I was layed off from my job last Friday, 22 Jan, and filed for unemployment the next day. I figured I d head up to the local office the following Monday, and follow up on my claim. I soon found out all the offices are closed to walkins, and the number to call for claims is so busy that it won t go through, or they just disabled it. I don t know which. I was able to find a site that I can send a message, so I did, and at the end, it told me I may get an answer in a weeko_O

In NY you file you get a check.
I know two people that have been out of work for a year now.

Because of Covid they were getting 1000 a week. More than double what they were making.

Now they get 480 + 300 for the next 11 weeks and then it goes back to 480.

If due to Covid make sure you state that when you apply. In Texas the application process is done on the website. No need to call. Normally they hold back the first week but they quit doing that with Covid.

Yea. I read that about Oregon too. The waiting week was removed. Apparently the claim starts right away, but it can take a long time for the claim to start. No doubt the first check would include back pay, so It s just a matter of getting another job asap, or holding out until that check arrives.

I hate to hear it. But I’m glad to hear you’re skilled labor. I bet you find something worthwhile soon. I’m sure you’ll be surprised what opportunities you can find when you dig out of necessity.

My wife was in the same situation last March in PA, phone line and fax were both ringing busy, pretty much just keep redialing until it picks up. Even then it was June before she received any cash.

Went from having about $800 in the checking account one day to $5000 the next.

The week after it showed up she got a new job and is happier there than she ever was at the old one.

Make sure you have taxes withheld!!!
My wife was furloughed earlier in the year. Her employer was kind enough to do all the paperwork for all their employees they furloughed made it a breeze and we had no hiccups in getting paid.
Got her 1099-g the other day and no taxes were withheld. And of course estimated taxes need to be paid quarterly for this.
We did not do that as I presumed they would just file like the normal W4 they do for the normal paychecks.
So looks like we may be stuck with penalties and interest on top of the normal taxes.
Though in my reading we may luck out as I believe if one prepaid taxes by 100% the year before the fees and interest rate waived.
We got a small return last year so pretty sure that would classify as paying 100% the year before.
    But we’ll see.

+1 for double checking your tax withholdings! I think that with the "extra" money people are getting, the default is not to take withhold any taxes. There's going to be a lot of unhappy people come tax time.

Sorry to hear. I was laid off at the end of November. Can't get my EI claim to go through but it's obviously different in Canada.

Have an interview tomorrow but I'm not really sure I'm qualified for or that interested in the job other than I'm interested in not burning through all my savings while I wait for the economy to recover.

Seems like OR’s process and system has been a bit screwed up through all of this. I know of a few people last year that had a really hard time getting their claims going - one was over 12 weeks before she finally started getting payouts but I don’t recall all the details.

Hopefully yours gets handled quickly and, more importantly, you find something new soon. I thought I saw something recently that maybe Leupold was hiring machinists? Can’t remember for sure... also no idea if they’re union or not.

Glad to hear they had the sense to do that. I know a lot of folks around here who made bank during the first shut down and the extra $600 a week they got on unemployment, here in OK the max unemployment with the covid kicker would be $1200 a week, give or take a few $$. In some cases both husband and wife were bringing that in a week. $2400 a week, more than they both made before the shut down and most of them blew that faster than shit thru a goose. Insanity.

I also was not insinuating that your friends are idiots, if it came across like that I apologize.

I saw a lot of complaints about people making more on unemployment then when they were when working. One thing I never saw mentioned were the ones like myself (although maybe rare) that pulled in less then half of previous wages. This is just wages and does not include the extra $500/month for health insurance and other benefits such as disability insurance, life insurance, and 401K matching. Unemployment payments should have been capped based on wages earned plus health insurance but this would have been tough to implement. I believe the extra money people were receiving did help the economy recover.

I know some like that. Even with the extra $600 they still were short hundreds of dollars a week on what they use to bring home. Once that ran out they were struggling more than they wanted to be. Stressful for sure.

The lines are busy because everyone is trying to call. You’d have to call right at 8am or when ever they open the lines up. If you filed online just keep filing the weekly on Sundays. They will eventually process it and you’ll get back paid as long as you’ve filed every week.
