Mine is arriving tomorrow! Still can’t understand why some engineer designed the factory switch that way. Glad to finally get it corrected!

The OE configuration (to me) was all jacked up; it wasn't natural. Up should mean volume up and down should mean volume down. I don't know how many times in my '21 Pro and my '19 4Runner I pushed up thinking 'volume' up; but instead would jump to the next track, etc. on my playlist :frusty:... in contrast, when I wanted to skip to the next track, I'd push right button and it would bump volume up by a click :smash:

I know probably shouldn't be a huge deal, but it's been a huge peeve of mine

This is where a swap with someone who actually wants this thing feels like the most reasonable path forward. Because buying an aftermarket head unit, maybe a maestro, and some OEM controls and some sort of dash kit or oem parts, yeah, seems like a good way to spend a few thousand dollars.

Anyway, super helpful to know this isn't an OEM setup, I am too new to 2.5 gen to really know.

To do it right, will need to know a bit more details on the truck. The AC controls connect into a dedicated climate ECU that is specific to the cab configuration and climate control “trim” (auto or manual). Mismatching those can be problematic.

And the original stereo spec on the truck is helpful because there are three options and each one presents different options to returning to “stock” (all depending on how much the previous owner modified or ripped out in the process of switching to the Android unit). There are the BASE audio system that has only the head unit, the “premium” audio that adds an amp under the passenger seat (even if the previous owner removed it), and the JBL audio that has a JBL amp under the passenger seat, AND the JBL logo on the lower speaker door panels as well as tweeters in the upper door at the mirror sail panels.

Doing a VIN lookup on the Toyota site is going to be the best way to know what the truck started out as - what trim level it is and what factory options it had.

I forgot you’re in the PNW… Seattle area? Happy to connect at some point and offer some guidance.

Mighty nice of you. I did ask him for a photo to confirm JBL vs not JBL, I know how much of a headache that one is. I can ask him for a photo of the VIN I guess, then look up the details on toyota owners.

I would imagine he'd prefer the base radio, he likes knobs and buttons, dislikes touchscreens. I have quite the array of car stereo for my own trucks and most of the connectors as well from building harnesses so I'm not overly worried about any wiring once I start taking things apart. Sourcing an OEM amp if one is missing would be an annoying complication, I'd so much rather stuff in one of my JL's if that were the case and go with an aftermarket head unit. The HVAC stuff is where I'm fresh to the game and playing catch up.

In theory, other than HVAC and trim, there are no other missing pieces? And the three HVAC knobs he does have, those are unrelated? I need to look over some photos of stock setups.

I'm near Portland but this truck is in Santa Barbara where my friend lives so if I'm able to get it here, it'll be a tight window.

ETA: Photo from referenced thread, this helps me understand:

I have a heavy foot and after my first month with the truck I couldn't get better than 12mpg. I bought PC and now enjoy 16mpg+ in the city with eco mode.

Once in a while I will put it on sport, but that's rare as I don't travel on highways often. Sport mode is for getting around cars parked in the left lane.

City minus 1 should get rid of the jump but YMMV.
