I was reading the Tundra review by Driving.ca https://driving.ca/reviews/first-drive/first-drive-2022-toyota-tundra
and the editor writes "It’s also worth noting that on the base SR trim only, Toyota artificially restricts the horsepower and torque to 348 and 405, respectively, via software changes.".

I wonder for those that purchased the SR could swap out their ECU (or do a reflash) and gain that extra 41 HP and 74 lb-ft of torque?

Seems silly that toyota would deliberately limit the power on the base truck when it was designed to put out max power. Its the equivalent of buying a Tundra with a modernized 4.6 motor! Would reliability be increased due to more conservative tuning? Would fuel economy be improved?

I've read that some of the newer Toyota ECUs have security on them which might make flashing/tuning impossible

Why would they do that in the first place?

The folks at driving.ca are generally considered respectable journalists in Canada. They can be wrong, but they wouldn’t have added this point unless they had reason to.

Yes but at what cost. So DC is out because cab is too small now and SR is out because its programmed for a kid. Dammit toyota.

I've read someone else about 3 power outputs so I believe it.

With the smaller cab on both versions especially no longer a crew max and lack of a 6th seater are big deals for me. Then no hybrid on sr/sr5 although now it looks like the power may not be worth it. And slower 0-60 times on both I'm losing my excitement for this gen. And I've always liked the looks better than other gems.

If these were normal times I'd be trying to find a deep discount on a 21 then long arm/supercharge, but I can't see paying msrp for a 21 sr5.

Not to mention they also built a truck that you can’t do any serious off-roading in without extensive modifications. And as an added bonus they made it the ugliest 1/2 ton truck on the market. This is neither debatable nor subjective, the truck is fugly. I just don’t see anything world beating or game changing about this truck.

The whole idea of limiting power for a truck actually designed as a work truck is just crazy on every level and makes little sense that I can imagine?

And if past experience with my comprehending what Toyota is thinking is any indicator then that makes it all likely to be true too!

For me toyota has officially phased out the SR and DC.

Base model is now the SR5 CC and I can no longer get into a full size Toyota 4x4 truck for under $45k USD MSRP before tax tag title.

That's because this turd gen was made for glamping. Not work. They already admitted as much.

This is an ugly instagram truck.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Add some fuel to the fire here, but the Lexus LX600 V35A-FTS gets the full 409hp @ 5200RPM.

Guess what guys? It’s a computer controlled internally waste gated turbo, on a computer controlled engine than can adjust timing, cams, and both port fuel injection as well as direct injection events to produce a wide range of results.

Toyota is able to get multiple power ratings out of the same hardware with not one single hard component change. They’re probably leaving at least 75-90hp and 100lb-ft of torque unrealized (maybe more) from the 409hp LX600/LC300 tune with the turbos currently being used. The stock short block and rotating assembly are probably capable of handling way way more power, but the small turbos made to give good low end response are the limiting factor. Toyota is obviously going to be super conservative with boost maps and timing because they know their tight ass customers will want to tow max loads up mountains on a hot day with 87 octane cat piss in the fuel tank. So they’re understandably holding way way back from giving us even close to what the engine can do with the stock turbos and associated hardware.

While we’re on the subject of intentional governing of output, don’t be shocked if there is programming in place to limit torque production in low gears so the multiplication of that torque doesn’t end up fragging U joints, or damaging the diffs.

Once tuning support is available these engines regardless of the original tune, are going to be capable of making a lot more power for those who don’t care about the warranty on the powertrain.

Maybe but none of this speaks at all to why they would limit power for those wanting a less expensive truck, this is just rude if true.

Well it’s rude that Toyota de-rated the Tundra down from 409hp to 389hp.

They want Lexus customers to think they’re getting a special version of the same engine. So they gave Toyota buyers the monkey market tune.

You better like it you peasants!

They will then use the stats on sales of said dc and Sr to justify not offering them anymore. "Well sales don't support keeping the Sr or dc as most people don't seem to want these options"

It's probably a reliability thing. Fleet trucks detuned for high miles. The gas engines in other heavy duty platforms are almost always detuned.

That would be a more compelling argument if Toyota engaged in fleet sales in a meaningful way. Sales history to this point suggests that Toyota doesn’t care about fleet sales, and if they did they’d be making a 3/4 ton or 1 ton for those purposes for vocational light duty trucks.

I am venturing a guess that the only reason the SR trim exists is to act as a loss leader on dealer lots to get people to show up due to a mythical sub $30,000 price tag. Toyota will build very very few of these trucks, and very few will actually want to buy one. They’ll then get to have enough de-tuned V35A-FTS trucks running around to further validate the engine, and maybe market it at that power level for the next Tacoma and 4Runner if it will fit. Think economy of scale.

They already lost me as a new truck buyer when they killed the Regular Cab truck and luckily I guess that makes it an easy choice for me,this just helps make it easier.

They are literally suggesting we get less truck to save money and sadly the detuned for reliability thinking does not really argue for terrific new engine quality to this buyer anyway either?
The dropping of features and chrome to save money is one thing and I have no trouble accepting that but getting the same drivetrain electronically crippled is another no go for me.

It makes sense to have a fleet tune, it doesnt make any sense to make it mandatory to the entire trim.

That’s a dick move, so the SR5 is the new SR. They just raise the price of every trim without raising the price

What are the driveline parts differences on all these different tunes on the 2022?

SR iForce: Low power tune. Smaller iForce diffs.

Non-SR IForce. Regular tune. Smaller iForce diffs.

iForce Max. Power tune. HD diffs.

Anything else? I think they did this with the 4.6/5.7 but I dont remember all the part differences?

We just paying more for computer codes at this point.
