I’m going to get out of the military (reserves) in a couple years. I’m thinking about joining our county SAR team before or after I get out.

Just curious, any of y’all use your rigs for SAR? Any special gear you’ve added to be able to do so? Any issues getting insurance on it for such purposes, or does the county underwrite you anytime you use it for SAR?

    Photos?

Before cell phones I served many years in the Coast Guard Aux and performed countless search and rescues. My rig was my 29’ Sea Bird, the original version of the Phoenix which served me well. Not exactly what you were asking but I throughly enjoyed the experience. Nothing like seeing the faces of the family as you bring their loved ones home.

Thanks for serving with us, Shipmate! Our Aux doesn’t get all the due credit it deserves.

I don't do SAR, but I think if you are really serious and dedicated then you should find and start training a pup maybe even two. Not EZ to top the ability of a well trained hound.

Done some but not in my personal truck. I do keep a SAR pack that covers the basics on medical and nav and "survival".

I volunteered in the Coast Guard Auxiliary as well. Ended up as a Branch Chief (BC-ATM) on the National Staff. Also served as a public affairs officer for C.G. District 13 Operations at Pier 36 in Seattle. Went on a few nighttime patrols, two drug interceptions (one fast boat, one helicopter), two weeks on an ice breaker, wrote a few newspaper articles, and hosted several press conferences. Enjoyed the whole Auxiliary experience, but too far away from any larger body of water to continue with it now.

My suggestion would be to get with your local SAR team and get their advice. They would be able to provide you with more specific information than any general ideas we could provide here. They also have a better understanding of their specific needs.

    Definitely join up!

Self recovery and offroad capability are obvious, in addition to my SAR pack I keep a basic rope rescue kit as well. But nothing special just for SAR.

Not sure on insurance, but I do know that on mutual aid agreements or memorandums of understanding, they almost all say "you're on your own" with tangible goods.

@loam_roamer on Instagram and YouTube does use his Tundra for SAR. El Dorado or Placer County can’t remember which. You can watch some of his videos or DM him. He’s not on Tundras but would be a good resource for you.

Hey everyone! Just found this thread through a Google Search. I use my 2012 for SAR along with special events we participate in. Great rig for the job given I can deploy teams into the field, run COMMs operations, and do vehicle based searches. The reality is most of the trails we run for SAR are typically forest roads and random trails. No rock crawling for SAR at least here in PNW.
