Alright guys. I installed a new rear bumper. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to tap into to my cargo light correctly. I have tried several things but nothing works. I have read forums but to no avail. I have tried tapping into the pink wire on driver side rear door seal panel. I have tapped into the blue wire on left side of steering column but light stay in despite cargo light going off. Any suggestions?

I'm so gun shy around electrical that I'd be less than useless, tagging in @RainMan_PNW ! I don't know how big the differences in wiring are for the 2018 vs the 2020+ trucks with the new antennas and smart handles, etc. but I know that Casey has done bunches of electrical work in his truck.

I assume you have lights in your bumper that you want to work on the cargo light switch? Just to clarify the truck is a 2018 right?

Yep 2018 TRD SR5. Yes exactly. They work but won’t turn off when cargo light goes off when door is closed!

Which wire are you currently tapped into to power the lights in the bumper? Based on the Cargo Light Switch, Door Switch, the Body ECU powers or unpowers the relay connected to the cargo light. IF the relay is energized the Cargo Light will be lit, if not energized the cargo light should not be lit.

The pink wire is the one you want to be on. If the cargo light is ON it should have 12V, if its off pink wire will be 0V (No power).

FYI if you are on the blue wire you are on the wrong side of the "switch". The blue wire is connected directly to the battery via the Cargo fuse and will be hot at all times no matter what. Using this will cause your bumper lights to be on constantly.

Look under the drivers side dash in the body control module. (Same box the interior fuses are in).

On one side of the box you should see 4 connectors looking like these. The top one connector 3K on Pin #28 should be the pink wire. If you tap into this one for hot or power to your bumper lights and make sure they are grounded good it should be working correctly.

I am not sure if you can find this same pink wire in the drivers side rear door seal or not. But if you get the right pink wire the bumper lights should work the same as the cargo lights. My puddle lights in my mirrors are powered by this same wire. They light up when I unlock the truck, go off when I lock it or close the door the same as the Cargo light in the back.

Why do you want bumper lights with cargo light? Why not use for reverse light or idependant aux. lighting to minimize battery drain? I have a bunch of extra lights on my truck, but they are wired and used in ways that provide the most logical benefits. For example, my bed lights and cargo are on the same circuit, but bumper lights are on reverse circuit. If you want them on for working a few minutes loading something I think you could turn off engine, put key in on position, shift in reverse and have working/loading lights. Plus you would have extra reverse lights too. Just my .02.

Check the build link in my signature.
I’ve been offline this weekend. Looks like these guys got you hooked up.

The ONLY thing I can add is:
NEVER go off wire color, and NEVER do wiring modifications without consulting (and understanding how to read) the EWD for your specific year and your specific trim (the *1 and *2 on the screen capture that Jeff posted correspond to notes on that EWD about specific options or trim levels). Verify first by connector and pin, THEN by confirming function and signal with a multimeter. There are many “in-line” changes over the years, and differences between the harnesses for specific configurations, and some significant changes when the TSS system was introduced with the 2018 MY and again in 2020 with the smart key and new head unit wiring.

Yes in this scenario *1 was pre August 2017 production while *2 was August 2017 production and forward. Aka 2018 and newer trucks.

Great point to make here about notes and understanding diagrams purpose/function.

I would also strongly recommend testing with a multimeter to verify expected results before cutting or splicing into anything.

HI, I’m having such a hard time finding the correct wire to control my mirror spot lights off the cargo switch. Did the pink wire work? What a easy way to test the wire? I hope to back pin test that pink wire behind that power block in the second photo but I want to splice it in the door seal. And I see 2 pink wires there.

I get it... do your research, and I have. But come on, not everyone is an expert looking at these diagrams. I found the pin, I see how its routed but where, where does is show what color the wire is? What does that second pink wire control? how do I tap a wire and test it safely? these are my questions. I appreciate the obvious "insert google link" but I was simply asking someone who has had success with same outcome I am trying to achieve.

You misunderstood friend. I saw a lot of folks asking about wires and the thread I posted is sticky'd in a subforum called "electrical". Most folks don't know these subforums exist, and therefore don't realize we have wire diagrams in here.

    Electrical subforum - https://www.tundras.com/forums/electrical.130/

For your specific question I don't have the answer and wasn't trying to answer which is why I didn’t quote your post. I just wanted to share the wire diagrams resource.

    Cheers

Did a little more info. What year is your truck? You are adding lights in the mirror you want to run off the cargo light circuit?

It's a 21 Pro. My tow mirrors came with "spotlights" I would like to control with the cargo switch, and when the door is open, or unlocked. I have already ran both of the wires from the mirrors to the drivers side. Videos I've seen had them tapped into a brown wire behind the dash, but I don't have that. I'm not at home currently but if I remember correctly from last night there was two pink wires in the door seal wiring harness. From the research I've done its one of them. I just ordered some POSI taps so I can tap each one and test. Does this damage the wire when I remove the tap if it happens to be the wrong one? I'm fairly new to this. Thanks.

Look here. The smartest thing to do is go directly to the body control module. Guessing at which pink wire in the door seal is not what I would do. The Body Control Module is under the driver side dash, same as where the interior fuse box is (its part of the body control module) .

Look at the layout of several connectors, Identify the 3K connector and look for the pink wire in location #28. This is where I tapped in, about 6 inches out from the connector.

Sounds good. How would I test the wire without piercing it, or using a tap? The prongs on my multi meter are far too large to stick in that #28 socket.

I often use a paperclip. Slide it in the connector then put your meter to the paperclip. Check for 12v when door is open or cargo light on. Positive lead to paperclip, negative lead to ground

The Positaps are very good to work with and make only a small puncture in the wire insulation. If you test the wrong wire, just wrap in electrical tape or paint with silicone.

i am using search box to find cargo wired and saw this. been looking every forums. i don;t want to create a new one. i was hoping anyone can help me or point me where to find it. im not an expert with electric wired. i have 2020 pro and i cannot find cargo light where I can connected to tow mirrors. i don't want to use tow mirrors as reverse light when i backup only or using running light on all the time. I am using circuit tester to point which wired to find cargo light. i used circuit tester to point each wired and i got solid red light when i switch cargo door or on but when i switch off and i got a low red light so i tried to switch different wired and i got the same thing. i tested pink wired and i think it is pink wired? i don;t want to t-tap or Positaps wrong wired or blow up fuse. fuse box and i cannot find Cargo label.

You are looking in the wrong place.

This is the diagram. The location of the 3K connector is the back side of the black square box you show in your photos with the fuse box cover. Look around the black fuse box for the connector, it will be plugged in the back side along with several other ones.

The power signal comes out of connector 3K Pin #28 and goes to the cargo light assembly in the back of the cab. This is where I tied in my lights for my mirrors.

No the connecter you are looking for is physically plugged into that box. It is not next to it, it is a part of the box. Feel around up behind the black fuse box, you will notice alot of wiring plugged directly into it.

You can see here several locations for connections into the actual fuse box. The one you are looking for is one of these. Study all the connectors coming in and you can identify the 3K one.

These pictures are from a 2015 fuse box so it may not be exactly the same as yours.

oh! ok, i will try check it after work. which one you recommend to use t-tap or posi tap? from what i understand if you use t-tap or posi-tap can be removed and cover with black electric tap or leave it alone. it doesn;t hurt the wired? am i wrong?
