Fish in general is just nasty. Also anything raw, hell I can't even do a medium steak, has to be well done. Some may say I'm crazy and ruin my food by cooking it too much but I guarantee I will never get sick from it or get a parasite.
Besides the whole food safety thing, I just prefer well cooked meats.

    Understandable perspective to be sure.

I am in no way trying to convert or encourage you to try anything you don't want to. Just conversing. I enjoy discussions with people who have different views, so long as they are rational. US sushi is more of a risk that it is in Japan, for sure. Their cleaning practices and food safety are very good. Thus the raw chicken being consumed there. I think I am with you on that one though. Raw chicken is just so ingrained in me as terrible, I don't know that I could do it.

This conversation pushed me to do a little research, and it's honestly a little reassuring. Here's the link if you'd like, but below that was the parts that were reassuring to me. https://www.verywellhealth.com/anisakis-raw-fish-parasite-1958783

Human infection is a dead end in the parasite’s life cycle. The worms are usually eliminated expelled from the intestines within 3 weeks of infection.

    Treatment and Prevention
Treatment is surgical or endoscopic removal of the parasites.

The FDA has provided several guidelines for retailers who sell fish intended to be eaten raw. These guidelines include freezing the fish to -31°F for 15 hours or -4°F for 7 days to kill parasites and physical examination known as “candling” for the presence of worms

Further research brought me to this article that has been medically reviewed by an MD.

    https://www.verywellhealth.com/diseases-associated-with-eating-sushi-1958814

From what I can find, sushi isn't any more of a risk than other meats if proper food handling is exercised. That won't help you @Azblue with the aversion to fish, and raw in general, but for those who enjoy sushi it can give piece of mind.

Thank you, Azblue, for prodding my brain into digging up some info. Learned stuff today. :woot:

Always a good thing to learn something new.

Fish still tastes like shit though. Funny thing is that I love fishing. It is so relaxing, I just throw anything I catch back.

Also, it's really the pork brain worms that you've got to worry about. :eek2:

I don't like cooked fish, and also throw my catches back.

Like she said "If the worms are moving, the fish is fresh!"

If you cook it they aren't an issue, and if you freeze if before eating it raw it's the same scenario. Just extra protein!

I can totally understand that. 100% honesty; I'm more concerned that somebody preparing the food didn't wash their hands and I'm going to get hepatitis or something.

With my luck, I'd get the worms with a side order of hepatitis, and have to pick up the tab at the Sushi Bar. ;)

You guys are cracking me up!

I’m now laid out in the floor recovering from Thanksgiving level pain. I even had to pass on dessert. But the pies will taste great for breakfast tomorrow!

With @Green Thunder and @T-Rex266 posting up their Japanese dinners all the time, it might be appropriate to rename this thread. "Sushi Lovin' Tundras" perhaps? :monocle:

I'm not THAT adventurous with food. Some things I just won't eat. Brains, heart, liver, any internal organs for the most part. And then there's that spit drink that some tribes do.... gross! :puke:

Yeah, that's the one thing that would be hard in Japan. They aren't huge on the "Be kind to animals/food" thing. No judgement, but it would be some culture shock.
