I've always used the Castrol high mileage synthetic blend - anyone have opinions on other oils? I figure it's worked great so far up to 280k miles so I have never switched. I just started purchasing stuff from Rockauto's website and see they don't carry Castrol oil, was thinking of switching to a high mileage synthetic so I could buy from them instead of Walmart/Amazon. Thanks!

As you should know, ‘what brand of oil’ is a loaded question in the car world, that being said:
I run full synthetic Mobile 1 in my Tundra (whatever weight the season demands per the manual), seemed to be well regarded around here, it’s readily available often on sale and never given me any trouble.
I’ve always run Castrol in my BMW’s, that seemed to be the consensus with that crowd, never had any issues with it in that application.
In my Honda CBR I run Amsoil, again, just what was recommended by that crowd and has been just fine.

Motor oil in the engine. Gear oil in the diffs and transfer case. I’m an all synthetic guy, cause science. Appropriate weight is used, brand is semi-irrelevant with recommended intervals followed.

I’ll admit, I’ve just been a total sheep with it and going with the heard, a lot of people have spent a lot of time on the subject and that works for me.

Whatever you can get a good deal on with the proper weight. Oil change intervals are what’s important(along with a decent filter)

I use whatever full synthetic high mileage oil I can find and a TOYOTA Filter. I also change my oil at every 3K. It's a little premature but I feel better changing it at that interval.

I don't think I've seen Kirkland's brand, I'll have to check. I have used Amazon Basic full synthetic high mileage oil. Great Price.

Ok question - the Kirkland brand Full synthetic 5w-30 doesn't specify "for high mileage vehicles" the way I see that Mobile 1 and Valvoline and castrol do. I'm guessing this is just marketing? and Kirkland full synthetic should be fine? Thanks!

I just paid $24.00 for a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w-30 from wallyworld.com. Came in less than 24 hours, no shipping charge, just a couple of bucks more for tax. Toyota filter and a new Toyota gasket for the drain plug.

I take the 55 gal drum of used oil from my local Valvoline and pass it through coffee filters so I can reuse it in my truck.

Oh geez. Here we go again. Isn't there a rule against politics and religion?! Because I think this thread falls into both.

(FWIW I use Mobil 1 synthetic, 'extended performance' or 'ext performance high mileage' and OEM filters which are proven to stomp the shit out of aftermarket filters)

Until you forget there’s more than a gallon in there and have to swap containers. I can count on two hands how many times I’ve done that.

    Working :(

Big data transfer at work I'm babysitting. And I had to install some ceiling access panels in the garage. And chauffer one of the kids around. And the parents are in town. And the other kid had a soccer game. And there was a neighborhood get-together. That's about half of it....

About 10-15 years ago oil formulation changed. The older SJ, SL class oil gave way to SM and then to SN. These oils have less friction reducing additives in the oil because current engines all have roller lifter/follower camshafts. Auto manufacturers are trying to wring as much mpg’s as possible these days.
Older flat tappet camshaft/lifter designs run the risk of premature wear using SM,SN API classified oil. There are many brands of “high zinc, high ZDDP” oil out there but is fairly expensive. Since the 4.7L engine used lifter buckets with flat discs, it might be safe to assume it could be at risk as well. This prompted my switch to high zinc/ZDDP oil such as Valvoline VR1 racing oil. Unfortunately it’s not available in 5w30 so I use 10w30 since I currently have 165k on the engine anyway and the clearances have probably opened up a bit. I also use a genuine Toyota oil filter.
My background is a former automotive machine shop owner, engine rebuilder, and then as an engine parts distribution warehouse sales rep.
