Hello everyone I was hoping I can get some expertise on my dumb mistake. I was driving in 4 high and was thought that I was going to put it on 2 Wheel Drive but instead I turn my knob left on accident! My 4 low was flashing and something was beeping within five seconds I turn my knob back to 2 Will Drive while still driving. I don’t think it was fully engaged in 4Lo because it was still flashing . My concern is I did smell some like propane in the car right after. The smell quickly went away but I hope I didn’t damage anything. Any insight is much appreciated.

You didn't damage anything. The truck won't go into 4lo until you put it in neutral and then go into 4lo. You're fine

Thank you! Any idea what the propane/burning smell could be?

Good question. There's nothing propane on our trucks so I'm not quite sure about that one. Could it have come from outside?

Possibly, it did happen right after I accidentally turned the knob to 4Lo and back to 2wd.

Because you never stopped, put the truck into neutral and engage the 4lo, you were never in 4lo at any point. It was only in 4hi the whole time.

Are you sure that odor just isn’t in your head? To be be in 4L you must be in 4H, stop and then neutral.

Well my wife was in truck we both smelled it. I know I was in 4Lo because once I turned the knob to 4Lo , 4Lo was flashing but it never stopped flashing... until I turned the knob to 2wd.

Right, I just wanted to make sure I didn’t mess up anything mechanical. You always here them emphasizing you have to be in neutral... so I just started freaking out .

If you think that is scary... you can put your shifter into reverse at highway speeds. :eek2: It won’t actually shift the transmission into reverse, but it will turn the back-up camera on. o_O

Some say they use it to check their trailer hitch, though I prefer to do that pre-trip, and often wonder what folks would do if they discovered a hitch issue via the camera at high speed. :notsure: Pound on the brakes? Ignore it? Hit the gas?

I’ve bumped mine into 4wd with my knee also. Bad spot for the switch.

I've reached down to turn down a/c fan speed and not realized it turned the 4wd switch. Luckily I was driving in traffic so switching into 4Hi wasn't a big deal and was able to promptly switch back. Wish the knob was a little further up

Its a really bad spot for the 4w knob and looks like a complete afterthought. Right by the ac knob and turns the same way is a really really bad design. I have bumped the knob before on a long trip adjusting my seating comfort while going 75mph and dont even know how long it was in 4hi before i noticed!!!:eek2::mad: Yea i had the smell of fear too! Luckily that has been over two years ago and i have not noticed any issues at all as i do test it out every month going straight.

A vehicle in front of you? A propane factory on the road you passed?

Yep. Your wife saw the opportunity of the FUBAR to blame it on the truck, and cranked one out.
