While waiting impatiently on the release of the 2020 Tundra, I started to take a look at the all new Silverado. The LT trail boss, in my opinion is a great looking truck. I am going to test drive this weekend. Being redisgned in 2019 vs a dated 2007 design, does have its appeal.

Anyone have any experience or hear anything negative about the all new Silverado? Seriously considering as a contender.

    Nope. I wouldn’t, and I own a GM truck.

Yeah, have an Acadia and this fact gives me reservations, but was not sure about the Silverado.

Oh I’m not in one bit unhappy with my 3500, but I wouldn’t purchase a 1500 with cylinder shutdown.

Change the front end and it looks like a tundra to me. I say no. My brother has a Denali Sierra and paid 56k for it and it has problems. Stick to toyota.

Check out Dashboard Light. They’re giving the 2015-2019 Silverados an “Exceptional” rating. For those unfamiliar, DL measures longer- term reliability of vehicles sorted by make or class. It used to be called the Long Term Quality Index.

Maybe that truck wouldn’t be the problem-ridden money pit for you that we all would expect?

Toyota makes things in Mexico and other parts overseas as well, its the way of the world. Even though the Tundra is made in USA all its components are not, a good majority yes but not 100%

That said I'm with Colorado Tj and I wouldn't own a cylinder deactivation truck either.

See if this transmission "kicks" like the previous model. That's why I traded for tundra. Every time I came to a stop and went to press the gas the transmission would kick the shit out of the truck. The only GM truck I would buy is a HD diesel

I never said that, but final assembly of Chevrolet trucks is in Mexico. In my opinion, it doesn't have to be. If Toyota can build a new plant from bare land, then build a similar truck with US labor and materials, and sell it cheaper than a similar GM vehicle, then the problem is not place of assembly...the problem is management and efficiency. I will not reward GM for mismanagement, inefficiency, and unreliability.

Place of component manufacture is even more important than final assembly, and the difference in component quality is in Toyota quality control. The Tundra has 75% US made content, and the Silverado 62%. It's good for the US economy to claw back some of the manufacturing that had slipped away. I was a GM guy until I bought a 86 4Runner, which was virtually 100 percent Japanese content. Since then, I have owned Toyotas that were made in the US using US components, and I have seen reliability decline by using US made components. Consequently, I read stories here that never would have happened with my old 4Runner, but not as many incidents as with GM trucks. They are better, but still not up to Toyota reliabilty.

It is a global economy, it is what it is, but I can help by buying an "import". GM needs to get their ship squared away, or they will be history in ten years. They have already lost historical customer loyalty that ain't ever coming back.

With all of the other great reasons listed above not to buy the new Silverado, just remember that it's a totally new truck and with that comes all of the yet-unknown problems that will arise.

There's that. Nothing like having a proven product. Tundra shoppers may experience that new-truck concern...some day. :D

Possibly that's true now. If that's what the window sticker says, that's where it was made. I haven't shopped Chevy trucks since early 2017. I noted then that they change their half-ton production plants, and probably the guys bolting them together, like underwear. Highly effective for...continuity of product quality?

At the time, I was happy to read a window sticker on a Silverado LT with a US manufacturing location, but determined that truck was for a previous production year (2016?). If I'm not mistaken, half-ton production had moved to Mexico the next model year (2017). It caused me a little unease, but I was still willing to buy one. That is, until I began talking to their idiot salesman...he intended to make his weekly income off my sale. I certainly don't look like I was born yesterday.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I was not ware of the cylinder deactivation - can this be disabled on the 2019? I am at least going to test drive the Silverado LT Trail Boss this weekend, but I was reading that someone suspected that they disabled DFM on the dealer lots and then re-enabled after purchase. I know that is a pretty big conspiracy theory, but the reason I asked if it can be disabled - as I certainly do not want any type of cylinder reduction, fuel savings be damned. I despise chrome and was looking at the Tundra Limited and had reservations due to this fact, but with the new colors in the 2020 Tundra Pro becoming available (do not like black, white or voodoo blue) such as magnet grey metallic, it has left the Tundra in the forefront of my thoughts.

The Trail boss isn't a bad looking truck but its a GM. If it's not a Yota truck it better be a Raptor..

I test drove a Custom Trail Boss and was not impressed with interior at all. Toyota interior is better than it. LT has improved interior but the dash setup still seems even dated compared to Ford/Ram. Also, for a truck with a standard two inch lift the tires included are too small. The truck did handle well and the 5.3 engine ran smooth and quiet. Nothing to lose with a test drive.

Good info. Chevy has upped their game. I gave them another chance in 2006 and 2008, and those were good vehicles; one was totally trouble-free (very low mileage), the other had some major issues but they occurred in the warranty period. Maybe they're finally adjusting to the idea that the customer does have better options available now, and their game HAS to be improved.

Note the specific segment awards: Chevrolet Silverado HD (@ColoradoTJ ) and Toyota Tundra. Don't see half-ton Silverado mentioned.

Last Chevy the wife had was a pile of crap. $60k Tahoe at 100k miles had lost 6 motor mounts, a fuel pump, two AC relays, the GPS/Head unit, an alternator, and miscellaneous suspension parts. Absolute horror to own. Oh forgot the dash was peeling and the mirror motor that allows it to fold was stripped out.. Oh and I ripped two plastic chrome finished door handles off just by opening it.

Yes, true, but does their result match your own personal experience? (The data point reference.) In my case, after owning both brands, I have to say my own observations on my vehicles agree with theirs. I've seen a few Tundra owners here who have had problems that would call bs and are ready to buy a Chevy, Ford, or Dodge. ;)

So who would you recommend? If you don't have a better alternative and why they're a better alternative, then we gotta go with what's available.

I test drove a Silverado before I got this 19 Tundra. It's cheap, drives like a boat, and reminds me of a rental car. Just really really cheap feeling all around.

    Projected Reliability= below average.

    Don’t believe their fake hype.

If you are looking at a Trail Boss you might wait until the 2020 models drop as you will be able to get the 6.2 in it this net model year. I had a new AT4 for a weekend this year before I bought my latest Tundra and liked most everything about it....and to be honest it beats the Tundra in most every category there is IMO, except reliability and resale. But it was a first year and I didn't like that and the dealers weren't dealing on them yet as they were to new so Tundra it was. Enjoy your test drive.
