    hi there,

i started changing the timing belt yesterday and today the truck is broken good.

i have had nothing but problems and now am regretting attempting the belt change.

at this point, the motor only turns about a quarter turn either direction and hits a hard stop.

i've had trouble removing the main pulley, but when it came off, 3 mystery pieces showed up. i now have a spring, a bearing and small metal rod that i have no clue where they came from.
the crank moved when pulling the pulley, both cams have moved trying to line up the marks. how do i get back to zero and start over?

    left over parts

    any help appreciated!

what would be the hard stop either direction on the main crank? this doesnt sound good.

the left over parts may be from a swivel socket i broke trying to get the crank pulley off.

i got the pulley off by bumping the starter. i had taken the timing belt off of the cams before i did the starter. the remaining belt wedged up around the crank a half a turn and bent the toothed thingy.
now the crank hits hard (bang) stops about a quarter to half a turn apart.

thanks, i forgot about the superbowl, this dang timing.

That's some lousy luck. You'll probably need to at least pull the valve covers to get an idea of where the valves are at. Hopefully the hard stop you're getting isn't from hitting a valve.

If I get a chance this afternoon I'll get the service manual pages for resetting everything.

You can’t turn the crank without turning the cams in exact time with it. Well you can, but you won’t have much of an engine left if you do. The valves and pistons occupy the same space at some points... that’s why cam timing is so important. You’re probably hearing a valve and a piston loving on one another.

Hold the Line! If you are not holding the line, abandon your ship. Destruction is inevitable without more to hold the line!
I believe the 2003 VVti 4.7l motors are an interference engine, so the hard stop might be a valve and piston hitting one another.

This is what you need to do
    1. Google up a tow truck, or a uhaul and a car hauler go get either.
    2. Google "mechanic"
    3. Read google reviews
    4. Delete funds from bank account, head to shop
    5. Apologize to mechanic for any mess you made, usually a case of beer is an acceptable offering, along with lots of $$$$

Probably need to pull the heads at this point since you bumped the crank with the starter
Then you should have the ability to turn the crank by hand to do what you need

Or as others have said have it towed to a shop and let let them repair it.

I changed my '05 2uzfe belt twice and a friend's '00 2uzfe once. It's driveway doable if you have patience. The first time I did it on my '05, I had a ton of problems and had to disassemble it to get the cams aligned with the belt correctly, then disassemble again to fix a leaking water pump gasket. I bet your belt and cams aren't aligned properly. That part was a PITA every time. There are a couple great Youtube vids to watch, the one with the mex music playing, from the Toyota Tech, was the best to watch. This guy https://youtu.be/Z46cM-Bw1rI

Did it actually destroy a piston? Should be able to take heads to a machine shop and have heads rebuilt with new valves... at least you know what you have then.

The pistons are almost certainly fine. I had a subaru break a timing belt while driving, which destroyed a all the valves on one side but just put some dings in the piston. I got a new head from a JDM importer and drove the car for another five years. If this where me that is what I would do.

Sorry you killed your engine. Now you know why the manuals say never turn the engine with the timing belt off.
