Looking at a 2022 Tundra tomorrow that a local dealership just got in today. It strikes me as odd since 2023’s are rolling in. It’s an SR5 with the TRD OR package.

Would you guys be suspicious about this? It concerns me by itself buying a new tundra that 2022 was the 1st year of the model year and problems tend to happen with the first year but I keep wondering why this particular truck might have been held back at the factory.

Tin foil hat or legit concern?

Whenever I have had a question about the history of new vehicle, I acquire the build date and compare to inservice date. Mine was built in 2/22 and put in service 3/22 with 6 miles on it. If there is a very big gap, more than a couple months, I have asked a sales manager if there was a quality hold. This isn’t always bad as they could have been waiting for chips or other parts. Then I ask for a printed copy of any service records at Toyota dealerships. Most service departments will help you with this if you bring them the VIN and ask nicely. If there was a problem repaired at a dealership it will be documented. Im not sure if they can hide a buy back or lemon but they would typically have more miles on them. Paying for a Carfax report is another way to piece together the history of the vehicle you are considering including manufacture date. You could learn it was titled in the past then returned to a dealer. I did all this on mine because I got tired of waiting for the exact new truck I wanted and found a used 22 Tundra with exactly what I wanted. In the end you have a bumper to bumper warranty for 3/36. If problems arise Toyota will make it right. Good luck with your purchase. Oh and mine has no repair history and none of the issues you may have read about on Forums or FB groups. I have 9200 miles on mine and I absolutely love it. Thought you might want to hear about a good experience given forums sometimes share bad experiences more than good.

just watch some 2022 quality videos and check them out on the truck your going to look at.

I was in the same boat as you, and got a late model 22, Dealer order in July, delivered to lot in Nov, if you actually look at the toyota "inventory around you" you can see some older 22 are still being delivered to dealer lots "on the way", this caused the confusion for me since I saw:

    8361A
    8361C

And they had price differences, the A was built earlier in the year, and obviously my C was end of the year (nov), also found out Toyota just raises MSRP in the middle of the year, found all this out since I was confused about same 2022 model years with exact same builds but were off by $750 MSRP.

I do see some 8361A finally getting shipped right now, most likely these were all held back for some quality issue/parts and then finally got them out to dealers.

I read and saw alotta posts about wait until a 2023, they willl get all the bugs worked out so was looking specifically at a 23, well I do know my sr5 was basically built around the same time or even later then other limited 23 were being delivered to dealers, it still has the same shitload of bugs, watch some 23 videos and its still very much hit/miss. Also getting the package I got now in 23 would raise the msrp of the truck I have by 6k (per Toyota's configuartor) - I still think a dealer could order it the way I wanted it though.

You can go take a look at it, inspect it, drive it and see how you feel about it. I would only consider it if it's a late 2022 build as there were a few people who report issues with the early builds.

There was a new Tundra buying checklist somewhere on the forum..

If you need a Tundra right now, you can take a look and perhaps negotiate a good deal. If you can wait, then wait for a 23.

Where it will make a difference is if you sell it within the next 3 years. The 22 will depreciate much more rapidly than the 23. If you keep it 5+ years, it won't make much of a difference.

I am sure it was held up somewhere, but that just means they found something and you didn’t have to. Or it was waiting on just a particular thing for whatever reason and they wouldn’t release it. I waited for nearly 5 months for a truck that sat in the rail yard that whole time. No one would say what was wrong with it. Eventually I gave up. I would bet by now someone else is driving it once they fixed whatever it was.

I ended getting a used one much like Perry1060 just described (it was almost the same scenario) and it’s been great. It does have the drivers seat trim piece cracked and some window flashing but I have an appointment to get those replaced under warranty.

At any rate, I would bet there will be 22’s trickling out here and there for another month. I mean if it’s a new truck with under 100 miles on it then drive it and see what you think.

My guess is quality improvement is more continuous and ongoing than "let's save all the fixes for next model year" particularly when vehicle is the same across model years.

I bought a late run 22. Saved the 23 price increase, $4500 under MSRP, and got a reasonable trade in off a Carvana quote before wholesale used cars prices implode and Carvana implodes.

So consider all angles and make your best decision with information available.

Given inventory out there I’d take the 22.

Given the reported issues with the 2022's, and the fact that it is December, I would definitely hold out for a 2023.

Maybe some of the bugs will have been resolved.

Also makes sense since one day when you go to sell it, the truck will basically already be a year older.

Lol, this is exactly the incorrect mentality, 23 been on dealer lots since early Oct.

Read earlier posts, watch 23 quality videos and stop spreading bad info.

Also the year means shit when it is like 2027 and you want to buy a 22 or 23 or even 24 with the same miles, dunno how many vehicles you have sold/bought, years doesn't mean much, it's the generation of the model and the mileage is what the value is based on

Went and saw it today. Still super conflicted. It had some thick dust on the hood, so it’s it’s obviously been sitting for a bit. It had an “A” code so I think that means it was an early 2022?

On the plus side it has the TRD value package that adds the larger fuel tank (a must for me) and I don’t think that package exists for 2023’s, at least in my zip code. You need to get the ~$8k TRD premium package to get the bigger tank.

Decided to sleep on it. It’s the truck I want, I just don’t want a problem truck for being impatient. Of course we have a road trip coming up over Xmas and a new truck for the trip is clouding my judgement.

Deal would be at MSRP $52k even.

My '22 SR5 TRD OR CM 5.5 was ordered in July, delivered in Nov. No wind noise, rattles or other common by list standards issues. To be honest, I was just happy to get one after nearly a year 's wait.

No discount, but my '22 was 1200$ cheaper than a same spec '23.

Well, I bought it! Got it for $500 under MSRP and an OEM bed step included. The truck was built in August, so I felt better about the build quality than an early 22 build.

As stated above, it’s cheaper than a comparable 2023, and I didn’t even see the TRD Off-road value package being offered in my area for 2023 in order to get the larger fuel tank in a lower spec TRD OR.

Happy with the purchase and to be back in a Tundra.

Mine was packaged as a SR5 TRD OR Premium with the Convenience package which included the big tank.
