Just found a deal on a used bed shell/cap/topper that's about 45 minutes away, in good shape, and is the same color as my 2006 Double Cab but it came off of an Access Cab. Bed length is right and to my eyeballs it looks like the rear of the Double and Access cabs have similar lines. Gonna go look at it tomorrow and hopefully pay the man, clamp it on, and drive it home, but is there a chance it's not gonna be compatible?

I believe that @FirstGenVol is running a Double Cab shell on his Access Cab, and the reverse is true for @MrDirtjumper??

I'm prettysure there is a small difference.
Don't take my word as gospel, but I remember there is a little bit of difference where the shell meets up to the cab of the truck . . . and the length is slightly different as well, not by much, but it is different.
Someone here a while back had posted either a AC shell on a DC truck, or vise versa.
I remember there was like a little bit of the shell hanging over the tailgate, and also the gap between the shell/cab was slightly off.
I think he posted a photo or 2 . . . it wasn't much, probably depends on have particular you are or aren't.
I think left to right they are virtually identical.
Good Luck, and keep us posted.

At minimum there's a 2" difference in bed length. Double Cab has a 6'2" bed and Access/Regular Cab is 6'4" (per my recent Tonneau endeavors).

I'd been casually hunting an Access Cab topper for a while but only thing popping up is already Double Cab. One popped up recently on CL north of ATL but the person who listed it wasn't replying to messages. Sucks to be me I guess.

But yeah, expect the fitment won't be perfect. @FirstGenVol has is running a DC shell on his AC truck, there's a small gap for his, I believe on the side up against the back glass. He showed a picture of that really recently. It looked to be about a 1" gap to me.

You can make it "kinda" work.

It will be off slightly in length and the profile of the cap will not match with the rear cab of the truck.

I now see after searching, this question gets asked pretty commonly.

Here's one of FGV's replies on it saying there's a gap that will cause leaks putting a DC shell on AC truck: https://www.tundras.com/threads/will-03-ac-cap-fit-05-dc.92097/#post-2321010

And for Mr Dirtjumper the AC shells fit better on DC than in the reverse, but has an overhang, here's a pic:
    https://www.tundras.com/threads/are-camper-top.86396/#post-2179334

I know for a fact FGV posted pics of his within the last 3-4 weeks. Just can't find. And here's his comment saying "DC cap on AC and you'll have leaks": https://www.tundras.com/threads/camper-shell-access-cab-vs-crew-cab.105214/#post-2706752

Thanks to all for the info. Very helpful!

What I've absorbed is that the AC bed is a tad longer than the DC so an AC topper on a DC might hang over a bit, but how much may depend on the brand of the topper. The picture on the for-sale listing says its FEDCO on its back hatch but my searches find a CT company that's now defunct.

It's less than 45 minutes away, so I'll just drive over tomorrow and try it on for size. If I can live with the overhang, I'll probably pull the trigger and live with it since DC toppers seem to be pretty rare.

Next question, which may be worthy of a separate thread (if so, let me know)...

The topper has a split front window that opens a bit in the middle toward both sides, maybe 2 feet total. My truck's rear window is electric and opens all the way across and as far down as I want it to. I'll put that to use at times with long fishing rods, one being a one-piece rod about 12' in length. I'd like to be able to weather-seal around the windows to cut down the wind noise while driving and keep the rain out if I can't close both windows.

On my old F-150, the cab and topper windows were of a similar size and nature and I found a clear plastic inflatable TrukBoot that was just the right size and worked perfectly. I am not above engineering something out of pool noodles or pipe insulation to accomplish what I need, but is there any sort of more elegant solution?

Thanks again for all your help!

I think this is a great thread to revive now that we're looking at shell camping season... and i'll piggyback a question on it.

It's mostly about getting the perfect fitment with shells. My question is do we have to remove our bed rail frames for the perfect overhang for some camper shells? When I purchased mine, the person that I bought it from had the same AC size as mine, but the bed rails were still on his truck.

I see some that some fit perfect at just the right angle over the bed. But like on mine it really looks like it would benefit by the rails being removed.

    Mine (the white shell)...

Guessing that bed rails are off on these (these aren't mine the grey shell ones)...

I was reading the other day that once the bed rail covers/liners come off you basically can't put them back on because the clips get destroyed in the process. Does anyone have a solution for either recycling/using the rails again every year, or do people just take them off and forget about them?

I've found the opposite in my area. Nothing but DC caps. I almost never see AC caps, anywhere.

I've had both rails off twice now, with no damage. I had to take them off to properly compound and polish the haze out of my paint. I actually pulled the driver side off 3 times in total. No damage. Popped right back on.

Work slowly. Both times I removed mine, I started at the tailgate end, popping from the bed corner. If I remember, I pulled horizontally toward the tailgate while pulling up.

Not trying to be a naysayer on both of y'all, but what you've each posted is totally the opposite of what I've personally experienced

This might qualify as the most intriguing - or possibly most bizarre - 1st post I've ever seen. Kudos.

I've got an AC shell on my DC. The rear cab profile on the AC is ever so slightly more square in the rear which means putting the AC shell on my DC leaves a slightly wider gap at the top that narrows as it comes down and doesn't quite match the line from where the bed meets the cab. This is purely aesthetic though and you really don't notice unless you're looking for it.

There was a little gap under the rear hatch that was letting a little bit of dust in when I would be out on dusty roads but I stuck a small piece of window weather stripping you can buy at any hardware store under the bottom of the hatch and that sealed it right up.

I think that shell looks great on your truck. I have a double cab shell on my access cab. Proof we can swing both ways. :anonymous:

Yeah, but once you see the gap or overhang, you just can't unsee it. It would really rustle my OCD jimmies.

I guess the real question is more why did 'Yota make the DC beds ever so slightly different to the AC beds to its detriment 15-20 years later when we're still looking for precise fit shells?

Couldn't they have just the bed sizes exactly the same it to the same length since the width was the same? What was the advantage of adding like 1-2" of length to the bed?

You cut a hole in the top so it can be loaded like a real truck? Or pull it off for the truck to be useful again?

You still haven’t given an adult explanation for what a “paw cap” is. If you don’t want to participate nicely in class, there’s the corner and a dunce cap.
