I have a 2017 Cement Grey Pro, with the stock stereo system. Looking to buy the JL Audio RD 900/5 amp to power my upgraded system. My hold up is with the subs. I’ve got a 500w sub channel available. Which, I think should be enough. I’m no longer in my teens and a bass head. But, still want some bass when in the mood for it.

So, what would be better? 2 x JL 10TW1’s or 1 x JL 12TW3? I’m thinking the 500 watts won’t be enough to really push the dual 10’s. But, would be great for a single 12 that’s a higher tier W3. Does anyone have experience with these type of setups? Would a single 12 be “enough?” Thanks in advance!

I run a single 12” and find it to be plenty but it’s gonna come down to the the box design with the appropriate sub. I would reach out to james @tech12volt to get the sub and box combo. He custom makes boxes that are resin coated designed for our trucks.

No problem. If you search the audio threads you will see the recommendation for james come up consistently. I have installed two of his systems now and they rock and he is awesome

I’d also HIGHLY recommend getting PAC LC-1 installed. It essentially creates a bass control knob and goes in line with the RCAs leading to the sub input on the amp. Yes, you can technically control the sub through the stereo by lower the bass or sub output on the aftermarket radio. However, you won’t have to go through a few screens to get to the settings and it’s as simple as turning a knob. I took the case off and custom mounted it in one of my blanks. Now if I go from a song with hardly any bass (Example: beatles or anything old) to a song with a lot of bass (pretty much anything 1990+) I can instantly adjust the bass.

Oh and I’d personally go with single 12tw3. Properly built box for a good sub makes the setup complete. Also takes up less space than 2 subs. I have a single shallow Kenwood 12 with a mono Alpine amp that had laying around my garage. I built the box and replaced factory JBL 8”. I left everything else stock and built the box to work with factory plastic panel, I know you have a 3rd gen, so slightly different rear seat setup but you get the point. Just adding the bass made a HUGE difference. I’m no longer in a rush to replace anything else stereo wise.

I agree 100%. Bass knob is key as it’s not easy to jump into EQ and increase/reduce the bass while driving. I didn’t have any blanks so I put mine right where your fingers hang on the arm rest.

I agree the bass knob is a must.

    As to the 2 10" or 1 12";
I have a twin 10 stealthbox I'm running 500 watts RMS thru from an Alpine PDX v9.

It sounds ok but a little underwhelming.
I'm thinking about having tech12volts make me a box for a 12" single JL audio sub to put under the seat of my DC..

I've got two 10tw3's in a ported box by tech12volt. Before that I had the JL Stealthbox.....these subs do much better in a ported enclosure.
They are being pushed by a hd900/5 that gives 500rms to the subs....it's pleeeeennnnty

    Not enough
The general consensus is two 10s hit harder (more cone area) and cleaner (faster response since they are smaller), a single 12 will play lower because they can generally hit lower frequencies, but that is considering they are the same sub and they are powered adequately. I was having the same dilemma last week. Since I listen to mostly rock, I went with two 10s. I ordered from Tech12volt. He originally suggested two JL10TW3s in a ported box, but those were out of my budget. I told him what I was looking to spend and he suggested two JL 10TW1s in a sealed box.

    How does it sound better?
Is it just just louder or does it have a clearer and more definition?

My twin 10 Stealthbox sounds ok after finally getting thing tuned it.
But it still seem to be lacking and just rumbles more than it punches.

What did you set your sub crossover to?

    Thanks..

Its hard to put it to words. To me, the stealthbox was a very tight and refined bass. It sounded nice and seemed to be designed to only add some low end to the music, not really thump when you've got it cranked. If i wanted to just add a little bit of depth to the music i probably could have just got away with a single 10. I want to be able to blast it with the windows down and have it thump. I have a 10w6 in a jl power wedge box in my commuter car and that thing sounds amazing and will really thump. Thats why i ended up going with the stealthbox at first. it just left me wanting more. I talked with tech12volt and was thinking about a hd750/1 to give the stealthbox more power, but he said not to and they sound better in a ported box.
The ported box just seems to be more efficient at delivering bass. I find i keep the bass knob on the fix86 lower than what i did before, but when i really crank it up....its almost violent.
I didn't mess much with the crossover settings. I was working with another member on here to figure out how to tune my amp and adjust the fix86 to make it sound the best. Here's my amp settings....what you think?

I would consider a pair of quality 8’s unless you want to beat the block.

I just ordered a pair of 8” Focal subs. With a solid enclosure and a quality JL 500 watt amp, they will do plenty.

Thanks for the input everyone! I've decided to roll with a 12TW3. I figure, with the money saved not getting the stealth box and dual 10's. I can get nice upgrades for all the door speakers.

Why not set the x-over frequency at 80Hz for the door speakers to match the x-over point of the sub at 80Hz? Won't this create a gap in midbass where the sub cuts out at 80Hz and the doors speakers don't pick it up until 150Hz-165Hz?

    Don't misunderstand...that was not a recommendation...that was a pure question.
