Timing belt cost to install?

Hey Guys, I am new to this forum, I have a 06 Tundra with 71000 on it. I know the timing belt change is coming and I know it hasn't been changed. I know to change the water pump, belt, and all the other parts, I'll even change the anti freeze and oil. Might as well. Anywho what is the normal cost to do this, NOT AT THE DEALER, I like them but this is going to a mechanic. I guess my question is how many hours does this job require?

 

Is that for a 3rd gen or 1st gen?

 

Dealership charged me around $900 for timing belt and water pump. Next time I'll shop around for a better deal.

Look on Amazon. Aisan is the same as oem just cheaper. This is what I got for my 03 Sequoia.

I haven’t installed it yet. But from my research on this forum, this is equivalent to oem.

 

I wish those low prices quoted above would fall like Wally mart in my area.

I've used Gates belts on my Tacoma and 4Runner. Excellent quality from a reputable company.

 

Yup! Go pay more just to have Toyota stamped on it, or order Aisan, pay less for the same part. Lol

 

Iirc, Aisin was started by Toyoda himself. They make all the automatic transmissions used in Toyotas. They also make the best locking hubs.

That’s a good deal. Under a G total is fair in my mind. 4-500 dollars labor for an all day job. It ain’t free but it’s not a total ripoff.

 

Under a G is very fair. Including the crankshaft seal and camshaft seal it pushed me over totaling $1145. I noticed the

TKT-021 kit cost $415.95 with $379.07 labor.

When it was said and done they gave me a club discount and a birthday discount even though it wasn’t my birthday or club. Walked out around $896. Very Fair.

 

I dunno. Others reported getting the T Belt, water pump, tensioner pulley, thermostat, and drive belt all done for the same price. Next time I won't go to the dealership.

 

I was assuming that’s what all was involved. If it wasn’t then it is a rip off.

 

To me those are mandatory items to be replaced during a timing belt change.

 

I went dealer on mine and was 1100 including the pump, seals, serp belt, fluids and a rental black corolla to off road in. Not bad I think but I had to haggle, they tried adding stuff at book rate and I objected since it's all apart already.

I asked 2 small shops first but they wouldn't use parts if I bought them and weren't into buying Toyotas stuff. One wanted to use all Dorman stuff.

Cost me roughly $750 to replace timing belt and water pump on my 2006 Tundra about 4 years ago.

 

Toyota of Knoxville. Here is the full story. I called ahead of time and got a quote. From there I made an appointment. When I showed up for the appointment a different service adviser helped me and I mentioned to him the price I was quoted because I wanted to make sure they wouldn't try to come in higher after the fact. This was a mistake. Once the repairs were done I went back to the service desk to get my keys and paperwork. I noticed they had actually come in lower by $60 but then added a $60 charge to clean my throttle body. When I asked him about this he looked flustered and pretended to disappear to "ask the tech". He came back with a bullshit story about how the vehicle was "making a noise after replacing the timing belt" so the tech cleaned the throttle body. As if they are somehow related.

So basically, they came in $60 less than I was quoted and created a bullshit charge for the throttle body to make up the difference. It was just a pure coincidence that both were $60.

 

Local Toyota/Lexus mechanic I use quoted my $800 when I had a Sequoia. Parts + Labor. I agree with above, under $1,000 is good.

 

It kinda burns me up because Toyota put these crappy timing belts in a awesome motor, and you have to replace them every 80,000 to 90,000. I stay on top of maintenance a timing chain would fix this. But none out there. And on top of it if you don't change it when it breaks your motor is trashed. I'm off my soap box!

 

Timing chains don’t last forever. And when they do break it’s just as bad. There’s no service interval that I know of for the timing chain. So as long as you do the belt in the 4.7 it will probably last longer than any timing chain motor because of it being a necessity.

Yeah that sounds just like them. Seems like there is some kind of catch or just something happens every time I am in there. You can buy a coke in the waiting room and there is some kind of up sell or a catch, haha...

Bought 3 Toyota's from them but I have to admit Fox Toyota is much easier to deal with as far as service. Cheaper, no up selling, and they get you in and out in half the time. We have been taking our vehicles to them.

If I had a $ for every time I have had a ball joint or our brake fluid is dirty at Toyota of Knoxville.....

None of that at Fox, but man they are high on vehicle purchases!

 

15whtrd, I don't know, I have had many cars and trucks, with a timing chain I never had one go bad, I'm not saying they don't but I never had that issue. That said a timing belt is a bad idea, they do this because of cost, trust me they don't give a damn about the consumer. Yes Toyota included. My Tundra is awesome, this timing belt every 100K is silly. I plan to drive mine for a long time.
