pretty much, mine was at all speeds too really was just kinda there regardless of throttle or speed. The only time i really heard it though was at lower speeds cause the hum of my ATs covered it lol

Starts really noticably at 77. 80 it is howling pretty well and I really dont push it much past that. Lower speeds not so bad but also have no load in the bed. 24 SR5 TRD Sport built 12/23

    So uh,
Service advisor says i need a new turbo on the driver side? Wtf lol i think i can tell the difference between the howling noise i was hearing and turbo whistle. Do i let them replace a turbo? Seems like totally not the correct fix. I was not having any power loss or other turbo related issues.

Edit: im considering getting a second opinion on it, just seems completely off the mark for the symptoms.

I would definitely get a second opinion, but not from Toyota, take it to a local mechanic

just dropped it off at another nearby dealer, only reason they took me so soon was cause i told them exactly what was up. the 2nd dealer is my usual service spot of choice, but i have had some bad experiences there with my previous vehicle so i was trying out one that is used less by me but is technically closer to my house....:bananadead:

    Update here:

The 2nd dealer called me today their, tech drove it 4 times and is diagnosing it as a bad rear differential. Due to my first diagnosis, they are getting toyota involved and they are sending some regional tech out to look at it.

I believe it’s drivetrain related, not turbo. It changes with speed not RPM. Interestingly enough, pretty consistent speeds for all of us. Just out of curiosity has anyone experienced this with a 2wd tundra?

no I don’t but I do have a tonneau cover and a bed mat. I can still hear mine with my cover flipped up. I could see how a shell would amplify it tho.

I'm not a mechanic, nor am I an engineer. However, my life experience tells me that this whining noise stems from improper backlash in the differential. When excessive backlash exists, it causes noise from the improper meshing of the gear sets. If backlash is indeed the problem, and if a given manufacturing facility is building to the wrong specification, then this type of wide-spread situation develops. (It then is referred to as "normal" because it occurs in all differentials built to an improper specification!) Solution depends on Toyota engineers doing an engineering analysis/post-mortem on the failed parts, compare observed settings to prescribed specifications and take appropriate steps from there. Just my opinion.

@Kap1--Thanks for pointing me to this area of concern. Keep us posted regarding your situation/resolution.

If it’s the same howl as the 3rd gen Tacomas then Toyota will install some foam in the C pillars and and some metal cups to the back body mounts to help quiet it some. Only for certain models though. The rest of us were told it’s normal ha

Well... I have a camper shell. Camper shell amplifies all noises from under the truck as it creates a channel between the truck cab and the bed... So I can hear all mechanical noises from under the truck more.

When I took off camper shell, noise was almost not noticeable from inside of the cab, so dealer shop Forman told me to " have a nice day" as my camper shell is at fault...

Sorry, not a mechanic myself so can't add anything else to your hypothesis

this makes me wonder if I should go back and buy an extended warranty, it seems to happen on and off, and can happen way into the future.

Warranty won't help you for the diffential issue.

It's one battle to even get the dealership to replace your differential, and then a new one may make more noise than the old one... And they'll call it as normal

I think I must have a different issue than the one described in this thread. Mine was definitely the rear diff and I haven’t experienced the loud whine since it was replaced. Or maybe the tech that changed mine installed it better than others? I don’t know. But that is the main reason I sent for the extended warranty in addition to the other issues documented on this forum.

So last week I took mine in before the 36k is up. I had the same whine as all of you they replaced the diff and it’s quite now. I will say I’m 2 hours round trip from the dealer so out of convince I try to resolve things my self. I did change the diff fluid with amsoil severe gear and no change. Also the fluid and magnet was were perfect no shavings and fluid was clean, it was just noisy.

This phenomenon makes me think that the Toyota engineering is not at fault, although the tolerance probably too tight, so it poses challenge on the manufacturing and assembling steps to catch up, any slight deviation could crease noise. Problem is it's still a hit and miss with the new one installed, how would you even know ahead of time...

Picked up the truck after about 10 days between 2 dealers. New diff is in and its silent as a church mouse. Extremely happy. Attached my service ticket for yall.

Same as mine. Same parts replaced. 500+ miles and still quiet.

UPDATE: Well, it's June and time for a check up on the diff. Had the same Master Mechanic change the diff fluid who replaced my truck's differential. Wanted him to do the inspect and change since he knew what the previous mess looked like. Happy to report no discoloration or issues. All is well and since replacing my tires with Michelin, she's very quiet and smooth. Had my first oil and filter change today too. 2,507 miles.

@Kap1 Sounds like Toyota has a supplier that has a quality control problem in their manufacturing/assembly plant. Sorry you had the misfortune to get caught in that. And now the frustration of dealing with a dealer that is going to be reluctant to accept that as a problem the second time around. Good luck in your venture!

Interesting update. Still silent, but never seen this mpg around town. Not sure how big a factor a diff could be but thats my best around town mpg by a long shot in 8500 miles.

@RallySauce --Hmmm. Do you think they put a different ratio in? Just kidding, but it is unusual to see an increase like that.

Same issue. 2024 SR5 TRD Off Road. Noise at 75 and above under acceleration. Truck has only 1400 miles on it. Dealer already replaced one diff after confirming metal in the fluid and noise now starts closer to 80mph but is still present and just as loud. Truck is going back next week. Toyota really need to figure this out. My buddy has a late 2023 Limited and it’s having same exact issues. Coworker has a 2024 Platinum and his is quite so not great odds. I don’t want to keep replacing diffs but I also don’t want to do a surprise 180 on a highway if/when it locks up.

Well, just got a call back from my service department. At first, they tried telling me it was the tires. I referenced this thread, and after asking them to check the differential/differential oil, it looks like there’s metal shavings in mine. Having the differential replaced under warranty. Seems like this is a pretty widespread issue. I would advise all 3rd gen owners to listen for the drone/hum at 70-75 mph under acceleration. Toyota needs to do better here.

Glad to find this thread. I got my 23 platinum 2 months ago and I thought the humming sound was normal. Today I went for a 2 hour drive and can't take the irritating sound anymore and googled it. I will schedule for a service tomorrow and reference this thread. I got 13k miles, is this diff replacement covered by Toyota warranty? Thanks.
