I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out if my newly replaced power steering pump is whining loudly or if it is just me. Can someone post up a video of their engine running at idle. Cold and warm. Should our power steering be 100% silent, or can you hear it run on our trucks? I don’t know since it whines bad since I bought it.

I cant say I really hear it, Ill pay more attention. Maybe hear it some at very low speed and really cranking the wheel, but it not enough for me to remember oh, thats loud. Other than the fan roaring at startup (toyota thing), it is what I would call quiet. Ive never heard any wine if that help. I will listen more closely on way home today and going out tomorrow.

I honestly spent ten minutes (I timed it) bleeding the system while engine off and then again while running. I did it several times with my phone recording so I could watch any air escaping. No more air coming from reservoir. I’m confident it’s been bled completely of air.

Just went over to 5-30 today, definitely an improvement with the valve train noise. Not silent, but much better.

You really want to hear a difference throw some Rotella T6 15w40 in there. I just did my summer switch over and the difference from Mobile 1 5w30 that had 5k on it and fresh rotella is amazing.

What fluid type did you use? Have you used a mechanics stethoscope to pinpoint the noise? I had bad alternator bearings that I swore was the PS pump.

    Problem solved.

so I removed the PS reservoir and cleaned the shit out of it with brake cleaner and compressed air. There must’ve been some sort of blockage to the suction port that wasn’t allowing it to get a full load (giggity). After I cleaned it out and filled it up, I bled it with the engine off and once it fired up it was silent. I’m using valvoline dex/merc blend. Same one I use in the trans. Can’t remember the exact title of by it.
Thanks for the help and tips all!

I had to do the same on mine. Funny how black sludge accumulated in the reservoir.
