I filled up last week and the next morning the truck did not start during the first attempt. It took three attempts for it to finally crank over. Yesterday, I noticed my CEL/4lo/trac on and when I checked the code bank one and two are both running too rich.

The solution I had last year was to only run high octane and that solved the problem.

Is this normal, or I have to go more in-depth with the diagnostics.

Replaced MAF, Plugs, 02, afm, intake filter. Only happens in during winter running 87 octane.

    TIA

    2012 5.7 FFV

not normal. post up the exact codes. Yes I would also try better gas and see if there is any change, can't hurt!

It looks like you have a 5.7 FFV. I am not an FFV expert (never owned one) but I know that winter gas can sometimes cause the computer to think you're running E85 instead of regular 87 because of sensed alcohol levels. The vapour point is different with the winter blend.

    Recommendations:

    1. Search this site and Google for Tundra FFV cold start.
    2. Clear the codes and bump up to 89 and see if it resolves it.
    3. Take a look at this TSB: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10170730-9999.pdf

Cool thanks! I'm over the mileage too be covered by the TSB warranty. I guess I have to start researching the pars and do it myself. I just need to find a techsteam emulator.

    Thanks again!

Don't jump into the TSB until you try the simple stuff - like 89 octane. It may be cheaper and give you the same result :)

Last year I had to pump 91 octane or octane boost and it did not give me the CEL. The winter fuel is causing throwing the codes during cold starts.

I'll try 89 octanes, it's a few cents cheaper per liter than the 91. $6-8 extra per fill up is definitely better.

You may need to put 91 in if you fill half a tank (the mix makes 89!) but then subsequent fills try 89.

Does the ethanol content confuse the sensor?

Just went through this whole ethanol problem on the truck, been sticking with shell 91 (no ethanol) and so far so good.

Hopefully someone with proper fuel blending / mapping expertise will chime in, but from my understanding the answer is "it depends".

Summer fuel is blended to an ideal vapor point to prevent tank evaporation when it gets warm. Winter fuel is blended so that it vaporizes at a lower temp to assist with cold starting below freezing (increased ethanol can be part of this but it is not a given).

Increased ethanol does change the vapor point which is what the engine is mapped to sense. However, there is more in the fuel blend than ethanol that can impact the vapor point.

And for the record this one of the reasons why I wouldn't buy a FFV Tundra :anonymous:

No, I have not used (e85) with this rig. I did with my '16 Tundra and the fuel savings/economy is just no there, so I want back to running regular gas.

I agree, unfortunately, they Hype on the FFV/E85 was at it's highest during those times. I was kind of disappointed at first that FFV was not available when I bought my 2020, but after remembering there's really no benefit in having an FFV Tundra. Mileage sucks and it did not run as peppy as it was on 87 octane.

I'm doing 19L/100km and it will be jumping up to 21-22L/100 when the the snow starts falling due to warm-ups. I need to see if the Cabin Warmer is still available.

I read somewhere that using high octane fuel is bad for our vehicles. Is this true?
