Couldnt find a thread on exactly what I have going on!

So I just installed a 2.5inch leveling kit on my Tundra. Had it aligned and even had the front tires balanced by les schwab because i had to deflate the tires to get them back on my truck (didnt have a jack big enough). However I am having a little bit of steering wheel shake above 55mph. Nothing that bad but enough that it’s annoying. I also seems to wander just a bit which may be road conditions in my area but the wheel shake didnt do this before the leveling kit.

    Any ideas?

I didnt install a diff drop but I find it hard to believe that would be the issue

I called Toyota and they suggested a road force balance and maybe one of my tires has a slipped belt or a wheel is bent.

For starters you really don’t need to have your wheels rebalanced just because you deflated them. That could be your problem right there. Maybe they were fine until they rebalanced them. Try moving tires around on the truck. Bring the front to the rear and see if the shake continues or changes. Also alignment can possibly be set up wrong giving you the issues with the drift. Another thing to check would be tire pressures.

If they are the same wheels and tires you had prior to the leveling kit I doubt it's a bent wheel. Usually shakes at highway speed like that are tire balance. I would either have them rebalance the tires or look for a place with road force balancing capabilities. If you don't know who does that local to you...enter your zip in the link below.

The wandering issue would be an alignment issue. If you could post up your alignment specs one of the gurus here would be able to help you with that.

I think i’ll start by moving the tires front to back.

Are you saying the lack of a diff drop can cause the wheel shake? The reason I chose not to is because the TRD mode comes with a 2in factory level and no diff drop.

yeah, wandering is the alignment. Was the balance really needed? or did they do that "just because" As above, you can swap front to back and see if it changes the vibration, if not, look at the diff drop. It's pretty simple.

The pro (I think that is what you were trying to say) has the same Diff mounting as non pro models, so you're still facing the same axle angle challenge eventually. Did you measure 2.5 increase? or was that advertised? I've heard 2.5 advertised equals almost 3 in a lot of situations.

It was advertized as 2in but it measures just under 2-1/2inch

I have read a few times where some folks don’t think that the diff drop is necessary. Some even claimed that it can tilt your transfer case in such a way that the oil isn’t properly lubricating it.

I crawled under there yesterday to see if any suspension parts were loose but coulndt find anything.

They did a wheel balance just because.
I did notice one of the weights was not exactly secure (probalby could peel it off with one finger) maybe i’ve lost a few weights already.

I’ve read that as well and my angles don”t look bad at all.

Had the wheels rotated and have felt no difference, also had them road force balance and still am having some steering wheel shimmy. Maybe a little better but not as smooth as before. Anyone know about my alignment specs? Camber may seem a little high from what i’ve read.l

Ya should have learned my lesson there the last few times the couldnt do things right.

Would my camber cause the wheel shake?
I assume that the alignment would be the culprit for the wandering but not the steering wheel shake.

I think i’ll have the dealership align it again

I think you need to get underneath the truck and make sure they got everything tight after the lift and alignment. I’ve seen it too many times.

Here are the factory Toyota instructions for a pro lift. It has all the torque specs for all the nuts bolts and cam alignment tabs. I suggest checking them all.

If the camber is off from side to side it will prob cause a shimmy going down the road but if they are equal it shouldnt. Im th in king balance is your problem. However .07 is not good. You will wear out your tires long before you would like. Going up on tundras you will run out of camber adjustment quick. You might look into getting a set of adjustable uca's, cry now but you sill save down the road replacing tires, as you know they are not cheap...

They said that 0.7 was “within spec” but they also never said they had a hard time aligning so maybe they just aren’t doing it well enough.

    Honestly,
I want tires with more tread anyways so if i can get rid of the wobble i’ll just drive it till the tires are done and then do tires, UCA’s and probably a better leveling solution. Like toytec leveling coilovers.

It’s going to the dealer tomorrow, for them to balance them. If not then i’ll have them check the alignment.

I’ll post an update on what happens

Ok i’ll just have the dealer fix the alignment as well.

I’ll update tomorrow hopefully with good news.

Well I went back to Schwab since they would re do the alignment for free. After arguing with the guy that I wanted less Camber he finally agreed to do it my way not his. Anyways still not quite perfect but better.

Then I had Toyota balance and rotate the tires and drove a short stretch of highway and it seems to be fixed!

We’ll see how it goes in the next month or so.

I will absolutly have Toyota or someone else do the alignment next time.
