Anyone else have an issue with the weather stripping on your roof coming off whenever you go through a car wash? There’s a junction where it connects to another piece right above the rear door (Crewmax), and it keeps popping out and flopping around like one of those “Wacky Wavy Inflatable Arms Man” things. I went to the dealership immediately after it happened the first time, and the advisor gave me a long analogy about the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion, and how it was a series of perfect coincidences that caused it to happen - and how that’s what causes this to happen as well. He said it should never happen again, and he was wrong. It’s going to be at the dealership for 10K miles service on Saturday, and I’ll bring it up then - I’m just curious if anyone else has had this issue too. Here are come up close photos of the junction, I didn’t take any pictures of the whole strip - but can if anyone wants to see it.

yes, just happened the first time a couple weeks ago. The small weather-stripping between the windshield and roof was also coming off and flopping against the roof -- luckily no scratches. I'm nearly due for my 5k service, so I plan to bring it up then.

Glad I'm not alone, I also noticed that the weather stripping around my drivers door was peeling away, looks like some kind of foam adhesive behind it, there's no adhesive on the roof though.

It has happened 2x to me also on the roof. Only happens when I go through an automatic car wash. I go through a hand wash place now so no more problems.

The automatic car wash was pretty soft also.

I had the issue before installing roof tracks. I used some loctite weatherproof glue to fix it.

Unfortunately, I don't have any hand wash places around me - and just haven't had the time to wash it myself lately. Regardless, I should be able to go through an automatic car wash without this problem.

That's what the dealership told me they would do as well, did you just loctite it at the junction? Not the whole strip, right?

I put a thin line down for a foot or so if I remember right, and then a little more at the end.

The loose roof molding problem is not new, but was supposed to have been solved by a TSB years ago. Required new molding part numbers, etc., etc. Sometimes the magic works.

Thanks, this will be a good thing to show to the advisor - even though it’s for previous years.

So the dealership looked at it during my 10K service; all they told me was that they had ordered the part and that the parts department would call me when it arrives. I didn't even think to confirm that it'll be covered under my warranty, but did notice there were prices on my service report.

I remember seeing prices on my warranty repairs before. The only one that matters is the price at the bottom.

Toyota replaced both trims, and the trim around my drivers door window. No hassle at all.

I had the same thing happen on my 2015 - brushes in the car wash took it right off. Had to order another from dealer at $80+. I glued the new one in and so far still there.

Did they glue it or secure it in any way? If not, it might come off again. Might want to put a little weatherproof glue under it.

The tech did note the cause of the issue was "insufficient adhesive"; so I'm hoping they used someting. I'll check, and put some loctite if there's nothing.

I've just left them off...the amount of times I'm ever on top looking or anyone else for that matter looking, is too low for me to remotely care...weight reduction and speed grooves are what it gave me doing nothing about it...Ha! :homer:

I see a trend here sure sounds like God is telling folks to stop using automatic car washes.

Noticed one side almost flapping off after stopping at a grocery store, I peeled both up and Gorilla glued them down, that was maybe 2 years ago. Have never gone through a car wash.

This happened on my 2008. I have purchased new weather stripping for it and will affix with 3M VHB tape.

For those of you that have glued the strip down, how did you prep the paint? Did you just clean it with some alcohol wipes?

I had 5 new tundras and this happened to all of them going through the car wash.

I removed the entire affected area weather stripping from front to back. I cleaned lightly with soap and water and used alcohol wipes for final cleaning. Then I used clear double sided 3m tape from front to back and placed the stripping ontop and applied pressure. I never had this happened again and Im a guy that goes through the wash 3-5 times a week because I have a membership.

Im not a fan of glue because I tried it with the first Tundra and it didn't work at the car wash and it didn't sit right with me to glue stuff together.

I hope that helps and good luck

Did you use the standard double sided or high bond or very high bond? Or was it something else?
