Someone showed me back when, and it totally got me going.

Here is a pic of the @Baja Designs S2 Sports. The sides are clear work/scene reflectors. The rear middle is clear wide/cornering with work/scene reflectors until I switch out to spot lens. The right passenger side rear is amber combo lens for my chase light. I plan to add another rear S2 on the driver side with a red combo lens.
