Hi fam Im new to the forum and had a quick question. I recently purchased a 2016 Tundra crewmax limited and the check engine light came on after my first fill up. Thought it was the gas cap and tightened the cap but the light was still on. Took it to the dealer and was advised that everytime the light came on I had to take it in and have it checked. It was the gas cap and light was turned off by the dealer. After the second fill up same problem and advised the dealer of previous problem and they told me the same thing but this time I was told there may be a problem with the cap but no leaks. By the third time I took it in for the same issue the dealer was already in talks with the Toyota engineers and kept it for about a week to get to the bottom of this problem. After about a week I was told that there was a leak but not from the cap or the gas tank but from the valve it self and the gas tank has to be replaced all together. The truck is brand new and is under warranty and Im not concerned about the cost. What I am concerned about is the fact that the gas tank has to be replaced on a brand new truck. Also is the replacement of the gas tank itself not a "big deal" as the sealer stated or should I be concerned? Just frustrated that I cant enjoy my brand new truck with less than 900 miles on it. Thanks in advance for any insight on this issue

Not a big deal at all. Should only take them a couple hours to do. Welcome to the site!

Nah. Hell, I replaced my buddy's gas tank on his Ram (2004). That was a royal pita b/c we dint take off the bed which would have made it easier.

I wouldn't be concerned. Not every single item in manufacturing can always be perfect. Material, manufacturing, and humans can- and do make mistakes.

No big deal at all. EPA mandates that all fuel tank vapors be filtered through a charcoal canister underneath your truck. If the system isn't air tight, it'll throw a code, but it does absolutely nothing with how your truck runs at all.
My 2016 threw the code because there was an air leak around the charcoal canister and freaked out until members of the forum showed me that it was no big deal.
Glad they are taking care of you. Enjoy your truck. Welcome to the forum.

I'd rather have the gas tank replaced than have the engine torn into for the Cam Tower Leak.

Agree with this for sure. Non mechanical item being replaced and not a pulling apart a new engine.

That was a painful memory to say the least. Fortunately doesn't appear to be a very common issue.

good morning fam. I recently got my truck back with the new gas tank and when i filled it up it stopped at 28 gallons. It was blinking empty at the time of the pick up so i was expecting a 38 gallon fill up. I spoke to the service manager and they advised that it is a 38 gallon tank and because its a new tank the sensor might be off and just to watch it over the next few fill ups. Now when I saw the display menu it read 600 miles till empty so I believe it is a 38 gallon tank. My question is, is it possible the sensor is off because of it being new and if it is do I need to take it back in to get that corrected. Thanks in advance.

From what I understand, Toyota did that on purpose to make sure people weren't running on fumes all the time and ruining their fuel pumps. More fuel in the tank = cooler fuel pump = longer fuel pump life.

This. Your 38 gal tank will only hold about 30 gal of useable gas. They do this to keep the pump from overheating and to keep you off the side of the road!
