I'm wanting to start researching public land hunting out West. What are the best resources to start with? Any good forum suggestions?

Try the on x map app. It gives you the land owners information. A hunting must have.

Yeah I've had that a while for all the hunting and exploring I do east of the Mississippi.

I'm now in the infant stages of researching hunting out west. I know that its much different than what I'm used to, so I want to spend time understanding as much as possible before I begin making investments.

@MSU Tundra Are you looking at just general info for all game types or is there a specific species (elk, mule deer, bighorn, etc.) you are after? I can tell you all I know about hunting here in New Mexico, as far as other states here in the West, I am still learning myself. If interested in learning about NM just let me know. Cheers

Asking in general to start with. I’m just wanting to get my feet wet without breaking the bank. My aim is to start gaining broad experience now so I can start narrowing down to what really peaks my interest. I don’t want to limit myself to a specific animal or western region until I see as much as I can over the next 5 or 6 seasons. I get plenty of whitetail meat so it not about meat right now, just the experience.

You need to define "Out West" which states are you leaning towards ? Even California has elk, antelope, mule deer and big horn sheep, just sayin.

Not really leaning toward any state. That's the reasoning behind my question. I'll be a total newbie to this type of hunting and want to understand where the best places and what animals are best to get started. I really want to experience different area/terrain and animals over the next few years so I can have a understanding of what I like the most. My main motivation is just to get out in remote areas and seeing animals that I'm not used to seeing. I get all of the whitetail meat that I need every year hunting in the mid-west so meat is secondary. I just want to learn.

Antelope or mule deer would be a good place to start, the former in WY wouldn’t be a bad choice. Mule deer could be a first western hunt in almost any state here and be worth it too. Unfortunately we have very little public land here in eastern CO, but mountain hunting wouldn’t be too terrible.

New Mexico has tons of public land available to hunters, but the unfortunate part is we are a draw system only State. I would suggest researching which states out here have over the counter license opportunities and start there.

If you ever want some info on NM just send me a message. Cheers and good luck

Thanks @zcarpenter92 and @Medic343 ! I had been looking at antelope/mule deer in Wyoming and I’ll check out NM as well.
