@trdprobped17 if I have all the windows down and I am going real slow I can hear a little bit of squeaking. It doesn't bother me, and I'm pretty picky.

 

I also just added the swing box. Great addition to the under seat storage I installed. MUCH needed storage problem solved!!!

 

Do the Swing Cases extend out past the wheel wells when closed? My concern is that I need at least 48” of clearance when they’re closed to accommodate sheet goods. Thanks!

 

I'll have to look, I think it may be just slightly protruded from the wheel well...

I only have one Swing case so I couldn't measure the distance between them. I measured the total width near the tailgate, 60". Then I measured the distance my Swing case stuck out from there, ~6.75" to be safe.




6.75"+6.75"= 13.5"
60"-13.5"= 46.5"

I would say you have about 46.5" of space between Swing cases to stack stuff.

Now, with that being said, they are super easy to remove. Pull a lever, allow them to swing, lift right up. Obviously they will be as heavy as you load them.

If someone has two installed you will get a more precise answer.

 

I have two swing cases installed and I cannot put a 4'x8' sheet of plywood in the bed unless I remove one of the cases. Agree with @MotoTundra - they are really easy to take out when you need to carry something big. The advantage of having storage for tools and gear far outweighs the hassle of needing to take them out at times.

 

I had them in my 17 Ram and I ended up selling them. They were great for storage but not so great when you would load up the bed with stuff and when you get close to the tailgate and realize you need to lift your tonneau cover up a bit to get that last piece of wood to fit and rest on top of the tailgate and not have to drive with your tailgate down, if you have a soft tri-fold cover like I did with the latch that latches under the sides of the bed, I had to take everything out of the back of the bed so I could swing the cases out to undo the cover latches, lift up the cover and then put everything back in. When it's pouring raining out and you're getting soaking wet, you tend to forget about the swing cases needing to be swung out to get to your cover latches..LOL!! A couple of times this has happened and that was it for me. Also, if you keep the entire bed full of stuff in which they are by the swing cases, if you need to get something from the swing case, you need to remove the stuff first so you can swing the case out to open it. This inconvenience mainly applies to those who have the tonneau cover with latches. If you have the type of cover that slides open like the Extangs, or no cover at all, then you're good. I didn't think of these things at the time of purchasing the swing cases because I was excited to get them but after a while of them being a hassle, I got rid of them and just got a storage case to keep in the back of the bed. If I need room, I put the storage case on the back seat which would be the same for the swing cases if you had to remove them. Just something to keep in mind for those who have the tonneau cover like I did. I have the same type of cover for my Tundra now and the same storage case in the back of the bed and it all works out.

So, to be clear, the cargo hook holes are being used to support the case right? Then you're really just driling in the 4 extra holes?

 

Nope, the cargo hook holes wind up empty.

You have to drill a total of 6 easy holes.

 

I ended up mounting one of the swing cases on the driver's side of my CM. I hadn't seen the posting on the bed mounted tie downs so I came up with a variation. I took a heavy duty hinge strap and shortened the length of the single leg of the strap, drilled a hole to line up with the stock tie down mounting holes and placed it in the original spot. You can see in the first picture that the bottom of the hinge strap goes down behind the case mounting bracket. Then I shortened a 1/2" eye bolt and mounted through the strap. This moved the eye for the tie down out away from the box a little. It isn't as strong as the stock tie down but it is pretty stout. The hinge strap is pretty heavy duty and the eye bolt is rated for something like 2,200 lbs. I've torqued a few ratchet straps on several occasions, it's easy to tell when you've reached when you need to stop ratcheting. There were a few small tweaks in there that I haven't addressed, but this covers it mostly. I'd be happy to go into more detail if anyone is interested. I'm new at this posting with pictures so forgive me if they don't show up.

 

for those with the swing case, I tow a trailer majority of the time and letting the bed door down is not a good option for me because it would hit the trailer handle.

Can I swing the case and get in it easily without having to let the door down or would i have to climb in the bed to get in the case? Im 6 ft tall and truck is not lifted.

 

I haven't done it in a while, I will try it tomorrow.

I know when I towed my boat I was able to access it with the tailgate closed. I have skinny lanky arms and was able to pull the release, swing it out about 45°, remove what small items I needed to, all with the tailgate closed. It was a bit of a pain though and wouldn't want to do it often.

You can also partially open the tailgate to get more wiggle room to pull the release.

I may be able to try it and post a video.

I would double check with the other guys on here before just going on my experience. Others may feel it's a real pain or may not be able to fit their arm in there to put the release.

@csuviper do you ever access your swing case with the tailgate up?

 

@atl1glf this morning I did a quick check for you.

I find it easy to access the swing case with the tailgate up. You need to pull this release, then it can open to about 45° and it can open all the way.

For shorter guys or to make it easier you can stand on the rear bumper so the release is easier to reach.

This is the wiggle room you have to get your arm in there, not bad at all.

 

I will probably pull the trigger then and try one out

 

When I bought my Tundra it already had the dual swing case setup with the hard UnderCover tonneau and I love it.

 

If you make one that can lock and hold a rifle and isn't stupid expensive like the ESP one is, I'd buy it.

Yes they will block those lights. I had them in my Ram and my bed lights were in the same spot as yours and the swing cases blocked most of the lighting. I ended up getting rid of them.

I’m looking at the hard under tonneau cover storage box. Do you have it with the OEM hard trifold?

 

I have a much simpler and less expensive solution for under the cover. Tupperware!
