“It seems like buyers are turning away from SUVs and premium crossovers and looking instead at premium trucks. We can’t even build enough Tundra TRDs to satisfy the demand,” Hunter told motoring.com.au recently, speaking about Toyota’s full-sized ‘pick-up’ in the US.

“We have a really rugged truck image in the US and we’re aiming to keep that. We want to build on what we have, especially in the US. Those trucks are built on a work-truck reputation, along with hard-core off-roading – that’s what we’re aiming for.”

Ah hell yeah! But if they do a hybrid in the future, no way in hell I’ll buy one. Love my gas guzzling V8.

So are they saying there's a chance the TRD Pro could be stepped up to truly compete with the Raptor as a Baja truck or the Power Wagon as a rock crawler? (I'm sticking with pickups because there's no way a long wheelbase vehicle could beat a Jeep platform in rock crawling). Make 2 versions - one with lockers and disconnecting sway bars (along with more clearance) and another with beefed up suspension mounts and long travel suspension

I have a hard time believing they’d sell enough to completely retool their factories to make those two versions. Hell, it’s cheaper to put an aftermarket MT setup on than buy it from the dealership set up like a Raptor anyway. And I guarantee that a factory stock LT setup would either not be true LT or they’d have to add like 40% to the MSRP for it.

I read an article the other day that indicated tundra would be putting out a new version of the 5.7 with a new transmission. I’ll try to remember to dig it up and post it here.

Not ruling out a tundius... pridra? Prius-Tundra.

How about both? Get a 450 HP-450 lb.ft 5.7, and a 420 HP-550 lb.ft hybrid. Traction Control will have to work OT to keep those in line:burnrubber:

Good to hear, part of the reason why I keep buying Tundra's is because they are rugged and they are offroad capable. They aren't like the other big 3 trucks that a low to the ground, these sit up higher (stock) which is very nice. And you can fit decent sized tires on with just a 3" lift.

If a new version could get even 415 hp and 450 lbs of torque while still being naturally aspirated, with 6 or 8 speed transmission, they’d be onto something.

I think I read 8 or gearless? I know very little about transmissions... something about new transmission technology.

    We’ll see soon enough :)

Sounds better than 10, that's just too many damn gears but 8 would probably work. I know little about trannies as well, probably better that way ;)

Yes, it is. It's by no means a trophy truck, which some owners think it is, but it is a very capable truck. Ford hit the nail on the head building the Raptor. At least 50% (or more) of the race teams that race in Baja have at least one Raptor to chase or use for a recovery vehicle. The problem with the Raptor, other than being a Ford, is that the warranty is voided the instant you take it off-road.

Yup. I have a friend that bought a Raptor. He's a professional photographer and shoots all the races. His first trip to Baja with it he was prerunning some of the course to scout locations. He got the truck stuck in a tight spot in 2wd. He put it in 4wd and ended up blowing up the front differential. He' got it back stateside and took it to the dealership to get it fixed as it was brand new truck and they told him it was voided because he took it offroad and they refused to fix it.

Wow. Just wow. Out here in cattle country, seems like quite a few guys have a 6.2L Raptor as their town truck. Maybe its better that they're all town trucks.

Having ran multiple CVT tractors, I'm not sure that I'd be a fan of a vehicle having one. They're nice for slow speed operation in a field but at high speeds (such as when you're moving field to field) can be downright maddening.

I had a CVT in a Dodge Caliber several years ago.
That thing would scream on the highway around 3k RPMs. I couldn't imagine a larger vehicle using this type of transmission...

I'd have no problem being that. We'd have to rap the engine up as high as we could to even get the tractors to go 28 mph on the road, so I'd have a hard time believing an on highway vehicle would be much different.

Ford covering their bases. They knew people would take it offroad and break it. If they had to warranty all the broken Raptors that had been taken offroad they'd be out millions of dollars.
