    I have a hard time waiting until 4/32 to swap tires. I usually start looking at 7-8/32. I should ride them out and get my money out of them but it’s tough.
    I’m running KO2 and they are sitting at 8/32 or so but last winter they really seemed to lose traction.
    Anyone else dump tires this early?

    Here in Canada we have 6 months of winter it feels like, because I want good traction for the winter months i start looking for new tires when I get to 10/32. If we didn’t get snow than I would run them even lower.

    My tires are about shot and riding like sh#t, trying to hold off as long as possible with winter approaching. I always like having fresh rubber right before snow season.

    I can't seem to keep tires long enough to wear down that much. Seems like something always happens and I have to replace them early.

    Running tires to the very last 32nd of an inch, IMHO, is not a very good idea. All you have between your 5-6k truck and the ditch or another vehicle is those 4 tires. I want to know they are going to grip when I need them to. Believe me, I know how expensive tires are, but my life, and the truck are worth a WHOLE lot more. That being said, I run two sets of tires. One for summer, and one for winter. Generally, good winter tires are more expensive than regular summer tires, so I don't see the sense in running a lot of rubber off them in the summer.

    Function before sparkle.
    Over the years I have become more and more like this. I value traction in the winter and am willing to invest in new tires to get it, especially since with this truck I don't run dedicated winter tires.

    I will go down to 4-5/32nds when tires can be warrantied for mileage...sometimes. If going into winter, hell no. It’s embarrassing leaving vehicles down at my gate and walking in.

    I couldn’t agree more. Many years ago I had a set of BFG AT/KOs on an old fullsize Ford Bronco I used to own. The tires were getting old, but even with about 50K miles on them they still had good tread. The problem was that they were just old, at least 5 years old. Sure enough, the sidewalls separated on two of them. Luckily, no blowout occurred while on the highway, but it could’ve been bad. I quickly replaced them with fresh new tires and learned my lesson.

    The snow and ice is a big deciding factor for me. Last winter with around 9/32 of even wear on my KO2, I saw a significant reduction in snow traction.

    I run em till about 50% then sell em used to someone to share the love. Haven’t had an issue selling a used tire my whole life. From bmx’s to goats.

    I usually run them down to wear bars or 4/32. I'm kinda OCD about having the right tire pressure and aligned so I always keep an eye on them. On the last set of tires on my wife's car, we actually got more mileage than the advertised mileage warranty. Needless to say we bought the same tires again.

    When I lived up north I would typically hold off until late fall to get new tires due to the snow. Now that I'm in Alabama, I'm going to run them until the cords are showing.

    I get between $400-500 typically if in great shape. Folks around here are pretty leery of used rubber. So half worn or more I’d suspect less.

    I go to 4/32 normally. I went ahead and replaced my last set around 6-7/32nd because I was buying another car and didn’t want to deal with brakes or tires on the Tundra for a few years. Replacing everything on my 5 year old Challenger RT early next year due to wear and then on the Tundra towards the end of the year because they’ll be approaching 6 years old, although they may not even be down to 6/32nd yet by that point.

    I always run aggressive all terrains on the Crewmax so I feel I can get away with 4-5 32nd inch but passenger car tires seem to become useless in inclement weather once you get to that point.

    My wifes 4runner had Terra Grapplers on it since new in 2016.

    This Summer it just turned 65k miles and the tires still had some tread left... maybe 3/32 or so and probably could have gone another season... but I just felt better putting new tires under her. There is also some value in having the additional peace of mind, knowing the fresh tires are safer in the rain than the ones with 65k on them.

    Here's another reason to replace tires early...:stirthepot:

    it "saves" miles on your truck. Your speedo is calibrated for the OEM tire size with full tread. When you drive on worn tires, the diameter of the tire could be as much as an inch less than when they were new. I don't know the OEM tire size on a Tundra, but say it's 32". 1/32 is about 2.5%. So every 100 miles you drive with 4/32" tread vs. new tires your odometer thinks you drove about 103.

    The counter-argument to this is that worn tires are lighter than new, and so your gas mileage probably improves slightly the more worn your tires get. But, we all drive Tundras, so it's a given that we just give the middle finger to MPGs. That's why there are no gas mileage threads on this site :boink:

    I used to sell tires, in another life, and learned a simple truth about so-called all-season tires. When new, they gain extra traction on snow/ice because of the stippling (multiple small tread cuts on surface) which increases contact grip. But, once that surface stippling is worn off, they are no better that standard highway tires on snow/ice. So, after about 3/4 32nds of wear, you have normal summer tires, and the all-season traction is virtually gone.

    Well I seem to run oversized tires, and they kind of seem to sell them selves. Someone needs to mock something up while building a truck or they want to run em bald on a work truck etc. I usually get $200-500 depending on size and wear. I’ve sold badly worn (gravel logging roads) work truck tires with zero lug edge left due to gravel wear for $100. Keep in mind this is all Canadian currency. (A new set of rubber standard size is roughly $2000 cad)
