Go to 5.29s. Worth the jump.

I would not spend the money to re-gear for 33" tires. If you dont plan on going any bigger just save your money for a bit and get a supercharger.

I don’t think it’s worth switching the gearset for such a small change in tire size. That’s a big job with a high labor cost. You would want to consider adding an LSD while the rear end was open as well, making things even more expensive. From what I’ve gathered, it’s about $5,000 all said and done. I would rather put that towards a blower. The 4.3 rear end would be more ideal the higher up in power you go.

    Tastefully enhanced...
And if you're set on a regearing, ignore 4.88s and move right to 5.29s...

I used the seals in the Yukon install kit from ECGS. That was back in 2022. Zero issues.

Is there credence to using a taller gear ratio for SC applications? I have read the lower gear ratio is weaker with higher HP/Tq

No way I’d run a 5.29 on my setup too much gear. 4.88s sitting here on the shelf.

Well, if I blow the rear end out, I'll drop down to 4.88. You're also pushing way more HP

Can confirm. Went w 4.88s initially, and when the shit work of the first regear required a rework, I went to 5.29s.

Should have gone with 5.29s initially. Also should have a had ZUK do the regear the first time, but...live and learn.

    Had it towed home.
Started smelling antifreeze, heard air bubbles going through the heat exchanger in the cab, and noticed the temp rising quickly. Pulled over and shut her off. Started it a few times after periods of cool down, in order to get it off the freeway shoulder. With all the snow, I couldn't get very far off the road. Drove it about 1.5 miles over 4 short runs to get it safely in a parking lot.
There is antifreeze all over the front of the engine. Hoping and praying it's just water pump or thermostat housing or a busted hose.

Only oil in crankcase and only antifreeze in the radiator. That's a good sign.

Out of everyone on this board, you would be the one use case I’d agree with. Otherwise, 5.29’s all day long. I love mine.

I'm in the same camp as Rey - 5.29 seems like way too much gear with the SC. I'm still on smaller tires, but 80 MPH on the freeway and it almost feels like there's too much gear with the stock 4.30's.

I have a set of 4.88's on the shelf that I was planning on installing when I switched out my worn out Auburn LSD for a Speedmaster. My drivetrain specialist friend gave me that look like, do you REALLY want to gear down? He builds plenty of race cars along with stock rebuilds and some medium duty stuff mixed in. He knows exactly what I do with my truck and how much weight it sees in the bed and on the hitch, and just asked 'Does your truck have troubles pulling hills?' Well, no. Pulls 10k enclosed in 5th and drops down to 4th on hills at 70 MPH. 'Then why regear?' I was standing there with money in hand to have it done.

He made a valid point. And save me enough dough that I'm putting a Powertrax in my '21.

Great sign. Hopefully it's just a hose or water pump.

Water pump. The pulley is looser than the ex-wife.
Ordered Aisin pump and thermostat, gates radiator cap from Rock auto. Have to wait until Friday to get them.

When I was towing NA, the 5.29s were fantastic. Now, it's a hit or miss for me. I am not towing as much right now (went seasonal), but it's also really nice when out of boost. In boost, it's nearly too much of a good thing. I do believe the gears are still helping not nuke the trans, and I couldn't imagine driving the truck without the Powertrax I had installed during the regear, so, IDK. Choose your poison. The lower engine load is nice, and I don't mind being 600-700rpm higher. Towing NA it kept me closer to the power band, and with the TC, well, it doesn't mind where it runs at. ;)

Demello Off Road front bumper finally arrived late last week, unfortunately the powder coating took a bit of an abuse during shipping from careless handling, so dropping it off at a local shop tomorrow to get it re-coated.

Going to go a little more custom MGM/black with it this time which is how I originally wanted it so it actually works out.

Very excited to get this thing installed after a long wait time, but it was worth it. Besides the current powder coating it looks great so can’t wait to see it once it’s done.

Also getting my RCI front skid re-done in black as it’s about 5 years on the truck now and looking a little rough. IMG_3473.jpg

You can see where it's been eating away at the metal on both pieces. I bet replacing the tensioner and belt a few weeks ago sped this up.
