I owned an 04 Dakota for a few years I bought new 20 years ago. There was a long running problem of front tires buckling under trucks although I don't remember any at highway speed. It was actually caused by crap ball joints the company fought off acknowledging for several years before finally doing a recall. I remember one spokesman really screwing up badly and having to be cleaned up after when he said the company did not consider it a safety issue because it only happened at parking lot speeds so far. Oh And if owners didn't want catastrophic ball joint failure on their low mileage trucks they should check them more often. At least one guy went to a dealer for out slightly of warranty replacement of a snapped joint and they tried to bribe him with a Goodwill post warranty repair if he kept quiet, but he took his broken truck to Dateline NBC instead.

Went over with the customer base like a fart in church. I did not even remotely contemplate a Dodge or Chrysler branded vehicle again for 12 years years and multiple changes in company ownership just because of that. Finally put it behind me when I got my Challenger RT in 2016 after watching them field tested for 8 years. Did not allow a Ram on the "potential" list for truck duty until last year, 3 purchases later.

I was going to say that's why you don't use spacers.

I’d argue a good spacer checked regularly lol I run a spacer on the rear.

The vid wouldn't play for me, but I got the idea of what went down from the pics.
Kinda sucks that another driver had to pay the price for someone else's stupidity. I was kinda hoping it was the jackass in the bro dozer that flipped.

The chevy driver is a moron. The rotor, and therefore the hub flange are still attached to the wheel. Meaning the wheel bearing or the bolts holding it to the spindle failed, and that went on for long enough for the brake caliper bracket bolts to give out. You could try telling me there was no significant warning signs, but I wouldn’t believe you.

I jumped on the laptop and it worked.
    Yeah, pretty nuts.
Goes to show how much structural engineering goes into modern cars.
There was no warning either. Wheel popped off immediately in front of the car. Imagine what would be going through your head if you're doing 60 down the freeway one second and the next, you're nose up, 15' in the air.
I'd be pissed if that was my morning commute and spilled my entire cup of coffee before I barely had a sip.

Man I just replaced my mom's hub, ball joint and bearing as a complete package. She had been riding on it for atleast 3 years on a daily commute to L.A. My brother, a mechanic, didn't even bother to do anything about it, so I was like f. that.. This is exactly what I told my mom would happen, so I torqued the bolts on 3 different days to make sure I wasn't too tired, or weak to tighten them down....

My question is, wouldn't that hub be bolted to the axle? but from a picture it looks like the rotor came clean off with the wheel. It leaves me with so many questions.

You don't use a torque wrench for that?

Yes, I do... torqued on 3 different days, cuz a 2 hour job turned to a 6 hour ordeal of frustration. Took a cool off day, cuz I was pretty mad. lol.. May have thrown a tantrum, when I stripped that ball joint and had to replace it... lol
