What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Those fittings are so stupid expensive though! I messed with that stuff on my fastback and I’m convinced flairing hardlines is the way to go.

 

I did these on the Fjord. Just to fasten tarps, or bungees, other covers. Wouldn't expect them to keep a motorcycle in place, etc. Had to keep them waxed, they wanted to rust. But $20ish for all 4 hole fillers.

 

Depends on whether steel or aluminum line and whether single, bubble, or double flare.

Time and frustration is money. If you don't flare often, it can be the biggest pain in the ass ever. And double-flaring is one of the most painful things I've ever had to done.

If you have more time and patience than money, hard line is the way to go. But the Summit Racing brand fittings weren't too bad in $$ still, last time I had to use them.

 

It would be great if we don't fill it with shit posts again and get it locked. We need it open. How many days are they going to punish us?

Yeah, we used the off brand stuff and it saved some. Seems like every time we would work on it, I would figure out I needed a different or additional fitting. Then would have to order and wait for shipping. It's like when you are working on the house and spend more time running to HD for stupid shit than you spend on the actual project. Only thing is, I can't run down the road for fittings.

 

You need a helicopter.

 

You are asking a lot of us unrefined, wal-mart shopping first gen owners. But I agree, we should all be much more careful socializing so freely on here. It's a threat to our tundrocracy!

Anyone ever try Plastidip over metal to protect it from rusting?

Thinking about doing it for some exposed metal on the existing fuel line.

 

@FirstGenVol plasti-dipped his bumper that I put on the V6. I don't know how well it'll protect against rust, if any at all. I'd use fluid film even on bare metal.

 

It's all fun and games as long as you don't ever tear or have water entry into it. It's just a skin, just like powdercoat, and any water entry point is your worst enemy: Will rot it from the inside out. What oozes in often doesn't easily ooze back out.

I'm spoiled rotten, one of the only awesome things about where I'm stuck at the moment. Summit Racing down in McDonough GA is a 35min drive for me, if no traffic. It used to be 35min drive with traffic, nowadays with traffic it can take an hour and a half.

Seems like traffic is worse outside the city these days than it is inside. Basically gotta avoid any interstate where it crosses I-285, avoid I-75/I-85 for the 1st 10-20 miles north of I-285, and avoid I-75/I-85 between Locust Grove and Forest Park on the south side, and forget about the I-20 cross in downtown... especially if you're coming east on I-20 and trying to merge northbound on 75/85. I look forward to gtfo here in the next decade...

 

So, Toyota dealer is pointing the finger at my scangauge for the airbag light. Anyone else ever heard of that? I’m fine with losing it if that’s the ticket. Just seems unlikely to be a root cause of trouble.

Also kinda odd that it worked fine for months then decided it wasn’t happy on my 1100 mile drive north.

 

Ah, from the transcription they say plugging it back in causes the codes to come back. Ok, fair enough I guess. A bit disappointing but I’d probably prefer airbags to trans temp I guess.

Did you program anything into it in the days prior to taking the trip? Just curious if something you may've added in may be feeding back.

It's entirely possible the SG is doing something stupid, and the SG folks will be aware. Whenever you can muster up time/privacy to call

We had some on a work truck that you could retract if you pushed down on the metal part. So pretty much looks like bedrail when you aren't using it.

 

So it sounds like Plastidip isn’t very good for bonding with the metal to keep out moisture. Guess it makes sense since you can still peel it off things. I’ll go with POR-15 instead. It works well until it starts to flake after several years from my own experience in using it.

 

When I was younger I has a USB to OBD2 dongle and would just look at the laptop software while in the car just for fun. When I hooked it to an 05 astro with a 4.3 it wouldn't start anymore. The only time I've ever seen anything like that.

When my great uncle passed about 15 years back, he left behind two early 50s C30 pickups in a field south of Seguin with nice patina like that. I tried like hell to get the family to give them to me, but nobody was willing to let me come grab 'em. Still pissed about that.

 

If it's peeling after a few years, I suspect it's b/c the surface wasn't prepped right, or there was unaddressed corrosion under. I haven't seen it or the Rust Bullet product peel or flake unless there was unaddressed corrosion (yet). But I don't work with it a lot in the last 10ish years, since the kids arrived, so maybe formula changed.

Usually if it’s applied wrong (no prep on bare metal) it’ll flake within a few weeks as I’ve noticed. I certainly applied it correctly but I deal with harsher conditions so it’ll start to flake from debris and partial sun exposure over a few years here.

 

Loaded the best Gen with firewood. The 2019’s carpeted bed is sensitive to such messy affairs.
