Why I wouldn't be worried about reliability.

If Toyota wants to create a reliable turbo powerplant, common sense says that you have to reinforce the engine internals to handle the extra boost, so yeah although the engine might be handling more power than a NA would, it's internals are also more stout and thus keeping the overall stress at about the same level.

Toyota are not idiots when it comes to Turbos. The supra 2jz came with 300hp from the Factory but why is it famous? The engine was detuned and could handle quite a bit more than that. I am confident the factory tune on the truck will be conservative and not be massively stressing it out.

But what is the biggest reason? MPG

Everyone wants reliability so that they don't have to spend $5-10k repairing their engine when something goes wrong right?

Well if the new Tundra's Hybrid engine gets 25 combined MPG compared to your average 5.7 combined MPG of 15mpg, after 200,000 miles, you will have saved almost... $15,000.

That's enough money to replace the engine and more every 200,000 miles.

That’s more believable than the new truck getting 25mpg. I’m a 13mpg guy myself.

Considering the F150 ecoboost users report real world numbers around 17-18mpg mixed and 15-16mpg running 33”+ tires - what makes you think Toyota can double the efficiency while adding power?

ETA hybrid battery for a Highlander cost $6k - what do you think the one in the new Tundra will cost?

    18.6 here this summer. That’s on a 6” Lift and 35’s.

I get OPs point however. It’s one way of looking at it for sure

They’re stout motors. The Lexus ls500 has been using this motor with a different tune for more hp that torque. Very few issues have been noted.

it’s also one of the (like #2 behind the 2.5l Toyota sells) most efficient mass produced engines. 37% thermal efficiency is stellar.

The few guys I know with eco boosts are getting 20+ stock and 18+ leveled on 33s. Seeing/hearing all the work Toyota did to improve the aerodynamics, I think it will truly get 20+ real world and even better with the hybrid

Kind of funny reading all of the “I’ve been a Toyota guy since Vietnam” the last 5 years on here and now it’s “well I’m just not sold on Toyota’s V6TT reliability..” despite these motors (or similar) being used in a Lexus for a while now.

I’m at just over 100k mi on my ‘14. As it creeps towards 150k in the next 3-4 years I’ll certainly give a hard look at the CC with a 6.5’ bed on the 1794 trim. So glad they got rid of the NBA basketball orange leather seats in their “flagship” trim level.
Excited to see one of these in person.

I’ve got many years of experience with Toyota hybrids. 4 vehicles/3 different models.

The new Sienna hybrid includes a 10 year 100,000 hybrid battery and powertrain warranty. I imagine the Tunnie will come with the same.

It’s also a pretty common phenomenon for people with Toyota hybrids to beat the EPA estimate. The Sienna is rated at 35mpg (6000lb van!), people regularly report 40+. It’s even a little more extreme in the Prius where people can push the 45-50 EPA up to 60 and beyond.

I suspect that based on Toyota’s history that the Tundra hybrid will be more efficient, more reliable, and much more valuable than competitors’ used hybrids in resale.

Same here. I am anywhere between 11.6-12.3 usually short trips in a stop and go environment.

I get 8mpg towing. This seems to be the magic number when towing from all my gas powered vehicle experience.

Not giving into the hype, if my v8 Tundra dies, I will be rebuilding a classic next or buying one already built.

Thing is people who buy a Sienna or Prius really care about mpg. They drive it like a grandma all the time. The majority of tundra owners don’t do that. And with TT, well I imagine they are going to be on the gas feeling the boost kick in and not worried about mpg.

Yeah, I think you could say that for hybrids in general. Point is just that Toyota hybrids EPA estimated MPG is often pretty spot on.

I am not “worried” about the TT reliability.

I am also not buying one.

Will it save fuel over 10-15 years that equal the cost of a replacement- likely yes.

If it goes bad in year 5 - would I lose having to put 4g in a repair - absolutely.

To me it’s not a question of reliability - rather even if it’s top of the class in reliability - what is the cost of repair to those it fails on ? The failure rate could beat everyone handily and still be 3% a year years 4-5-6…that’s roughly a 1-6 chance that within the life of your car note you are gonna need a big repair that isn’t covered by warranty. Same chances as you have playing Russian Roulette basically.

The current gen 2.5 engine is not without its faults - but in general they are less expensive and more likely to appear in the first 3 years than what history suggest the TTs faults may be.

Besides - the front end is so damn ugly it will keep me away until the refresh and shrink the grille to a normal size.

That’s for sure. All my Jap vehicles get advertised or higher mpg. If I drive them right. Wife has a 2020 Lexus NX 300, 4cyl turbo, and like to get on it to feel the turbo boost. But if I drive it normal is good on mpg.

So owning a hybrid is "a wash"... Haven't heard what it will take to replace one of these hybrid batteries yet or how often.

Supposedly there's more specs and information coming during a future football game. Why they can't just release all of this at once is asinine.

I believe he’s talking about the price of the battery. The battery is $4850.

I bet it is a wash. When hybrids came out, they cost more to own one than the regular counter part because the price was so high it was almost impossible to recoupe the costs. Hybrid are cheaper now but all that electric crap is costly down the road. It’s all fun and games till something breaks out of warranty and that’s how it usually goes. I don’t even want to know the costs involved to replace the electric motor sandwiched between the engine and trans.

I think Toyota knows the numbers aren’t as impressive as people want them to be and are releasing that info yet. Why would you withhold that kind of info with a total redesign and a hybrid. That’s the main selling point of a hybrid. I think they want to hook people with everything else then release the numbers. Have to wait and see the numbers but I don’t see them being anything big.

Just admit it, you would like nothing other than a 454, dual carbs and a positraction rear end along with leather heated/cooled seats and skip all the safety stuff (LKA etc), dynamic cruise.

    I get it. ;)

    {

I hear ya,, I want a 22 Caddy CTSV, manual or an older 2015ish SS. Basically a sedan with the corvette engine and a stick.

Too bad it didn't sell and ultimately went away. I guess we're a dying breed.

In all seriousness, 600 tq in a truck with toyota reliability sounds tits to me.
