I wouldnt say for anyone towing 3k lbs with our trucks. That’s actually a very small load in relation to towing capacity. But, some idiot would prove me wrong loading a 14’ trailer with a pallet of sod loaded all the way to front of trailer…. But a properly balanced load on a trailer with 8-13% loaded extra to the tongue then 3k would be nothing.

Video also demonstrates that (in most cases) going up on ride height on a corner or axle increases the weight on that axle. Leveling the rig by raising rear suspension only adds more weight to that axle.

So, what is the point of the "load leveling" system and how should it be used when towing? As of the moment I'm typing this, I see no need to touch it.

You’re right, the bars should be set once the rear ride height self levels to “Normal” height. That should lift up the rear but again the load leveling suspension will self level and let air out of the air springs.

In the video, the weight balance changes when the ride increases because the attitude of the trailer changed. If they lowered the ball to match the ride height change, they would have seen little to no change in weight distribution. At any rate, I think the intention of the load leveling suspension is to return the rear height to the nominal height and maintain ride comfort by staying off the bump stops. It’s also useful if there’s a load in the bed since there’s no other way to move the weight distribution forward and raise the rear ride height.

That is a good video for sure. But I don't think they really cover how to setup a vehicle that has auto leveling air bags as their main spring in conjunction with WDH. I have not ever really seen that covered.

If you were to setup the truck with the bags at ride height. And then hook up the trailer so that it drops down and tensions the bars but then the truck starts and the air bags return the truck back to stock ride height, they just unloaded the bars and you lose a significant portion of your weight distribution

Curious how bags in conjunction with WD would or should be used? My truck sits level now with my TT loaded. I plan to put a leveling kit on it in the future, which would have the front nose high by about 2”. I’m my thinking, this is purely an aesthetic thing to fix (the front won’t actually be lifting up, it’s just higher to start). So, do I add bags to get around the nose high look, or just accept it for what it is if I level the truck?

My boat is a 23 1/2 foot Sea Hunt Ultra. It tows great. Plenty of power to get out of the water at the ramp and traverse the bridge I have to cross to the boat ramp.

I've got a 23' TT, roughly 5000# loaded and have towed a few times with it now and pretty impressed with the power and pull up hills, leagues better than my old Silverado 6.0L. I am however not impressed with the fuel economy towing. This all being said, I seem to be dealing with a headwind no matter which direction I have been going but am getting around 28L/100km (8.4 USMPG). I'm hoping this gets better over time as well as I get the opportunity to tow with the wind or in no wind.

WOW! I towed today for the first time with my Limited. I must say, I am very impressed with the way the truck tows. I was towing a 22ft enclosed car hauler with a 3500 pound car in it and the truck did absolutely fine. I am coming out of an F250 diesel and actually kind of regretted buying this truck. After today, all regret is gone! I am not overly worried about fuel economy, I bought the truck for a nice smooth ride when not towing. Towing once or twice a month and getting poor fuel economy certainly does not make this truck a deal breaker. I would say that most 1/2 trucks get poor fuel mileage when towing. I think once somebody offers some sort of aftermarket air ride, this thing will be an absolute beast

I have a SR5 CM 4x4 short bed with the load leveling suspension and am hauling a Grand Design Imagine 2670MK. It is 32', has a UVW of about 6400, GVWR of 8400, and a dry TW of 642lb. I am running with a 10k/lb Equalizer WD hitch. Loaded I am a little south of 8k with about 1k on the tongue. All our gear is loaded and balanced in the TT with only a couple of lightweight misc items in the truck bed. It is mostly just my wife, teenage son and I in the truck. I am right at my payload number of 1400lbs per the door sticker which sucks. All that said the rig does really well going down the road. I never get in a hurry loaded down maxing at 65mph and mostly staying somewhere between 60 and 65. The truck never struggles and I am getting just over 10mpg. I have not come across even a hint of sway and that is presumably because of the anti sway technology in the truck coupled with the Equalizer doing its job and doing it well. Paying attention when the big rigs go by is a must however. There is a bit of push and pull from the wind buffeting as they go by but nothing that has ever made me sense that things are getting out of shape. All in all, I am very happy with how the truck performs pulling this setup. Would it be improved with a 3/4 ton, of course. No second thoughts with this rig though! I searched long and hard for this type of info a few months back when making my decisions so I hope this helps anyone out there looking for similar performance feedback.

I'll be towing a 26' Grand design Transcend weighing 6100lbs dry cross country. Combined with My KTM 500 and gravel bike in the back of the truck I'm estimating the camper to weigh around 6800-7000 with gear but traveling dry, and a payload of around 1300 with fuel, the wife, the dog and my fat ass in the captain's chair. Hopefully I'm not pushing the truck to it's limits. We decided to go with the double cab for extra tow/payload capacity. The truck won't be here for a few more weeks... hopefully, so I have time to consider something else but I'd rather stay with a Yota. Any thoughts?

Sounds like your one and only consideration is going to be payload. 12% of a 7000lb TT for the tongue is gonna be 840 plus whatever the bike weighs. Best guess is you're gonna be just fine. You'll love the way it tows either way. You won't be anywhere near the tow capacity for truck. Those of us towing with half tons need really only be concerned with payload. That's what we run out of first.

