I watched this video of it this earlier this afternoon. At least the HD is actually HD. I figured w/a 7.3L gas engine the numbers would be higher as well. I imagine there's a lot of room for boosting those numbers though.

Chebby gets 420 and 460 out of their 6.2L since 2014. I'm just surprised with all the hype they BARELY beat out the 6 years old Chev 6.2. Talk about taking the wind out of your sails. I was actually (kind of, but not really) envisioning owning one of those.

That motor only goes in the 1500 series though, the 6.0L that is still in the 2500/3500 gets 360 HP and 380 lb-ft of torque. Having the highest output numbers is only part of what you would want from a motor in an F-250 or heavier truck. Mileage, duty cycle, and a lot of other factors are also important.

Just realized the thumbnail of the Ford in that video looks like someone Photoshopped the grille. Nope. Someone did that shit on purpose.

This. It’s not just the hp/tq numbers that matter.

I understand, its just so...underwhelming considering all the hype. I know, I know, that's what I get for buying into the hype. I am fully expecting Toyota to let us all down with the 4th gen, but I am also very much a cynic. I certainly hope to be pleasantly surprised like I was in 2007 when the 2nd gen first came out.

I may not be totally up on my gas motors in HD trucks, but is there a bigger displacement motor with more HP/TQ on the market? I do believe this makes them the top gorilla.

I was a little disappointed with the max torque curve at 4000 rpm. Kinda silly in a HD truck. Hell, the old tried and true 8.1L GM motor had 450 tq at 3200 rpm...and an Allison 1000 to back it up.

With the current offering on the motor specs and with the transmission offered, this could be a great workhorse for most people. Time will tell.

Yep... and you can get the Performance pkg on any 6.2 L GM that bumps the HP to 435. It's basically a performance air filter and better flow exhaust.

In the 2500/3500? I thought that was only on the 1500.

His article is about the new 6.6 gas engine from GM. The 6.2 is only for the 1500 and not HD

Yeah I figured the torque curve would be a little lower than 4000rpm Considering the current 6.2 is at 3800rpm. It’s the same as the gm 6.6 gas engine and the hemi 6.4 so they’re all at the same torque curve now for 2020

I think you guys are missing the point of this engine. This is going to be extremely de-tunesd in the name of longevity.

My 2017 f450 wrecker has a 6.8 v10 in it. That engine produces 362hp and 460ftlb in light duty truck applications. However, the same engine is de-tuned for heavier duty applications to just 288hp and 424ftlb of torque.

They do this for longevity. The HD chassis cab trucks can be purchased with a 200k mile warranty for the low low price of 5 grand and they do not want to be replacing engines in that time period. Additionally HD trucks are going to be taking a beating from employees and Ford knows this. Keeping power down by limiting the RPM on the motor is an easy way to lower wear. Another is to have a large displacement engine with a flat torque curve and no turbos to reduce cylinder pressure and temps.

My tow truck red lines at 4K rpm. The name of the game is a big flat torque curve with low wear to survive HD applications.

Could they make more power, absolutely. The question is why would they? I for one would dump this v10 for a v8 gasser in a heartbeat. Operating costs are lower on 8cyl than 10.

Oh for sure. I think the 6.0gm is the poster boy for being de tuned. Just figured they might’ve kept the same or lowered the torque curve with the 7.3 vs the 6.2

The engine should last forever pretty much

    It isn't about higher numbers.
It is about steady numbers and steady use in a HD truck.

Do the same work with a Tundra and it would last half as long.

I am not an anything guy and favor Toyota but I dont need an HD truck.
I want one pretty that I can show I have a little penis.

    If I owned a farm I wouldn't buy a Toyota

Agree with most of the sentiments here. I was surprised that they didn't at least hit the 500 mark on tq, though - just as a statement. I also agree with @ColoradoTJ about the peak torque - it should happen at a lower RPM. The torque curve is pretty much always over 400, though:

That is alot of displacement to play with - so you will be able to make some huge numbers if you wanted to. But, I'll pass.

I've spent my entire working career in gas Super Duties. They don't last as long as you think. I've had the old 460, countless 5.4's and here's my current 6.2. They have one advantage. ..cost. But they are 100k vehicles, then trade em in or rebuild it. We rebuild ours because we have an in-house transportation Dept with a large shop

58.9hp per liter! That is just AWESOME FORD!!!! wow. Amazing numbers. Lets be honest it was about as thrilling as Chevrolet releasing the base model Corvette with 495hp. They couldn't push it to just 10 more hp to say 505 and make everyone feel like they bought something amazing. Nope.... So here is the pitch.........swing and a miss.

I worked on farms but never worked one so I am guessing I will take it back.
Listening to the farmers I would have thought they never broke down
My neighbor has all dodge and they are some old rough looking trucks but they are still going.
I guess I dont see them working on the at night though

I don’t know. If I was in need of an HD truck I would definitely consider a gasser. And I don’t know enough about diesels all although I’m sure I could learn. I think I would rather deal with the maintenance on a gasoline engine. I would bet that is a pretty stout engine and would put in the work. Plus I could daily drive it.

Fleet/work trucks aren’t about this insane power. Does it have diesel power? Nope, but they’re far more reliable and way cheaper to maintain and keep running.

If I went hd, I’d go Chevy 6.0 and diablew tune :D

That is a FAT torque curve and I bet this new motor pulls very well for what it is. 400 Ft. Lbs. at just about 1500 RPM is really nice.

Looks like a promising engine for a tough market. Not everyone wants the maintenance and cost of diesel. Hopefully they've outsourced their VVT system. Ford has built some really good engines only to have they taken down by their junk cam phasers. Also, hopefully if they're using a tensioning system on that short cam in block timing chain it's not the plastic break and fall in the oil pan type they're famous for.
