You can pick any engine t-case/tranny.... You're goal is maximum fuel efficiency, towing torque and off road dependability...

    The chassis, Toyota t100...

    What do you pick?

I like the Toyota brand for dependability, but I am not attached to it unless there is a way to get solid mpg's... A light weight mill would be nice but I have no idea what good options exist. Gas diesel whatever.... What do you pick and why?

2000: Bilstein 5100's 16x8 589's with 265/75/16 and 1.25" spacers Flowmaster 50 series over the axle dump Pioneer touchscreen with backup camera Full interior and dash LED conversion Trailer brake controller with 7 pin Bedliner coat bumpers & trim ARE topper 2019: ARE topper with full Bedrug kit and Vortex rack TRD shifter 1.25" wheel spacers (I like to live dangerously) Red tow hooks for that +15 grip bonus
Maximum MPG? good luck with gas. That contradicts the maximum torque requirement. An engine cannot be tuned to be good at both. Torque is a product of energy production, gotta burn gas to make torque. Sounds like you've got a diesel in your future. They are more efficient in that regard, but typically heavier. And the fuel is more expensive, negating some of the advantage of efficiency. But gobs of torque. Maybe a 4cyl deisel with a 5 speed trans with OD. Hilux mill, D-4D is a great one, although likely not widely available. Not sure you can even get one and use it legally stateside. It's a dreamer's option really. Your real options are the factory available V6, and maybe some sort of 2.7L 4 banger swap with manual. Neither will give you great MPG. Neither will give you great towing torque.

Ya... I know it’s a tall and stooopid order for sure.
This is way, way different than any of the other hot rod builds I’ve done.. none of them were built to be DD’s.
My hunch is 22 mpg when not towing shouldn’t be impossible with the correct mill properly OD’d.
I’ve just never rodded for efficiency...
My bet….? That it’ll take a long time to figure out the best combo, and that tall skinny tires are in my future...
In the end I want this to be the last truck a acquire, so I want to get it right... lm budgeting 25k

The very best thing you can do for gas mileage is --------------- drop the price of gasoline. At some point it becomes of supreme indifference.

honestly, your best bet is probably a 4BT swap and turn it up a bit. there's a guy who did that to an old dent side F250 and he said he average low 20s in fuel economy.

You could look at an old Chevy 350 swap . With the right transmission and the weight of the little T100 you’d barely break idle getting it to move .
