No not at all. I was under the impression that it was basically synthetic oils only in the Gen 3's? Maybe wrong. It's just that I have a Gen 3 truck and was curious.

I began running mobile 1 synthetic in in my 2001 taco.
Synthetic is better than dyno oil 2 to 1.
It's good to start with synthetic on a brand new truck and keep it that way.
Even if you have been running dyno oil for 200,000m it's still better for your engine to begin using synthetic oil.
It's more expensive than dyno oil but worth it unless you're not planning to keep your vehicle very long.

I'm using whatever the dealer puts in it but once the freebie oil changes are over, it will be Mobil 1 extended performance with a TRD oil filter or the Mobil 1 oil filter. Also, I am gonna start pulling oil samples at the oil change interval to get an idea how long I should run my oil.

I ran Castrol synthetic in my Taco and that is what I plan to run in the Tundra. That is unless I find Mobil 1 on sale.

Royal purple and Toyota OEM Filter in my 2008 tacoma for the past 4 years. Previous to that was Mobil one synthetic.

I suppose once the freebies are up on the tundra, it will be royal purple and OEM filter as well...

0-20 in the Auto Value (local parts chain) branded bottle. It's produced by Valvoline at roughly half the cost of the recommended Mobil 1.

    That's not necessarily true.

Some manufacturers, and even engine remanufacturers recommend break in on traditional oil with a zinc additive for the first two oil changes. Some recommend a blend of synthetic and traditional oil and a zinc additive for the first two oil changes. After that do what makes sense for your climate and intended usage.

Main reason is higher oil consumption during break in with synthetic because the rings don't seat. I've heard of this on vehicles up to 10,000 miles before the oil consumption slowed or stopped.

Maybe you know and trust your shop, and there are some excellent ones out there, but I've worked in and dealt with many shops and dealerships. I've seen lots of guys come and go in and out of this trade. You can't always rely on them following recommendations, even when you request a specific oil. Sometimes the requested info doesn't get passed along and often the guys doing oil changes are also newbies. I'm not saying everybody, but it occurs. 34 years in repair business so believe me on this one.

    Rob,
That’s good information. I wonder if that’s why it seems like my truck was only getting broken in around 5000 to 8000 miles. I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one starting and staying with synthetic.
