After I decided to give up on trying to install a new sound system, I replaced the battery connection and tried to start.
It won't start, turns over but there is a red light on by the clock on the dash. It's the shape of a vehicle with a key in the middle.
    Help!

That's your anti-theft immobilizer. I wonder if it forgot your key? Have another key to try?

My guess is the truck's security system isn't recognizing the key.

Dammit, @19TurdPro beat me to it

Check your starter relay, and ground cable.. ensure both sides have good clean contacts and are tight.... have your battery tested... if you changed the connectors there is a slight possibility that something is not properly tightened down, double check your work and grounds...

You can try to disconnect the battery again to reset the computer but it does look like the computer forgot your key. This may involve going to your Toyota dealer to have them fix.

I bought two spare keys off Amazon because I only had one. I had the local hardware store cut them for me. They did it for free since they had no way of programming the key so they didn't offer it. Before I left I tried both of them. For giggles I tried to start the truck and it did the exact same thing. It just turned over but wouldn't start. I used TechStream to program them but I had to have a working key to do it if I remember correctly. If you have a copy of TechStream you could try it. But I'm guessing for security reasons only the dealer would have a way to get around not having any keys working. Maybe they can cut a key based on the S/N and program it to match the original key's chip.

You definitely need a working key, if not a Master key to program/register new chip using Techstream. I've done adding new key using Techstream on our 2010 rav4 with immobilizer.

    Email from dealership:.

The tech started to determine why you had a no crank on your Tundra. Ritchie reports a error code of B279A (theft dererrent system communication line high fixation. He also found a open in the remote start harness. Harness ordered & tech determine more diag & damage possible. There is sign of a mice nest, foam protector chewed, mice droppings with wires damage. The tech is recommending to remove the dash & evaporator box to determine what connection or part has failed. Labor to start is 10.2 @ the labor rate of $140.00 ($1428.00) . Parts needed-that could be effected are Engine ECU ($1019.47), Transponder ECU ($380.00) and the Dah’s harness (2156.00). Tech states unable to determine a fix until the dash is removed. Insurance will need to be involved.

Holy bucket of worms. That is not what i expected for a simple trip to the dealer for a key programming.
Were you able to see the actual mice nest or anything like what they stated?
I just felt the major headache you probably are having right now, just from reading all that.

Best of luck. O hope they will take care of it so you can have your truck back in better condition. In a way this radio adventure kind of put you ahead of what could be way worse, like the truck get caught on fire with the exposed wiring. Right?
I dont know, just trying to see the 'brighter' side of the situation.

Yes, that is true. It could have left me stranded some place besides my driveway. It could be worse. I have full coverage so hopefully this will work out.
Thanks for your help and words. I appreciate it.

As a former Tech myself i can guarantee you competent Techs who work flat rate only receive a small percentage of that money, no-matter how talented they are. The rates dealerships charge are completely ridiculous, but the amount they are willing to share with the guys who butter their bread is the real crime in the end, and one of the reasons i decided to leave. My rant for tonight. :goingcrazy:

oh yeah I believe you. One of the reason I go to a small shop with the same tech. I'd rather have him get paid than the dealership.

I only went to the dealership because it was a possible key/security/computer issue and I was hesitant with that.
Otherwise all my stuff goes to a local shop here.

@NCHammy, what was the end result of your situation?

I have a similar situation but I have not done any work on my 2010 tundra and haven't had any issues with it ever.

    (Nov. '23)
    Symptom: Crank, no start
Resolution: Towed truck to Toyota services and they performed Health Check. Came back with DTC B2795 (Key with unregistered key code). They gave me a new key and reprogrammed my existing key. All is good. This resolved my issue.

Asked for explanation how this would happen after almost 10 years of using the same key and they couldn't explain it.

    (Jan. '24)
    Symptom: Same issue....crank, no start.
Resolution: Will need to have truck towed to Toyota again. Not sure what the options are going to be?

The tech also mentioned a potential of 10 hours of labor to remove the dash to troubleshoot this.
