Hi guys. New to the forum, just traded my taco in for '19 crew max in cement (needed more towing power). Love it so far.... just start doing some mods, removed the driver side kick plate to put a fuse tap in for bed lights and found this interesting little black box with one wire coming out of it attached to nothing. It has some sticky putty/tar-like substance on it to stick to the side wall. For the life of me I have no idea what it is, any thoughts?

I tried removing some of the sticky stuff and it takes the ink off the barcode with it. Strange...

    GPS tracker.
Truck was originally a drug dealers truck that was impounded.
They are looking for their truck.

Back in 2012 I purchased a brand new Volkswagen. while under the dash one day I found a weird cheesy looking black electronic box tied into the ignition system. I took it back to Volkswagen and ask them what it was and to remove it. They told me it was an aftermarket GPS system that they have a third party install in all their vehicles and it's activated upon purchase if the customer decides to subscribe. The dealer had a contract with the company

All joking aside I think your answers are on that sticker. Try and find a way to get that tar stuff off it and cross reference some of the numbers on it. From what I can see there is both an IC and FCC ID number on there, those are wireless device registration numbers. The IC numbers first five digits are the business registration number so you'll be able to find out where it came from.

Just removed some of the tar. The words "reperage tag" can now be seen. French for surveillance tag. So it is a tracker of some sort. I should be ok to just toss it right?

Is your truck from Canada? That would explain why it's in French. Look on the window for a symbol that says "tag" on it. It's likely part of their system, pretty common on Canadian vehicles. Here's their website:

No not leased. Bought used from a Ford dealer with 5,000 miles on it a few weeks ago. Was told it was a demo or fleet vehicle, car fax said the same.

That could explain it. Fleet vehicle, company monitoring the drivers.

Mail it to @ARamirez73 then he can stick it on a train.:rofl:

I believe the Medic just called bingo. Symbol on the window says "tag" and matches that website. It's a Canadian lo jack. Now the question is toss it or call my insurance company to see if I get a discount?

We have similar devices in most every vehicle in our fleet at work. Pretty common these days. Tracks speed, hard turns/stops, idle time etc...
