Wheel width question

    I'm thinking about putting some 285/70/17s on my stock 17 "wheels, which I read are 7.5" wide. This website 1010 tires is saying that for a 285 tire, you want between 7.5" and 9" wide wheels.

    Any real downside to being on the low end/minimum of that range? I know Ill have a bit more sidewall budge (that's fine), but any noticable decrease in mpg, tire lifespan, etc.?

    No, not really. You'll want to make sure you can clear your upper arm with a tire that wide though. The only problem with stock wheels is that aggressive backspacing they have. You want 4.5" or less backspacing to clear 285 tires, 4" is optimal.

    I see. Thanks for the info.

    I'm wondering, couldn't I easily measure just how much tire I can fit?


    E.g., I have 265s now, so moving to a 285 would decrease my tire-UCA clearance by 10mm. I can go measure that clearance and if it's more than, let's say 15mm (adding a 1.5 fudge factor), then I should probably be fine running 285s. Does that make sense?

    I'll get that measurement in the morning... And might have the tires tomorrow evening. I'll update soon

    Is your truck lifted at all? I know we are getting into if the tires fit your truck now, they will fit your rims fine.

    The problem with trying to measure is that the extra 10mm is at the tread (really 5mm per side if you think from the center out). There is no available measurement for how wide the sidewall will buldge, every tire flexes differently. You might easily have an extra inch of sidewall buldge on top of the 5mm. The sidewall is what could contact your uoper arm.

    It's just leveled.

    Since I'd be increasing the tire width by 20mm, it would be 10mm less clearance btwn tread and UCA. But yeah, as you said, I'm not sure how much then bulge will be. I threw in the 1.5 fudge factor to account for that, but maybe an extra 5mm is too conservative an estimate.

    Just went to measure it, not looking good lol


    It's not a good measurement; it's hard to get in there. Might have been easier with a good ol tape measure. Regardless, I think it shows that I'm gonna have trouble with much more tire width.

    The guys at 4WP have a set of wheels they can get me at a discount that have 4.75" backspacing, and they seem to think that everything would fit. I'm not so confident, but could always just ask to try it out and see how it goes. Do you think it's even worth it, or are you positive it wouldn't work with any more than 4.5" of backspacing?

    4.75 backspacing and a 285 tire will hit frame when you turn and will very likely hit upper arm.

    I would look for 4" backspace with a 8" wide wheel or 4.5" backspace and a 9" wide wheel. I used to run 16x9 with 4.5 and it stuck out, would have been about flush if I had stock flares.

    My truck has 16x8 with 4.5 backspace and 285 tires (no flares)
