Why did you change tires?

Good Morning Everyone and Happy Thursday!

My curiosity is perking today so I have a question for the members.

You just bought a new Tundra and you are thinking about or have upgraded the tires. So my question is, if you bought a BRAND NEW Tundra, what was your reasoning for changing tires? Especially since you got brand new tires on your truck?

My 2017 is over a month old and I just bought a set of Ridge Grapplers. My reasoning was purely cosmetic as the stock tires would have been fine for a few years.

On that note, what is your reason for your trucks new shoes?

i had crapstone duelers.....those things lasted less than 30K miles.

next time i get a new truck, you can bet your bottom dollar i'm getting my own tires, or at the very least, getting the dealer to put on some LT tires in the first place!

A lot of people (including myself) want an LT (Light Truck) tire on a truck not a P (passenger). And looks are always going to be one of the top reasons.

For sure but why do you want an LT tire? I am not hauling or do anything but having my Tundra as my daily driver.

handling is better, ride is better, longer tread life (depending on what brand you get of course). just seems sturdier and better all around.

    1. Because there is a a lot of mud in the world. Usually at boat launch parking lots during duck season.

    2. Same reason I added a winch. Because once in a long while, usually on a Tuesday during duck season when no one I know is within 100 miles, I go somewhere where there is mud.

    3. I learned after Katrina, if you run halfway aggressive tires, you can pull roofing nails out all day long and the air stays in.

    4. When road tripping cross country I love to turn down a dirt road to find out where it goes.

Factory tires are almost always a compromise that try to do all things relatively well, as opposed to being excellent in just a few aspects. Many of us are looking to bend that formula towards how we use our trucks. Whether it be mall crawling, off-roading, bush-urinating, or towing, there is almost always a better aftermarket tire that can help us meet our respective goals.

All that said, the practical side of me cringes at the thought of replacing perfectly good tires. I usually drive the crap out of them dreaming of the day I can justify replacing them, due to wear.

I was of the mind that I should wear out stock tires and then look for an LT tires. After getting BF K02 I wish I got rid of stock tires sooner and got some kinda of credit for them. The truck rides better handles better and looks better with LT's. Now I know why guys trade in there tires right after buying a new truck.

It's a lot easier selling a set of tires with 50 miles on them than 5K.

So funny. Been there and done that, although I had a Fisher Plow hooked up. Makes it that much more difficult to get out. Stock tires are junk, and will be tossed shortly for me.

Agreed. I'm in no-mans land now at 4,900 miles. I want to change tires but know I won't get much of anything either through the tire shop or craigslist.

5K isn't that many miles at all. Craigslist is your best bet. IMO

Hasn't happened yet but I'm going to get rid of the stock Michelin tires next year. My move from Arizona to Oregon will probably put 7k road miles on if I make 3 round trips. These are better tires for that purpose than what I'm going to want after getting settled. To do the exploring, hunting and fishing I'm planning on I will need a much more aggressive tread for mud and snow. I believe the truck will look nicer too.

At least the Michelins are better than crappy Dunlop tires. When I changed my tires at 49000km they were bald on the edges.
Now when I think back they made the truck umbarable to drive.
