I see we have a dog, cat, and even a horse thread like this, but didn't see anything for the less common pets.

So, what non traditional pets do you have? Snakes? Lizards? Amphibians? Spiders, Scorpions, and Centipedes? Let's see 'em!

    ***Disclaimer***
Please only post if you are a responsible pet owner providing the necessary care for these unique and amazing animals! Neglected, poorly cared for animals or those in cages/terrariums too small for them make animal lovers sad, angry, and will wind up getting the thread nuked. Don't be a dick, and definitely don't be a dick to animals!

Now that's out of the way, I don't have any exotic pets, but I had a Red Belly Piranha named Leno for a long long time. He passed many years back, but he was cool. I don't think I have any pictures either, but this is about what he looked like.

His red really flared up after he ate (live worms or goldfish feeders) and as he got older he got darker colored like this pic, though his lower teeth were a little more prominent. Looked terrifying, but he was a 'fraidy cat. Hid when I had to move stuff in his tank or cleaned it. Still always had that anxiety about the kind of damage he could do if he ever bit me.

Had him from the time he was the size of a nickel and he grew to be about 8 1/2 inches. I was a kid and it was a good thing that Piranhas are a really hearty fish. I learned enough having him for nearly a decade (or maybe a touch over?) that I realized an aquarium (or any exotic pet) is a bit too much work for me so I stick to my dog now, but I am glad to have had the experience with such an amazing fish.

I have some tropical fish. No pics right now but maybe when I get home I can snap a few. I have a tortoise in my yard which has been posted before.

One tank has the usual tetras, various shrimp, and a small number of snails including a assassin snail that keeps the population in check. If you want to be freaked out look into how assassin snails eat.
    Screenshot_20220505-095836_Photos.jpg

The other tank has a few cichlids from Africa. This year I'm going to resurrect my old 135 gallon tank and stock it with maybe 60 cichlids (little at a time).
    Screenshot_20220505-095823_Photos.jpg

Over my life I have had lots of weird pets. Geckos, iguanas, a bearded dragon, sand boas, rosey boas, red tail boas, Burmese python, red tail sliders, a box tortoise, various frogs including a few argentine horned frogs, and dozens of lizards I caught in the wild as a kid (which I returned to the wild after a week or so). Most reptiles aren't very exciting to see when they aren't eating, I have always been more of a fish guy.

The coolest exotic pet I think I have had was a Jardini Arowana, he was just over 2" long when I got him and just shy of 2' long when I rehomed him. That fish was like having a dog. Recognized different people, he would show excitement when I walked in. I could even pet him at the surface. I wish I had pictures of him. I raised him on pellet but would occasionally give him insects or mice.

No pics, but my ex-wife still has the Double Yellow-Headed Amazon parrot we bought when we were first married.

"Sydney" is probably around 35 years old now.

She loved my ex, but hated me. I still have these half moon shaped scars on my fingers from being bitten.

Damn, I wish I had pics of my iguana from middle / high school. Loved that little guy. He was about 30'' long.

I'm on nights and figured I'd bump this thread to see if anyone else wants to share their unique pets.

I had a Ball python years ago. Most recently were Geckos. That lasted about a year. Had 2 a creamcicle female and a snow male in different enclosures. Came home one day to the male wedged between his hide and side glass, he always bulled his way around the tank and apparently wedged himself so tightly he couldn't get out and died. Took me 5 sec when I walked thru the door to see him and say wtf. 3 other people in the house never noticed lol. Oddly enough the female about 10' away stopped eating after that and slowly withered away. Refused to eat anything crickets, meal worms. Died a few months later.

Ball Pythons are great pets. I've always liked them, and if I were going to get a snake that'd be my first choice. Sadness about the geckos. :(

Salt water tanks. Super pretty! I love the amazing colors and shapes sea creatures come in. Please, if you have them, share more pics. ^_^

Honestly, I just can't do fish anymore. I don't have the drive or the memory to keep up on tank maintenance, and they deserve better than that. Love aquariums and all the cool fish, but I'm a terrible fish owner. If you decide to get back into it, post up some pics.

Compared to a salt water, yeah regular is easy.

There'll be room if you make it.