I actually just made this for the F150 forum. Basically, if you raise the rear end with the air bags without the WDH being properly adjusted, you will release the tension on the spring bars and lose the WDH effect. The truck will look good, but you won't be getting the proper amount of distribution back to the front axle and lose sway control(assuming your WDH has built in sway like an Equal-i-zer).

Think about it this way, when you want to release your WDH you use the trailer jack to lift the front of the trailer and back of the truck up so that the bars release and you can pull them off by hand. The air bags lifting the rear end have the same exact effect.

Ideal WDH setup without air bags:

Air bags inflated but no adjustments made to WDH:

Air bags inflated but WDH adjusted specifically for the bags:

Yeah, that's what I've been worried about. Fortunately I'll save a little with the anti sway hitch but I'll take it easy anyway. The KTM weighs about 250lbs and I read some where that a lot of manufacturers est each seat around 150 lbs. I weigh about 175 the husky weighs 65, id tell you what the wife weighs but she'd murder me. So I think we'll be fine. Might struggle on some mountain passes thru colorado and a few other states.

So maybe I just deal with a bit of sag... I also may consider a 2" front, 1" rear lift rather than doing the front 2" to level. That would keep it closer to level when towing.

I tow our Imagine 2970RL travel trailer with my 2022 TRD with 8 foot bed. Plenty of torque and handles 34 ft, 9000(Gross)lb's well. My only complaint is that the rear suspension is needs to be stiffer when the trailer starts to porpoise (up and down). I am planning to install air bags when they are available. This is my 4th Tundra and towed travel trailers and 5th wheels with all of them. I added bags to stiffen rear suspension on all of them.

Slightly off topic, but not really... I'm sure some of ya'll can help me understand this better... We are new to the camper world, and I'm trying to understand all of these numbers...

If I understand correctly, a travel trailer's Payload is = to the GVWR - UVW/GCCC... That Payload number includes any gear, food, etc. you add + occupants' weight + water, propane, etc.

If that is correct, it would seem many small travel trailers (Jayco SLX 195RB for example) have fairly low Payload capacity...

Next question: Is a trailer's Payload capacity dynamic or static? I would think the number matters more when in travel, but I'm not sure... It would seem once set up on site with stabilizers and such, you may be able to cheat that Payload number... Otherwise I don't know how a family of 3-4 average sized Americans could even make due...

Just towed my Coleman TT, 5400lb dry weight. Probably 7600 loaded. We went from East of Sacramento down to LA. Traveled over the Grape Vine on I5. Truck did amazing!!!! I had a 2019 ram 1500 with the 8 spd transmission and a 2018 2500 gas with 6 speed. I’ll take the Tundra over either! Average 9.3 mph with 33 e rated bfg at’s. Truck pulled 60 with plenty left on the throttle up the Grape Vine at 2200 (ish) rpm. I was VERY impressed with this truck!

I’ve been really impressed with the towing on our last couple of camping trips. I have a 25’ Keystone Passport, ~6k lb loaded. The Tundra feels so much more capable than our previous tow vehicle, a 2018 Sequoia. [IMG]

Same here. Plenty of power when towing. I've had 4 people at the campground ask me what kind of fuel mileage I get. I haven't gotten an accurate number yet. Been toolen around town and haven't been on the interstate much. Anyone have numbers they want to share? I'm hoping between 8 and 10 towing.

Since no one else has replied yet, I'll try to help out some here.

Yes, the trailer's payload is GVWR - UVW. That payload number does in fact include any gear/food/fluids/propane/etc that you add to the trailer. For the purposes of towing, the weight of the occupants can be disregarded as there would be no occupants in the trailer while towing. Said occupants would count against the payload of the tow vehicle however. Anything in the trailer counts against the payload of the trailer. Anything in the truck counts against the payload of the truck (including the tongue weight of the trailer). When correctly loaded an average travel trailer's tongue weight is roughly 10% - 12% of total trailer weight. So if your trailer all loaded up weighs in at 7,000 lbs, it would have a tongue weight of 700-840 lbs.

As for your second question, the occupants are never counted as travel trailer payload even when parked. Payload weights are strictly for "under tow". In other words, once the trailer is on-site (especially with stabilizers down, taking weight off the axles) payload numbers no longer matter. COULD you put enough weight in a travel trailer (occupants or otherwise) to buckle the floors when it is on-site with stabilizers down)? Sure, but it's also unlikely. Payload numbers on a travel trailer are generally what the axles are rated to carry, not what the frame of the trailer can support.

Hope that helps and if anyone more knowledgeable about the subject disagrees, please chime in.

Having towed a roughly 5500 lb travel trailer up the Grapevine with a 2005 4Runner with the 4.7L V8 (7500 lb towing capacity), I know how brutal that tow can be. Had my eye on trans temps the whole way up and it was definitely starting to climb. Maxed out about 220 and glad it didn't get any higher. Glad to hear the Tundra handled it with relative ease.
