PBNB. You shouldn't notice the Timbrens at all unloaded. Check for space between the timbren and axle. They will send you a shorter base a no charge if you need it. I have about an 1" of space.

I have them as well. No issues without a load. I've only bottomed out a couple of times on the terrible roads in California. They definitely help when towing.

Thanks, I have about 1/2" of space. What I am feeling is the Timbren contacting the axle under some suspension movement so the little gap is taken up and then the stiff Timbren stops the suspension making the ride stiff. That's why I was wondering if they soften up over time.

PBNB. Contact Timbren to get the shorter base sent to you. You don't have to send your current ones back. You'll be able to compare.

I like them, I have a good inch clearance, so don't really feel them unless driving on a bad road, whether they'll soften, not sure. I hope not.

23 crewmax 6.5 with air bags and equalizer weight distributing hitch. 1972 23’ Airstream ~5000lbs, and a bed full of gear. About 1600 mile round trip from outside Sacramento (75’ above sea level) over the Sierra (~7300’), across the desert and again back uphill into the sawtooth. Did pretty great. Overall was close to 12.5-13 mpg which I was pleasantly surprised at. Towing between 60 in CA and 65-70 in NV and ID when freeway conditions allowed.

So far, no. There were a few minor cosmetic things that I resolved myself, but have not had anything that required me to have warranty work done.

Just picked up our Imagine 2670MK yesterday, it towed great to the house! Our first trip is next weekend. We upgraded from an Apex 215RBK, which I couldn't even tell that it was back there.

    And yes, I know it's a 23 not a 22, close enough.

We tow a 5500 lb travel trailer with 500 lb tongue weight, tandem wheels and Blue Ox WDH. We have approx 1300 lbs Payload with our SR5 CM as built, and with our camping gear, dogs, and us we are probably OK. The Tundra tows great, squats a bit, and has pretty low actual payload lbs the way they are actually equipped. But overall, except for having to be careful with the payload, it is a good light duty half ton TV.

Looks like a pretty large trailer for the Tundra? What is the hitch weight?

Listed as 690lbs, but realistically probably closer to 900lbs fully loaded. I’ve ran the numbers (https://www.towing-calculator.com/) and I’m cutting it close on payload, so I just need to be careful about how I load up. I want to get it to a scale at some point to get the real numbers, but so far the Tundra feels fully capable to pull it and stop it.

I wanted to come back to this thread after our big two week adventure. I hope my review and some of my numbers might help people with future purchase decisions...

We travelled from Canada down to Yellowstone, then over to the Bighorn Mountains, then over to the Black Hills, then back up home. We had a lot of diverse terrain and driving conditions: interstates, rolling hills, long steep up and downhill grades, etc.

We pulled an Imagine 2400BH with a 2023 Tundra Crewmax TRD OR and Andersen WDH. There were two adults and two older teenagers in the vehicle but nothing in the bed. The trailer was fairly loaded but tanks were all empty most of the time. I used Tow+ quite often given a lot of the trip was on rolling areas with constant changes in gears. Sure, 2000 RMPs for long stretches is hard on gas, but I think it kept the transmission happy for all 3000 miles of the trip. I used 91 Octane for the whole trip.

Here are my weights (WDH not engaged on top and WDH engaged on bottom). Truck was full of gas:

    IMG_2877.png IMG_2878.png

    Converted

    Without WDH
    Steer - 3,373 lbs
    Drive - 4,012 lbs
    Trailer - 6,504 lbs
    Gross - 13,889 lbs

    With WDH
    Steer - 3,571 lbs
    Drive - 3,725 lbs
    Trailer - 6,592 lbs
    Gross - 13,889 lbs

    Truck Specs
    GVWR - 7231 lbs
    Front Axle - 4079 lbs
    Rear Axle - 3858 lbs

    Trailer Specs
    Dry Weight - 5809 lbs
    GVWR - 7494 lbs
Length (bumper to hitch) - 28'11''

The numbers say I was 154 lbs over payload - and without WDH, 154 lbs over the rear axle rating. With the WDH engaged, I am still 154 lbs over payload (the 88lbs transferred to trailer axle doesn't count if you want a proper payload calculation), but I am within the rear axle limit by 133 pounds. It is pretty amazing that the WDH transfers 198 lbs to the front axle and 88 lbs to the trailer axle.

    Impressions

The truck tows great and was able to handle everything I asked it to do. I was really impressed with the performance of the Andersen WDH. There was never any sway, even on some windy stretches of prairie. When the wind kicked the trailer, it bounced right back in line immediately. The Andersen is a very light WDH, so the marginal implications to payload were very nice. It was also really easy to adjust with some simple turns of the nut.

The WDH got the truck extremely level - the wheel well heights between the front and back were within half an inch. I originally thought I might want air bags or springs but am now glad I saved my money. The rear squat was entirely equal to the front and the ride/bounce was fine.

