IMG_6651.jpgPondering wheel, tire & suspension setups. The truck has stock TRD Sport suspension & 275/60/20 BFG K02 currently, but it definitely looks like there’s room for more how it sits:monocle:

I’ve browsed through that a few times, my truck already has the largest tire I can run on the 20” & stock suspension according to that list. But when I actually look at my truck & crank the wheel side to side, there’s definitely still room. I don’t want to do any metal cutting on it, but would like to go 18s with more meaty rubber. The tires on there are 10/32 so it’ll be awhile.

It's not about the front/rear spacing at rest - you need to look at both sides with the steering wheel at 3/4-full lock and see how close you are to the bumper and cab mount and the plastics on both. And if you off road at all, need to plan for additional clearance at lock during any type of articulation.

I’ll have to get a measure on it turned each way next time the truck is on. Nothing serious for me as far as rock crawling goes, but the truck will definitely go around some mild PNW trails/ snow spots.

You can definitely go to a bigger tire on the stock wheels and probably be okay, but you’ll need to remove the front spat on the bumper and most likely trim up the mudflaps a bit. I ran 295/70R18 on my TRD off road wheels and did those things. Once I added wheel spacers, had to do a little more trimming. And then a little more when I added new wheels with +18 offset. And then a cab mount chip when I moved up to 35s… welcome to the rabbit hole

Aside from the ranch hand, this is the route I was in the middle of when my '15 was totaled. I'm planning on doing it to my new '21 but using a front hitch receiver until I get a front winch bumper.

I already have the trailer set up for it, just need to route the power wires to the back. I got a set of quick connect jumper cables when I bought all the supplies for running the wiring, so for right now when I use the winch on the trailer, I just run the jumper cables up to the battery. It worked pretty well, my setups first pull was this wildfire burnt dead dodge.

Like @TRDFerguson said above, look at the spacing when turned full lock. Keep in mind that wheel offset and tire width will both have an affect on how big you can go in diameter. The less positive the offset and the wider the tire will both reduce how big in diameter you can go, unless you place to cut some stuff up. The tires design could also have an affect if it has a wider shoulder when compared to other tires of the same size. I didn't want to cut and I wanted to keep mudflaps, I am running 285/75R17 tires with a +35 offset rim and my alignment has the caster near +3°, I have the small flap in front of the tire removed and the liner pushed forward slightly and I clear both front bumper liner and mudflap no problem, I will likely go a little bigger next time now that I see what I'm working with, but I'll also probably go with an aftermarket slimmer mudflap for extra clearance.

I’ve noticed the hole runs deep… luckily I’ve had project cars for the 10+ years my wife & I have been together so there’s a level of understanding already ground in  added bonus of my truck being a company rig :amen: I’m fine with plastic cutting, but don’t think I want to get into the metal. To be continued after work, thanks for the input

wow... it's like you're my doppelganger... I did a similar thing with my Tacoma last year with a 1978 K5 Blazer. except the K5 Blazer was mine and I accidentally burned it to the ground 4 years prior until the Forest service finally called me to get it out. in my defense at the time of the incident I talked to the fire department and the police department and gave them my info to contact me but they never did and in my opinion at the time I thought it was impossible to get it out without a badass off-road wrecker or a front end loader. ended up doing it with my Tacoma and my buddies Silverado and a rented U-Haul dolly. was a hell of an adventure... I'm still butt hurt. that K5 was sweet.

Wow! Sad to see an old K5 go but that's exactly why I want to do the winch setup this way. At least until I can justify a winch bumper on this truck. The biggest problem I have with it is eating up some of my ground clearance with the front receiver. Might have to look into something custom :monocle:

BTW, good to see another CO guy on here.

All my suspension parts got delivered from Hotshot Off-road, dirt king uca’s, bilstein 6112/5160’s, and a coach builder shim.

I was planning on doing the install myself, but after installing the rears, I realized my tools are a bit inadequate. My floor jack and jack stands were pretty much maxed out and I decided to have a shop install the 6112’s and uca, not worth the risk imo.

:fistbump: hazzah colorado! I looked into front receivers too super low hanging fruit. not a lot of good options for even bumpers with front receivers. I've seen people take a front receiver and modify it so it sticks out straight instead of dropping down. requires cutting/welding and you have to cut a hole in your factory bumper for it to poke out through. this guy on YouTube did it with his Chevy.

Do they still have that off road park there in Kremmling? I went there once right when it opened as a spectator for a competition and remember watching Mike Caskey from Off Road Solutions showing off in his 2nd gen 4runner doing some crazy obstacles in reverse and whatnot to please the crowd. This was probably late 90’s?

wait which one? Not for the smart key cause you have a 19?

edit: I’m slow and didn’t know he made one for the 18-19… I just wish it was an actually smaller case and not larger
