I’ve always been told, grinding doesn’t make you a good welder, it makes you a good grinder.

Isn’t that a quote from J lo or Beyoncé?

I highly suggest the op shows them pictures from this forum and then asks how it is going to be corrected. Obviously the easiest answer is to go elsewhere and have that shop refund your money. Sadly easier said then done sometimes.

Thanks for the tip, I'll get a hold of him today and see what his thoughts are. I'm a fan of tundras.com recommendations and like that he's a smaller outfit.

Wow looking at these BMC I'm glad I went to 88. Looks factory and can't even tell something was cut on my truck. Good luck fixing that.

Yup. Grinding down a weld is called putting on a "Makita Cap". There's a time and place to grind down welds, but even if you're grinding down welds at least take pride in your work. It's like integrity. It's measured when only you see it.

Nevermind that a crap weld won't be as structurally sound as a good weld, ground down or not.

    Update 11SEP2020:

I spoke to the shop owner. I politely made clear my dissatisfaction with the fabrication. He did comment that they were having difficulties with the welder that day, and also seemed to downplay how concerned I was about how they looked. Regardless, we agreed on splitting the cost; I was refunded 137.50. Not an ideal situation but I think that's about as good as a refund as I could get. I also just hate dragging things out and would rather move on from this headache.

I plan on taking my rig elsewhere for the fix, and have since reached out to @adventurefab and am waiting to hear back on whether he wants the work. If anyone else has suggestions in the PDX area I'd love to hear them.

Also, thanks to all for input in helping this along. Definitely inspired by the quality of some of these BMC's!

I'm not a good welder and I know I could have done a better job. I would have asked them to pay to get it done right.

Dude..brings back memories. My dad and grandfather were both precision welders for oil field valves..."If you have to involve a grinder, it's not a good weld!" is what i used to hear ALL the time. I never did it for a living but it was a good experience!

I’ve known ironworkers and boilermakers that would literally fight you if you showed up to weld and had a grinder.

You don’t grind a damn thing when you’re 20-1200 feet in the air.

I believe some oil field guys would do the same.

The bad part is, it’ll cost you more to get it corrected.

Always ask to see some work when getting welds done.
If they’re good they’ll typically show you something anyway.

Agreed. I honestly thought the task was straightforward enough that it wouldn't warrant a thorough investigation. Hell, there are at least 4 youtube clips that show exactly how to do it well!

I've cut my losses on this one. Honestly more upset to have booger welds on a 2019 truck than anything else. Hope to get it all resolved next week.

Well actually, you’re correct. It’s pretty straight forward and your new truck was not deserving.
You owe her a wash and wax or something. Mods always make them happy.

Hope you get it worked out.

Nothing wrong with a lesson learned, atleast you got half back..

You could even cut a little cost off your next install by cutting that hackjob off if you wanted. Angle grinders are cheap and it won't hurt to ride around with it off till then

Just sand the welds down and slap a coat of paint and you’re done. You don’t need to redo it.

I would be very concerned about the lack of penetration and durability of those welds. It's not like it's a direct structural point, but it is the frame. Very poor welding there.

Them's some pretty welds. I should elaborate. The pretty welds are in this post, the original welds are painful to look at.