The Imagine 2400 has a huge crawl through that we packed pretty full, but the under bunk storage at the back was used for things as well. I think we balanced it quite well because we didn't experience any "porpoising".

I tried using cruise control in various situations and found myself cancelling and getting back in control more often than not when dealing with rolling hills and steep grades. I found it braked too much and didn't downshift as soon as I would like. Otherwise, I felt the truck handled grades amazingly, and I didn't smell any brake stress at the brake checkpoints coming out of the long downhill stretches. Uphill was equally as impressive - the sounds of the turbos singing while pulling uphill became a nice soundtrack to the drives through mountain areas.

I've heard a lot of people note that they "barely notice" their trailer while towing. I think this is true in some sense, but most of the time I was very conscious of the trailer and could tell it was a lot of extra work for the truck to pull. I really didn't go over 65 mph on any interstates because it quickly became noticeable that I wouldn't be in full control. I also had to really slow down on sharp mountain turns if I wanted to be sure I was in full control.

My conclusion is that this is the maximum size of trailer I would ever want to tow with this truck given the type of camping we want to do and a cab full of passengers. I know some people "max out" at a 22 foot floorplan with a half ton, but a 24 foot floorplan is absolutely fine if you drive appropriately. I would pull upwards of a 2800BH if I just had short trips to local campgrounds, but I would not want to pull something like that on the type of trip we just had.

    Hope this helps.

    Sounds like a fun trip!

That looks like you got a decent amount of weight returned to the front axle. The weight to the trailer axle looks light. I know that with some larger trailers, the Andersen had a hard time getting the weight shifted. This is not my experience but some of the Airstream folks with the larger trailers have had that happen.

Do you know what the trailer tongue weight is?

Did you use the various tow modes. I found that Tow Max (if I recall) did a good job of adding engine braking on hills. Recently, I have been using the manual shift when starting up with the trailer onboard as it pulled the transmission into 1st rather than starting in 3rd.

Awesome report! I also tow a 24' travel trailer and can report the same experiences you had. I also agree that 24' is the largest I feel comfortable with for long trips in a 1/2 ton. The Tundra handles it really well and pulls like freight train. Heading up steeper inclines, you'd think it was a diesel the way it pulls. Very happy with the towing ability.

The tongue weight is somewhere around 780 pounds based on comparing these scale tickets to ones I did previously with just the truck full of passengers. This is closer to the 10% of GVWR range which makes sense for the trailer design. It’s marketed as a low tongue weight trailer.

I used both Tow modes and found very little difference between Tow/Haul and Tow+, so I just used Tow+ mostly given the over 5000 lbs weight. The engine braking didn’t seem to be super noticeable, but maybe I was using manual gears too much so it didn’t have to engage that much.

Just picked up the 2500RL. My non-hybrid Platinum with air bags performed very well during our inaugural trip. Don't know that I would want to go with much more load though.

Just added brakes to trailer. Coming from a dually Ram/Aisin with exhaust brakes, the Tundra brakes feel sketch to me even with this light load. I have a 33' bumper pull travel trailer, but it stays in OR. when I'm in AZ. for the Winter.

I wanted to report back after my first trip towing my Imagine 2670MK. It was a short trip from Raleigh, NC to Holden Beach, NC; about 2.5 hours of completely flat mostly straight highways. Compared to my previous Apex 215RBK, I could absolutely tell it was back there. No shortage of power or brake control, but it just felt heavier (as expected with a much bigger trailer). The Blue Ox WDH did a great job of managing sway, I think only once did I feel the trailer move and it was quickly right back in line. I do have more sag than I would like (I forgot to measure), so I'll probably be looking into Timbren SES bump stops and maybe eventually air bags. I had a little porpoising on some stretches, but overall a pretty consistently smooth ride. I had a similar experience to @TRD-JP, holding right around 2k RPMs and I was in TOW+ the whole time and had cruise control set to the speed limit the majority of the time. I don't think I'd want to take this up any steep mountain runs, but I don't really have any concerns with the short trips we have planned up and down the east coast.

    Jordan,

I was very tempted to go with the MK but decided it was just pushing it a bit too much. The rear air bags on my Platnium are great so I suspect you would be happy with getting a set.

Yea, we probably are pushing it numbers-wise, you'd never know driving it though. Air-bags are definitely on the list, I wish I would have gotten them from the start but none of the Platinums near me had them.

    Great info! I looked up the 2400 BH… it’s 28’11” long, correct? That’s a big boy.

Yes, just under 29'. I don't have any regrets and feel quite confident towing. I am pretty OCD and spent a lot of time calibrating my WDH at a CAT scale. With a good WDH that is calibrated properly, you will love this trailer and feel comfortable towing.

I know others on here push as far as 2800BH, but 2400BH is the max I would ever want to tow. We want the freedom to explore various landscapes.
