I work now in the paving/excavation/contracting industry. We have a Carlton scale in the back that we weigh all dump trucks, tractors, etc...... before and after loading to make sure we make weights and are legal on the highway. I drove my truck across it for the hell of it today. Did not print out a ticket but our weigh master wrote it down and 5 of us had to guess. Everyone else was guessing low 4K, one said 5k. I really had no idea, but guess 6k. They said I am crazy.

Low and behold, the truck weighed 6,440 pounds. Half a tank of fuel with me in it.

That means I have room for 760 more pounds to be legal.

looking at travel trailers with around 500 lb. advertised tongue weight.

Wife weighs 140, 2 kids combined 110 lbs. So 250 combined.

As long as my wife does not bring her purse, we should be 10 lbs. under weight at 7,190 pounds.....

Yes, it is a Platinum so it is a crewmax.

the other guys were blown away it weighed the much. He have several brand new Denali 1500 and 2500HD and new F-150 that we are going to weigh when time permits or limited by weather.

I didn't realize that only a CM could be a Platinum. I'll be interested in what the 2500 comes in at.

when time permits we will drive it across the scale. We also have a good number of F250 also. All of them are crew cab short beds and diesels. Should be a good comparison between the GMC and Ford just to see what they weigh.

You should check out the tow section and J2807 standards. Your wife can bring her purse.

16 GMC 3500HD, short bed, CC, diesel 7692 lbs.

Dont forget the missing 15 gallons of gas to be at a full tank. Around 90 more pounds. (Gas weighs around 6lbs per gallon) You're gonna be over....guess you'll be leaving the wife behind. Lol

J2807 towing standards allow for full fuel, 300 lbs of occupants, and 70 lbs of hitch.

No. The J2807 standards are for calculating towing capacities. It does nothing to increase your GVWR. This seems to be debated here and on other forums, but J2807, the way I read it, is a towing performance standard only. It doesn't apply to payload/GVWR.

    From the standard:

The tow-vehicle shall be able to accomodate appropriate trailer tongue and/or kingpin weight to attain a particular trailer weight rating without exceeding rear GAWR and/or GVWR.

Now you guys have me worried. In NY if you are over 6,000 pounds, you have to get commercial plates. When my new Tundra SR5 arrives, will the reg be under 6,000??

I took a water heater to the scrap yard last winter and my truck weighed in right around 6,500 lbs too. They are definitely built heavy.

SR5 weighs a couple hundred pounds less than the Platinum for several reasons. If you add bed liner and tonneau cover that is almost 200 lbs. from what I can figure. Line-X premium I have been told adds 85 lbs. I am in the heftier dude, haha and had a close to full tank when mine weighed 6,440. Plus RCI skid and running boards.

My best guess is an SR5 crewmax 4x4 will dress out at 5,800 to 6,000 dry weight.

I still wouldn't worry about it. Must not be a big deal in NY or all tundras your would see with the commercial tags you speak of.
