She's a particular and deliberate kind of person, and not really great on surprises except for things like flowers or a dinner out, and even with the dinner she'll need a couple hours' notice. But to your point, yes, I should definitely schedule a test drive and take her.

DUDE! I just did some digging on that Outback Wilderness, and HOLY SHIT! 100% if I didn't need my truck to tow stuff I would be super tempted to look harder! It's got a damn lift and a turbo!:eek2:

Hope everyone enjoyed their extra hour of sleep.

I missed out. Couldn't sleep, so I got comfy and started watching youtube shorts and such on my phone. Figured I'd get tired after a few hours. Finally got tired... at 4 AM. :annoyed:

Bought a for pack of red bull and a bunch of sugar to get me through the day.

Me too, man. Me too. I mean, yeah, I've had sleep issues for a bit over a decade anyway, but the last month and a half has been something else.

Nice. Happy for him and that he can afford it! I hope he can, and he isn't burying himself in debt buying stuff to try and fill a hole for something else that is missing in his life.

Slept like crap. The extra hour was just another sixty minutes of trying to calm my mind.

I honestly need to sleep in once a week to reset some kind of mental clock. Even making it to 8am is enough to clear my head. I’m going on two weeks now of poor sleep and I’m getting cranky.

That sucks. On the bright side, in my experience, you'll adapt and be better able to handle it if it's a consistent issues. Part of being a member of the amazing human species. Adaptability. Doesn't help with the problem at all, but it makes the problem less problematic if it persists.

So, this is a bit of a tome, but I mean it with the best of intentions. As an aside I should say 'I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV', and also, you grown adults probably know this stuff already, but sometimes it helps to have someone write it down.

For folks with 3-shift variable schedules, other than trying the things that steady-schedule folks could do and hope for the best, it's just going to be tough. But for folks with steady schedules - -

Curb the chemicals. Get some exercise.

Everyone's reaction to caffeine and sugar is different. The 'sugar crash' doesn't happen at all for me, no matter how much I stuff in the pie hole. It doesn't keep me up; and since I don't get a crash, it doesn't make me drowsy either. My son is totally opposite. If he eats more than a couple of grams at a time, he's got about 2 hours before he's fighting a nap. I can have a morning cup of coffee, with any amount of caffeine, and be fine. But three p.m. comes (I am a chocoholic, so this is horrible) any amount of caffeine will cost me some sleep. My wife can have all she wants, whenever she wants, and it does nothing. All of that by way of saying that nobody but you can gauge how much and when of what molecules give you trouble, but once you find out you can do something with the info.

If you're not regularly getting exercise by going to the gym or having a physical job, even walking a single mile can help get your body functions regulated. Not just sleep, either, but your kidneys and colon will love you for it. Two miles is better - much more than twice as good for your body than one mile - and will cost you 40 minutes a day. For me it's not sleep so much, it's my guts... And I don't need to go much faster than a 20-minute pace to make me feel better. No jogging, no gym membership; just me and a sidewalk.

Alcohol. I love it too, and I refuse to leave it off the menu, but you know the drill here.

Melatonin. Rethink this shit. It's not really good to fv(k with hormones. Screen time, too, and you know it. I run a technical sales team for Microsoft Cloud products - I'm on the damned computer more than 15 hours a day, and then I'm on the TV for at least a couple of hours every night. Other than alcohol, this is my worst sleep depriver. Paperback books and silence are your friends.

I hope you guys can get back in shape sleep-wise. It's more than a drag on your mood.

    Best.

I appreciate the fact that you have enough concern for strangers on the internet to try and help. Thank you for caring. :fistbump:

I am halfway between on the schedule bit. 12 hour shifts in a 7 on 7 off days/graves rotation. It's the best schedule I've ever had for a 24/7 position for 2 reasons.
    1. It only takes 4 people to cover a position, so long as there aren't any disruptions from illness/vacation/laziness. It lets you get a lot covered with a skeleton crew.
    2. With 7 days off between the day/grave swap it is usually not a major issue to change the sleep schedule. Beats the hell out of trying to do it over a weekend.

My brain is just an asshole and won't shut off some times. Various things can cause this, and I usually know what it is. When the cause can be rectified in an expeditious manner, I can get things back to normal. When it's a complex problem/beyond my control/something that is just going to take time, well, that's how I learned that you can adapt to shit sleep.

I'm working to eliminate sugar, but caffeine has never bothered my sleep. Coffee used to be my go to cure for the insomnia. I'd go hit a truck stop and have 2-6 cups of coffee and it had a calming effect that would mellow out my anxiety to where I could sleep. Now there isn't anywhere open that does coffee in the middle of the night, and I gave coffee up anyway.

    Exercise?

Alcohol is one vice I have been able to avoid. I despise it, and what it does. That, and I'm terrified of it. Pretty sure if I ever start drinking I will just fall into a bottle and never come out.

Every sleep aid I've tried, including melatonin, gives me a headache and I don't get any rest from the sleep. I'd rather just be tired than be tired and feel like shit.

You know what they say: "You can sleep when you're dead." :burp:

    @Hightide Lol!
Great advice Steven! From everything I've learned as an insomniac myself you are spot on.
I try to help people with sleep issues almost daily. Peddling drugs inside of a healthcare system with healthcare workers as my primary patient base, it's a common theme. Especially recently. (No ban-hammer pls)
There are lots of pharmaceutical options out there, but none of them will have the payoff of lifestyle modification. Plus they all have crappy side effects. A naked old man found driving a stolen car, shoplifting cheetos at 3am? Ambien.
For some folks it's getting the mind to turn off at the end of the day, independent of chemicals. For others, like you mentioned It's the chemicals we use to cope be it caffeine in the am or alcohol in the pm. Lifestyle changes are usually the most effective treatment, but are met with the most resistance.
All of that being said, I was lurking this thread at 2am this morning looking for some activity as I lay awake. So ya :anonymous:
