Hi, I read in a recent thread someone making a generalized comment that the twin V6 engine that the 3rd gen Tundras are using are more susceptible to debris. Apologies if there is a duplicate thread somewhere on this.

Does anyone have real data to back this claim up when comparing to the V8 in 2.5 gen Tundras for example?

Has anyone considered this and taken any steps to mitigate risk of debris getting into your 3rd gen Tundra's engine?

What about other automakers with twin V6, do they have any reported issues because of debris getting into the engine?

It does stand to reason that a powerplant with a more complicated air induction system would have more possible failure points that might allow debris to be ingested. I also own a 2017 Fiat 124 Abarth and it get regular inspections to assure the air intake is in good condition. The thought of the turbo grinding up something scares me.

    Too many, but not enough....
As long as you have quality air filters that are changed when needed there shouldnt be much to worry about. Of course, with double throttle bodies, you would have 2 to clean rather than 1 when the time comes.

I mean, no, debris is not more likely to get into the engine. Your air filters should prevent that from happening so assuming your filters are the same and filter just as well, the risk is equal. Additionally, any part of the intake after the turbos is going to be under positive pressure some significant portion of the time, so that portion of the intake will actually be pushing air out as opposed to pulling it in if there were to be a leak

However, if debris were somehow to get past the filters, the turbo compressors could be damaged from debris, but at the same time, the intercooler will almost act like a filter for larger debris and hopefully prevent it from making it into the cylinders. So its a tradeoff. Damage some compressors, or mess up a piston or valve?

Despite the common misconception, turbos don't make the engine "suck" any harder than a non-turbo engine. If you have two engines making 350 hp, one turbo'd and one not, they both will be drawing in ~35 lbs/min of air. From the air filters perspective, the air flow and "suck" is the same.

Definitely ripped off if you don't have another V6 under your center console making all that extra wind noise. Must have been missed in a QC pass.

I better start a complaint thread about my missing V6. Anybody else only have a single V6 in their 3rd Gen?!

Its supposed to be like a Lightning where one V6 powers each axle. You're really missing out.
