I have a friend who will soon be celebrating his 80th birthday. He is quite a character and drinks scotch. I'm not a scotch-drinker myself so I have very limited knowledge of what brand to get him. I am not opposed to spending up to about $100.00 on a good bottle. Can any of you recommend a good one?

My friend, what you are asking is nearly impossible. Single Malt Scotch varies so much from place to place and the flavors are different from each distillery and district. Like asking what is a good wine, you really can’t put sweet whites in the same class as a deep port, if you get my drift. If you don’t know his preferences, strong peat, smoky, etc., go to a specialty whiskey shop and pick one. Even if it’s not exactly the one he would have chosen, he will enjoy it and appreciate it.

Avoid any that are not “Single Malts “.
    No “blends “

That is endless. Up to a hundred bucks I would look at balvenie double wood 12 years it is a very nice scotch. Should run you around 80 bucks. 80 years old? Nock his socks off. Balvinie Portwood 21 is excellent. But that will set back about 250.00. Lots of great options. What does he normally drink?

Ask if he likes smoky/peaty scotch or not. If he does, lagavulin 12 or 16. If not, glenfiddich 14 bourbon cask or spend a little more on a glenfiddich 21 rum cask

If you want to change things up, go bourbon and get an old forester 1920

I've never dabbled in singles but Johnny Walker Black is a go to blended. Buchanan is a good blend but real peaty. My wife's father is a Scotch drinker and prefers Johnny Black over the Blue. Check out Macallan in 10-12 year for a single. Glenfiddich is also a good choice. If you're not dead set on getting Scotch check around NWA like Macadoodles and see if you can find some Blantons Bourbon, damn good stuff right there.

Single Malts are going to be a better pick. List from favorite to still equally delicious.

    1. Glenlivet 15 year French Oak Reserve
    2. Talisker 10
2a. Balvenie 14 year caribean cask
    2b. Balvenie Double wood 12
    3. Glenmorangie 12 year Port Cask
    4. Glenfidditch 12 year
    5. Macallan 12 year.

These are available in most liquor stores.

I prefer Speysides amd Highlands regiona. I can highly recommend Glenfarclas 15 for an excellent under rated Highland scotch. Cragganmore 12 is a great Speyside. I also really enjoy the Glenrothes as well for a Speyside.

Not sure if any of you have tried the Japanese Whiskey “Hibiki”. In my opinion is one of the best. Range $70-80. There is a pretty cool story behind it and the amount of detail in the bottle is amazing. From the paper they use for the label to the shape of the bottle.

The problem with Hibiki, IMO, is now the age stated ones are nearly impossible to find.

The NAS Japanese Harmony one is OK at $55ish.

I somehow don’t think i would give an 80year old man whiskey from Japan. The chance of a significant offense might make this a poor choice for a gift. A common problem with gift giving is the temptation to give something that WE like, not what the recipient likes.

Hobbyist tastes are so particular, I’d be afraid of giving him something if you didn’t know it was his jam. Like when my wife tries to buy me truck/gun/booze stuff, it’s well intentioned but rarely hits the mark. Maybe offer to take him to his fave store so he can pick out what we wants?

He’ll like this one! Seriously, if you live in Texas and are near a large town, find a Spec’s Liquor store. They usually have a great selection of high end scotch. The best stuff will probably be in a locked case near the front counter (but there will be a large amount of good stuff on the shelves, too). Staff are generally knowledgeable. Make sure to find out if he likes “peaty” scotches or not - people either love them or hate them. A good highland or speyside region scotch is probably your best bet. My favorites brands are Glenmorangie, Balvenie, Aberlour, and Glenlivit.
