I'm almost counting on the new one being a letdown. I sure hope not, but I feel like it's coming.

    A bunch
The 1/2 ton market is way more in demand than the sport coupe market is. When they did the '07 re-design they did it right, and I have faith they will do so again in '21. There's a few marks they have to hit - comparable towing and payload (12k and 2k) at minimum, apple car play and android auto. The other big thing is the engines - there's 2 crowds they should try to satisfy. Keep the 5.7 for a few years, an updated V8 can wait, but pair it with a powerful fuel efficient motor. This can either be turbo or hybrid, but it needs to have more power and be more fuel efficient than the 5.7. The transmission doesn't have to be 8 speed or higher as long as the fuel efficiency numbers are hit, although I see an 8 speed being a foregone conclusion.

Based on the spy photos they have to be doing something in the rear suspension - this is a luxury they didn't have to do, and as long as it doesn't affect payload/towing then great. Toyota is a very smart company and they know they have a chance to capitalize on the growing truck market. With Ram and GM just doing major re-designs and Ford most likely 90% of the way through theirs, if they blow them out of the water with capability AND fuel efficiency to go with the tech they can gain a huge market share over the next 3-4 years. Because of this possibility I don't see them doing something similar to the Supra, I see them going all out and hitting it out of the ballpark.

I hope not , but my guess would be this as well. I would like the truck to be more heavy duty but I do not think Toyota is going to chase that with the next gen Tundra. I think they will go after the crowd of people who just use the truck for commuting and occasional hauling, which IRS would ride better for those folks and a smaller turbo motor will make them happier.

as long as they give you a switch to start in 2nd or snow mode. thats great for when you are on dry pavement pulling a load, but crap when you are stopped at an icy intersection and trying not to spin tires from a stop.

I've drove hybrids and Tesla's. Put me down for a hybrid tundra anyday. Maybe a year or two after the first release so they can iron out any foreseen issues.

No ford fan, was saying it would be nice to have a similar type engine. Push rod engines have big tq in low rpms and the simplicity of the design is durable.

I agree about if it is not broken, but we all know the drivetrain is going to change, we just don’t know how it will change.

Tesla came out of nowhere and provided a compelling reason to leave hybrids and upgrade to electrics. Tesla has a truck in the works that I believe will grab hundreds of thousands of waiting and willing truck buyers. Ford is also currently testing a plug in from some pics floating on the net. As soon as a catagory killer comes out it will be difficult for the legacy manufacturers to compete.

Tesla is amazing, but if every manufacturer switched to electric vehicles, how many years would it take for battery production to ramp up to that demand? Tesla has good ideas, but scaling up their model is probably many years off

Tesla is only cost competitive in the market because they're subsidized with tax dollars. I say end the subsidies and let them live or die on their own merits.
If electrics and hybrids are really that great then the end user should get the privilege of paying for them completely instead of making me pay for my vehicle plus part of theirs.

Well, amazing in that Tesla has almost never made any money. The problem with using an electric car has always been energy storage; batteries don't really hold that much energy compared to gasoline or diesel. Battery prices may drop some more but all current types of battery chemistry in existence aren't that far from their limits as far as energy density is concerned. The "300 mile" battery costs what, $30k? Put that battery through 500 deep discharge and temperature cycles and it will be at the end of life. Want to charge your battery quickly? That will shorten its life as well. Electric cars have been around for over a century but never achieved much market share due to the inherent limitations of batteries.

especially for northern tier winters. when your battery pack get ~300 miles in the summer and then gets ~150-200 miles in the winter compared to gas that might get 2-3 mpg less.

also let me see, do i like having to charge it everywhere i go in the winter compared to just filling up a tank maybe at most once a week?

nice vehicle and concept but not practical currently for when your temps drop below zero for weeks on end.

we did the math on a Tesla sedan. the cheapest one. model 3 I think? a buddy got one and gave me a ride in it. the instant torque is indeed intoxicating. anyways wife and I looked up charging costs on a Tesla site by state and found we'd save about $50/mo or so on fuel vs an accord or Camry. which cost about half to buy. and have no range issues.

No thanks to electric, I don't want to be limited by range. Plus with trucks we tow, go in the woods etc. They would have to create charging stations that could Accommodate a truck and trailer. Just to many limitations vs. what you gain imo.

All manufacturers take design que’s from each other. I think the new Tundra front grill area will look like the new Ford Ranger, the cab will remain the same, and who knows on the bed. I hope the payload increases, and a more gas mileage friendly V8 (Lexus?), without cam tower leaks, replaces the 5.7. Toyota keeps changes very secret, so we wait and hope for something good.
